There’s no denying that a road trip can be one of the most memorable adventures you can enjoy during summer. Road trips are a fantastic way to see the United States while making life-long bonds with your family and friends. Before you hit the road, though, it pays to take the time and effort to pack your car correctly. Packing correctly will add to your fun and, more importantly, reduce everyone’s stress level.

To help you pack your car for maximum fun, NSA Storage put together this handy guide! Read on to pack like a pro for your next road trip and enjoy it to the fullest!

Why Packing Your Car Right is Important

Not convinced that packing your vehicle correctly is important? Well ,if you’re travelling a long distance with several people, and especially if you’re traveling with kids, you’ll want to stay organized so that things like electronics and snacks are easy to find during the trip. That way, everyone stays happy and entertained. It also minimizing the chances of forgetting something at home if you pay close attention to what you’re packing and where. Plus, you’ll be able to maximize the space in your vehicle and bring everything you might need for vacation fun!

How to Pack Your Car: Step-by-Step Guide

1. Make a Packing Plan

A woman in a hat and coat packing her SUV's trunk with bags while her dogs waits in the vehicle.

As with most activities, making a plan before you start is an excellent idea. When packing your car for a summer road trip be sure to:

  • Make a checklist of everything you’ll need. (See below!)
  • Separate daily use items from things you won’t need until you arrive at your final destination.
  • Group your things into categories like snacks, toys, electronics, clothes, etc.
  • Re-check your checklist before leaving!

2. Skip the Suitcases

Suitcases are great when you’re traveling by plane, boat, or bus. For a road trip by car, however, they can be bulky and often don’t always fit well into your vehicle. Instead, use:

  • Duffel bags for clothes. You can often squeeze these into tight spaces.
  • Soft-sided coolers rather than hard-sided. Like duffel bags, you can squeeze these into tighter spaces more easily.
  • Clear plastic bins for things like first aid, snacks and small toys.
  • An over-the-seat organizer for items you use the most

Unlike most suitcases, the containers above can be squashed or smooshed into place and help you maximize your space!

3. Load the Heaviest Items First

If you do take large suitcases or a large cooler filled with food, be sure to load them into your vehicle first. They should be towards the bottom and center of your car, to keep it more stable while driving. Also;

  • Don’t place heavy items on top of lighter, more fragile items.
  • Try to keep your car balanced on both sides.
  • Never block windows or mirrors with anything.

4. Make Essential Items Easier to Grab

Having to dig through a bag or bin to find something can be stressful, especially for smaller kids. Instead, keep the following items towards the top or somewhere more accessible, including:

  • Phone chargers
  • Baby wipes or paper towels
  • Water bottles
  • Snacks
  • A first aid kit
  • Travel games

5. Use All Your Car’s Space

Packing your car for maximum fun on your road trip means maximizing all of your vehicle’s space. Here are a few examples of efficient car packing:

  • Use the footwells below seats for snacks, activity bags, shoes, etc.
  • Fill empty spaces wherever possible with soft items like jackets, pillows, and blankets.
  • As mentioned earlier, use over-the-seat organizers
  • If necessary, purchase a cargo box to attach to your car’s roof. These are great for things you’ll need when you arrive at your destination.

6. Involve the Entire Family

A young girl leaning out of an open SUV window, waving happily, while her mother smiles up at her from inside the vehicle.

Since it’s summer, the kids will be on vacation, so be sure to get them involved in packing your car. One excellent way to do this is to give each child their own backpack and have them fill it with:

  • Their favorite stuffed animal or toy
  • A pillow
  • Headphones
  • Coloring books
  • Travel games
  • Their favorite snacks

7. Pack Your Car for Safety

Just like any other car ride, safety should come first when packing for your road trip. Below are a few tips to help you and your family stay safe on the road:

  • Don’t stack anything above the back seat. This will keep the driver’s view clear.
  • Secure anything loose with bungee cords or cargo nets.
  • Keep emergency items in easy to reach places including a flashlight, first aid kit, jumper cables, etc.
  • Don’t bury safety gear under other stuff.

8. Have Fun Packing!

Let’s be honest; packing a car isn’t exactly the most fun activity. However, if you get the family involved it can be a little more fun (or at least less boring). Here’s how:

  • Create a “packing playlist” of your favorite music
  • Have a race to see who can pack their bag the fastest.
  • Depending on the bags you use, let your children decorate them using magic markers, stickers, or crayons.
  • Give each of your children their own, designated space in the car to use.

Road Trip Checklist

As promised, here’s a comprehensive checklist to use when packing your car:

  • Chargers for all of your devices
  • Snack and drinks
  • A first aid kit
  • Any necessary medication
  • Blankets and pillows
  • Bug spray
  • Sunblock
  • A roadside emergency kit
  • Trash bags
  • Toys and games
  • Entertainment devices like tablets
  • Summer shoes and clothing for your final destination

Rich in history and culture, Kentucky is a state with breathtaking natural beauty. It’s also one of the best places in the United States for fans of horse racing, outdoor adventures, and bourbon. In other words, Kentucky is a beautiful place to visit, with many excellent amenities and attractions. That includes many major Kentucky cities, including Louisville, Lexington, and Fort Knox, to name just three.

If you’re planning to visit the Bluegrass State in 2025, any of the seven cities below is a great place to start. It’s all brought to you by SecurCare Storage, the Kentucky self storage specialists. To figure out which Kentucky cities you should visit this year, read on!

1. Louisville

Not only is Louisville, Kentucky, the largest city in the state, it’s home to some of It’s best attractions. That includes, for example, The Muhammad Ali Center, which is dedicated to the legendary boxer and activist.

There are several of the best top bourbon distilleries in Louisville, also. The Urban Bourbon Trail is the best way to discover more about them and the adult beverages they create.

Then there’s the world famous Kentucky Derby, held at Churchill Downs every May. This fast and furious horse race is the pride and joy of Kentucky! Lastly, there’s the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory. If you’re a fan of baseball, this is a must see attraction in Louisville!

2. Fort Knox

Most people don’t realize that Fort Knox is not just a fort but an actual city in Kentucky. Known for its rich military history, Fort Knox also has several important US landmarks. They include the United States Bullion Depository, which holds a major portion of the gold reserves in the United States.

There’s also the George Patton Museum, where you can learn all about this cantankerous but brilliant U.S. military leader. If you’re more of an outdoor adventure fan, Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area is a great spot. There you’ll find camping, fishing, hiking and more to enjoy with your family.

3. Bowling Green

One of the coolest things about Bowling Green is that it’s the home of the National Corvette Museum. For America’s favorite sports car, that’s quite an honor!

The inside of Mammoth Caves, lit by a single lantern.

Bowling Green also boasts the world’s longest cave system. That would be Mammoth Cave National Park, which provides guided tours throughout the year for visitors. If seeing what goes on underneath your feet sounds neat, beat a path to this fantastic park.

There’s also Lost River Cave, which gives underground boat tours and has scenic trails to explore. In other words, while you might not have heard of Bowling Green, Kentucky, it certainly has a lot to offer!

4. Lexington

We’ve talked about how Louisville, Kentucky, holds the world famous Kentucky Derby every year. Some of the horses that race there come from Lexington, where Kentucky Horse Park is located. This is a working horse farm as well as a museum that’s dedicated to the history of our equine friends.

Lexington is also home of the distillery district, which is a hub for lovers of adult beverages, specifically bourbon. You’ll find several distilleries in Lexington as well as restaurants dedicated to serving the best bourbons, with fantastic entertainment options.

While you’re there, don’t forget to visit Keeneland Racecourse, one of the most beautiful race tracks in the United States! This is where many of the most famous Kentucky Derby-winning horses have been bred and trained.

5. Bardstown

Along with Lexington, Bardstown, Kentucky, is also known for its amazing bourbon. There are several world famous distilleries in Bardstown, including Jim Beam and Maker’s Mark!

You’ll also find My Old Kentucky Home State Park, where you can learn all about Kentucky’s musical Heritage. We highly recommend taking a tour of the historic mansion. While you’re there, be sure to take a day trip to beautiful downtown Bardstown. In fact, if you Google “small town charm”, you’ll probably see a picture of Downtown Bardstown.

6. Frankfort

Aerial shot of Frankfort, Kentucky.

What’s ironic about Frankfurt is that it’s Kentucky’s capital and rich in history, but almost unknown outside of the state. Be sure to visit, however, as there are several amenities and attractions worth seeing.

That includes the Kentucky State Capitol, one of the most stunningly beautiful state capitols in the country. For history buffs, Daniel Boone’s grave is located in Frankfurt. If you’ve always wondered, you can visit the final resting place of this famous American frontiersmen. Last but certainly not least is the Buffalo Trace Distillery, one of the oldest distilleries in the United States!

7. Pikeville

One of the hidden gems of the Appalachian region, Pikeville is known for its stunning landscapes. It’s also known for several cultural attractions and a rich history. That includes the feud between the Hatfields and McCoys, which has gained legendary status in the United States.

While you’re there, we definitely recommend visiting Breaks Interstate Park. Known as the “Grand Canyon of the South”, the hiking trails and views here are, in a word, breathtaking! You’ll also find several other recreational activities available here to enjoy with your family.

Interested in seeing one of the largest earth moving projects in the western hemisphere?! If yes, the Pikeville Cut-Through Project should be on your destination list. It was an absolutely massive earthmoving project, designed to prevent flooding and improve the infrastructure of the city.

California, the Golden State, is known for its beautiful beaches, warm weather, and awe-inspiring cities. If you’re thinking about moving to California in 2024, you may wonder which city will be the best fit for you and your family. The fact is every California city has its own vibe, attractions, and advantages.

Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly environment, a great job market, or an adventure-filled lifestyle, this article will help you decide which California city to move to. It’s all brought to you by iStorage, the storage specialists! Read on to discover your new home city in California!

Irvine, California is a Top-Rated California City

Irvine, California is often considered one of the best cities to move to in California. Located in Orange County, Irvine is known for its clean streets, great schools, and low crime rate. This city has been carefully planned, making it a fantastic place for families or anyone looking for a peaceful environment to live and work.

  • Family-Friendly: Irvine has several top-rated public schools, parks, and family-friendly activities. For example, there’s the Irvine Spectrum Center, a shopping center with plenty of dining and entertainment options.
  • Outdoor Activities: If you truly love the outdoors, Irvine offers several fantastic hiking trails, biking paths, and parks. Crystal Cove State Park is perfect for hiking or spending the day at the beach and is only a short drive from the center of town.
  • Challenges: The cost of living in Irvine, like many California cities, can be high, especially housing. Renting can also be an expensive proposition. You should also note that the city is known for being quieter than most, which may not appeal to you if you’re looking for vibrant nightlife.

Santa Rosa, California Offers a Laid-Back Vibe

Santa Rosa offers a distinctive, laid-back lifestyle that’s perfect if you want to escape busy city life without sacrificing access to outdoor activities and natural beauty. The people here are outgoing, easygoing, and welcoming, and volunteerism is high.

  • Quiet Living: Santa Rosa is quieter than many other California cities, making it ideal for retirees or those folks who want a relaxed lifestyle. The city offers a genuinely slower pace of life.
  • Nature and Recreation: This part of the Golden State is home to breathtaking beaches and nature reserves, making it perfect for nature lovers. Hiking, camping, and fishing are some of the most popular outdoor activities in Santa Rosa.
  • Community Feel: Santa Rosa has a strong sense of community. As mentioned earlier, people are friendly, and there are a slew of community events to attend and enjoy, from farmers markets to local art shows and more.
  • Challenges: Santa Rosa offers a peaceful lifestyle, no doubt, but it can feel quite isolated compared to some of the larger California cities. If you’re looking for a variety of job opportunities or easy access to big city amenities, this may not be your best choice. The job market is more limited, and public transportation options are sparse, making a car imperative.

The Suburbanite and Surfer’s Dream: Carlsbad, California

Located in San Diego County, Carlsbad offers a mix of suburban life and access to some of the best beaches on the west coast. That makes Carlsbad a perfect fit for families, professionals, surfers, and anyone who loves the coastal life.

  • Family-Friendly: Families love Carlsbad for its excellent schools, safe neighborhoods, and major attractions like LEGOLAND California Resort.
  • Job Market: The job market is strong in Carlsbad, especially for those in the technology, life sciences, and healthcare industries. Companies like Viasat and Thermo Fisher Scientific have a large presence here.
  • Outdoor Fun: A coastal city, Carlsbad offers easy access to surfing, paddleboarding, beach volleyball, sunbathing, and many other popular activities. There are also many gorgeous and scenic hiking and biking trails to enjoy!
  • Challenges: Like many coastal cities in California, the cost of living in Carlsbad is relatively high, especially as you get closer to the beach. The city’s laid-back atmosphere may not suit those seeking a faster-paced lifestyle, and the high amount of tourism can lead to busy beaches and traffic, especially during the summer months.

San Francisco, California is Still a Treat

San Francisco is one of the most iconic cities in California. Known for the Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, and rich history, San Francisco offers a unique experience for anyone looking to move to a big city. It’s one of the best cities to move to if you’re seeking excitement, diversity, and life-changing career opportunities.

  • Job Market: San Francisco has one of the most dynamic job markets in the world, especially in technology and finance. Companies like Google, Facebook, and Salesforce have major offices in the area.
  • Cultural Diversity: San Francisco is known for its cultural diversity and its art scene. You’ll find galleries, theaters, and music venues on almost every corner. The city is also home to a wide range of international cuisines, making it a magnet for foodies.
  • Challenges: San Francisco, like most Cali cities, also has several challenges. The cost of living is very high, and housing can be hard to find. However, for many, the benefits outweigh these challenges.

Which California City is Right for You?

Deciding which California city to move to depends on the lifestyle you’re seeking, your chosen career, and what you value most in a community.

Other California cities to consider include:

• San Diego, California

• Sacramento, California

• Fresno, California

• Santa Barbara, California

• Oakland, California

Each of these California cities has something unique to offer. Whichever one you choose, you’ll find yourself in one of the top places to live in the Golden State.

When you’re not RV camping in Colorado, finding a safe, secure place to store your RV is critical. Colorado’s often extreme weather, from heavy snow to intense sunlight, can take a heavy toll on your RV. Here are some storage options to consider:

  • RV Self Storage: Many iStorage facilites offer RV parking storage for safe and convenient vehicle storage. They provide a locked space for your RV and often offer month-to-month rental options, making it easy to store your camper between trips.
  • Covered RV Storage: If you’re looking for extra protection from the elements, covered RV storage is a great choice. Covered RV storage from iStorage protects your RV from snow, hail, and the harsh Colorado sun.
  • Indoor Storage: Teardrop and other, smaller RVs can often fit inside a self-storage unit. If you’d like the benefits of indoor, covered storage but don’t need all that space, you might consider renting a suitably-sized storage unit from iStorage.

RV camping in Colorado offers endless adventures, from the culture of Fort Collins to the scenic beauty of Colorado Springs. Whether you’re an experienced RV traveler or newbie, there’s a perfect spot for you in this stunning state. When you’re not on the road, store your vehicle with RV storage from iStorage to protect your RV investment and ensure it’s ready for your next camping adventure!
