If you’re thinking of putting your items in self-storage, or if you’re one of millions of Americans who already have a storage unit, it’s important to know how to protect your stored items. In the winter months, extreme cold can damage your belongings. Even worse is that the signs of cold damage are hard to see until it’s too late. Figure out which items are vulnerable and how to protect them with this guide from NSA Storage.

What Causes Cold Damage in Self Storage?

You might think that cold damage is all about freezing temps. What actually causes most cold damage, however, is moisture.

Person leaning against windowsill with a window covered in condensation.

Falling temperatures cause moisture in the air to turn into condensation. This moisture can cause wood to warp, metal to rust, and electronics to corrode. It also causes mold and mildew, which can be extremely damaging to many items.

Another reason for cold damage is that, when something freezes, it contracts. Then, when it warms up again, it expands. If this happens often enough, the contraction and expansion can weaken and even destroy, many items. That’s why major temperature swings can cause damage while something is in a storage unit.

To summarize, cold damage in storage can be caused by:

  • Temperatures below 32°F or 0°C
  • Rapid or constant temperature swings
  • Condensation and the moisture it creates
  • Contraction and expansion of materials

Items that are Most at Risk for Cold Damage in Storage

There are a wide range of items that are at risk of cold damage in storage. Below we’ll take a look at all of them, what can happen, and how to avoid costly or irreversible damage.

Electronic Equipment

Electronics are one of the most commonly damaged items in storage due to cold. Moisture from condensation is typically the culprit, damaging internal components, screens, and, especially, batteries.

Electronics most at risk include:

  • TVs
  • Computers, including laptops and PCs
  • Gaming consoles
  • Printers
  • Stereo equipment like speakers, subwoofers, etc.

Also, keep in mind that tools and appliances are also electronics, just on a bigger scale. These include:

  • Fridges and freezers
  • Washers
  • Dryers
  • Power tools
  • Lawn equipment

Damage Prevention Tips:

  • Whenever possible, store electronics in their original packaging
  • Store them off of the floor
  • Wrap electronics in moving blankets if you don’t have their original packaging

Furniture

Many kinds of common furniture can be damaged by cold while in storage. The expansion and contraction leads to cracking, warping, and other damage. Leather-bound furniture can dry out and crack, and any type of fabric can grow mold and mildew if it gets wet.

Furniture most at risk include:

  • Anything made of wood, like tables, chairs, and dressers
  • Furniture with veneers
  • Upholstered furniture
  • Leather furniture

Damage Prevention Tips

  • Don’t cover furniture in plastic
  • Use breathable covers or moving pads
  • Ensure good ventilation

Clothing and Textiles

Moisture can cause mold and mildew, which breaks down the fabric. This can happen quite quickly, so prevention is a must.

Clothing and textiles most at risk include:

  • Anything made with leather
  • Wool clothing
  • Vintage clothes
  • Wedding dresses
  • Blankets
  • Rugs

Damage Prevention Tips

  • Clean everything well before storage
  • Dry thoroughly
  • Use garment bags or wardrobe boxes

Documents, Photos, and Paperwork

It’s probably not a surprise that most paper can be negatively affected by moisture. Condensation due to cold swings affects papers, documents and photos, which can become brittle, discolored, and cracked. Even worse, restoring them afterward is almost impossible.

Paper items most at risk include:

  • Photographs
  • Legal docs
  • Books
  • Comic books
  • Paintings
  • Posters

Damage Prevention Tips

  • Keep papers off of concrete floors
  • Use specialized archival boxes

Common Kitchen Items

Many everyday kitchen items were never designed to be frozen, especially if they contain liquids. Expansion can make them brittle and even cause some containers to burst.

Common kitchen items most at risk include:

  • Ceramics
  • Candles
  • Glassware
  • Tableware
  • Anything with liquid inside

Damage Prevention Tips

  • Dry everything well
  • Use boxes with plenty of padding
  • Wrap things well with paper
  • Avoid storing liquids

Musical Instruments

Corroded trumpet in an open case.

Musical instruments are especially sensitive to extreme cold. Cold air, for example, affects their tension. Expansion and contraction damages wood integrity, also, and can damage metal components.

Musical instruments most at risk include:

  • Pianos
  • Brass instruments like trombones, and trumpets
  • Woodwind instruments like clarinets, flutes, and saxophones
  • String instruments like guitars, violins, violas, and cellos

Prevention Tips

  • Store instruments in their hard case
  • Clean and dry them well before storage
  • Keep them off concrete floors
  • For long-term storage, loosen their strings

Climate Controlled Storage: A Good Solution to Cold Damage

One of the very best ways to prevent cold damage in storage is to use a climate controlled storage unit. These specialized storage units provide several benefits over normal units, including:

  • Humidity control
  • Temperature maintenance
  • Improved air circulation
  • Protection from direct sunlight

Climate controlled storage units keep the temperature and humidity stable year-round. This prevents the contraction, expansion, and condensation that are the main cause of cold damage in storage. It’s like having an extra layer of protection for every item you have in your storage unit! If you live in an area that also has hot or humid summers, climate-control is a no-brainer for your stored items.

Rent a Climate Controlled Storage Unit with NSA Storage

If you’re going to rent a storage unit to store things you want to keep, protect, and preserve, the tips above will definitely help. Most are easy to use and don’t require anything special or costly.

To reserve a climate controlled storage unit from NSA Storage, simply click the link and fill in your info! Once you’re done, your storage units will be ready to use at your discretion! Until then, be sure to stay warm!

The 4th of July is fun, the blazing sun can, unfortunately, lead to some serious safety issues. That’s why knowing what not to store in the summer heat is important. It’s info that can protect your family and ensure your holiday isn’t interrupted by a trip to the emergency room. NSA Storage put together the following information-packed article. If you’re keen to learn about 4th of July safety, read on!

What’s the Problem with Summer Heat?

Many folks don’t realize that their garages, backyard sheds, and outdoor storage units can become extremely hot in summertime. For example, it’s not unusual for temperatures to rise above 120°F or higher on a hot, sunny summer day.

Storing the wrong items in this extreme heat is risky because it can cause a fire or even an explosion. Fireworks and gasoline are, after all, explosive by design. This can lead to damage to your home or, even worse, injuries to you, your family, and your guests.

At the very least, extreme heat can damage or destroy many summer-related household items, and dampen your holiday fun. That’s why, when preparing for your Independence Day celebration, being aware of extreme heat, and storing certain things correctly, is important.

Summer Items that Should Never be Stored in a High Heat Environment

There’s no denying that some things just don’t do well in extreme heat. Things made of plastic can melt, for example, while others might warp, crack, or leak. Other summer items that are more volatile can even explode when exposed to extreme summer heat.

Below is a detailed list of items you should never store in a high-heat environment and why:

1. Propane Gas Tanks

There are literally millions of propane gas tanks being used in America during the 4th of July. While convenient and safe to use, these tanks can leak or even explode if exposed to extreme heat. For that reason, you should never store a propane gas tank in these places:

A propane tank attached to a grill.
  • An outdoor shed exposed directly to the sun
  • The trunk of a car
  • The back of a pickup truck
  • The attic
  • Near a furnace or hot water heater

2. Fireworks

For many, fireworks are the most fun part of the 4th of July! They’re also, unfortunately, one of the biggest causes of holiday accidents and injuries.

The reason why is simple; fireworks are extremely flammable and made to explode. That includes cherry bombs, firecrackers, bottle rockets and many more. For these reasons, fireworks should always:

  • Be stored in a cool, dry place
  • Be protected from the sun at all times
  • Be kept away from any heat sources like a BBQ grill, HVAC system, water heater, furnace, fire pit, fireplace, etc.
  • Be kept safely away from small children

3. Toys and Tools Made from Plastic, Rubber, or Vinyl

Extreme heat can cause items made from vinyl, plastic, or rubber to badly melt or warp. It can also cause different items to stick together, tear, or become brittle and weak. Below are some excellent tips for storing plastic, rubber, and vinyl items safely:

A pool with an inner tube, pool noodles, and floating balls on the surface.
  • Store anything made from these three materials in a cool place.
  • Also be sure to store these items in a dry place to prevent mold and mildew, which can discolor, damage, or even ruin plastics and vinyl.
  • Never store these items in direct sunlight, or in hot sheds.

Below is a list of the most common vinyl, plastic, and rubber items made for summer. All need to be protected from extreme heat, including:

  • Garden hoses
  • Vinyl welcome mats
  • Inflatable kiddie pools
  • Pool floats and rafts
  • Swim rings and Floaties
  • Pool liners (if not installed yet)
  • Rubber car mats
  • Toys made a vinyl or rubber like dodgeballs, kick balls and bouncy balls
  • Any shoes with rubber souls
  • Yoga Mats
  • Vinyl tablecloths
  • Jumper cables
  • Rubber gloves
  • Plastic Buckets

4. Paint and Paint Thinners

You might not think of paint or paint dinners as dangerous but, unfortunately, they are. For example, paint thinner, a solvent, is extremely flammable. Cans of spray paint are the same and can explode under the pressure caused by extreme heat.

For this reason, it’s best to store paint and paint thinners indoors in a space that’s temperature controlled. The garage, mud room, or basement are good choices. An outdoor shed, not so much.

5. Electronic Items

Many electronic items have batteries and batteries do not do well under extreme heat circumstances. Some types of batteries can leak acid and, under extreme conditions, catch fire.

Extreme heat can also damage the wires, screens and other parts of your electronic tchotchkes, including speakers, cell phones, oscillating fans, computers, laptops, and more. For these reasons, storing your electronics in a cool, dry place is a must.

6. Perishable Foods

While a can of vegetables or a jar of tomato sauce typically won’t explode under extreme heat, it will spoil. The reason why is that heat speeds up the spoilage process and can even cause some cans to swell and deform.

Like many of the other items on this list, always store perishable foods and a cool, dry place. The attic and basement are not a good choice, and neither is an outdoor shed.

Safer Storage: Where Should You Store to Avoid Heat Risks?

Now that we’ve talked about what not to store in extreme heat, let’s talk about better storage options. There’s probably a cool, dry place in your home, of course, but you should also consider:

  • Insulated Cabinets in your Garage– These are great for chemicals, cleaners, paints, and other home maintenance items.
  • Coolers and Insulated Boxes– Sure, these are great for food. However, you also can use them to store fireworks and other items safely. Be sure to crack the lid open slightly for airflow.
  • The Basement– If you’re lucky enough to have a basement, be sure to store a lot of these items there for 4th of July safety.
  • Your Laundry Room– Convenient and much safer than, for example, a backyard shed when talking about heat sensitive items.
  • A Climate-Controlled Storage Unit– These are specialized storage units you can rent on a month-to-month basis. They keep the temperature and humidity inside stable throughout the year, protecting your things from extreme heat and cold. If you have a lot of things you need to protect from the summer heat, a climate-controlled storage unit is a smart choice.

Final Thoughts about Storing Summer Items Safely During the 4th of July

Independence Day is one of the most beloved holidays in the United States, celebrated by millions annually. We hope the tips and advice given today keep you, your family, and your friends safe, no matter where or how you’re celebrating.

At NSA Storage, we see customers storing summer-related items all the time—although never flammables, please. Few other hobbies combine taste, tradition, knowledge, and investment opportunities like collecting wine does. Whether you collect for long-term value or simply for the enjoyment of a good glass, starting a wine collection can be tricky.

To help you get started on a great sip, NSA Storage put together the following guide to starting your own wine collection. In it you’ll find tips to help you get into your hobby.

What Makes Wine Collectible?

A woman looking at a bottle of wine in a liquor store aisle.

Before you get started, it’s important to know what makes wine collectible. More specifically, what makes a certain wine more collectible than another, not-so-collectible wine. Here are a few characteristics that will make one wine more collectible than another:

  • The Wine’s Age– The metaphor “like fine wine, it gets better with age” is said for a reason; older wines can be tastier, and tastier wines demand higher prices.
  • The Size of the Production or Batch– A popular wine made in a small batch can increase in value more quickly than wines made in large batches.
  • The Wine’s Vintage– Like many collectibles, wines from certain years are more valuable than others.
  • The Wine’s Region– The region where a wine’s made can affect its taste, body, etc. For that reason, wines from some areas of the world (i.e., regions) are more collectible than others.
  • The Winery’s Reputation– Wines from a famous or beloved vineyard are more likely to increase in value than wines from one that is unknown or new.

How to Start a Wine Collection: Step-by-Step

If you follow the steps below, you’ll make better decisions and grow a more valuable, interesting, and delicious wine collection:

Step 1: Set a Goal

When you start, ask yourself this question: why do you want to collect wine? For fun? As an investment? To have good wine around at all times? Something else? Whatever your answer happens to be, focus on that when collecting your wine. Your goal should guide all of your buying decisions.

Step 2: Do Your Due Diligence

There’s a lot of helpful information about wine collecting out there today, including on Google, Youtube, and other social media outlets. Experts suggest using them all to educate yourself about any wines you desire for your collection, including:

  • Wine magazines
  • Wine websites
  • Books by wine experts
  • Online forums
  • YouTube Videos
  • Wine-centric Facebook groups

Step 3: Set a Budget Before Starting

No matter what you collect as a hobby, setting a budget is important. That way, you won’t overspend and let your hobby take over your life, at least financially.

The thing about wine is that a bottle can range from ten dollars to thousands of dollars per bottle. You could easily spend a few thousand dollars and still have a rather small collection. On the other hand, if you spend wisely on more affordable bottles, you could grow a nice collection for a reasonable cost.

In short, choosing and sticking to a budget before starting your wine collection is highly recommended. If anything, it could prevent you from making decisions that negatively affect your finances.

Step 4: Start Small

Wine collections come in many different sizes. When you’re just starting, yours is undoubtedly going to be small compared to others. Don’t worry about that. Just begin with a selection of bottles that you’ve researched and are confident will age well.

For example, purchase a case of wine you’ve enjoyed from a reputable winery you visited. (They often sell at a discount when you buy directly from them after a tasting!) You can also get a bottle or two regularly from your local wine store expert who lets you know when something good arrives.

Before you know it, with a little bit of care and effort, you’ll be a wine collector!

Step 5: Buy Wine from Trusted Sources

Creating a wine collection takes knowledge, effort, time and, most importantly, trusted sources. People and organizations who know their wines intimately and will lead you in the right direction. Some of the best trusted sources when creating a wine collection include:

Rows of grape vines in a field at a winery.
  • Reputable, local wine stores
  • Wineries
  • Online wine marketplaces
  • Other wine collectors

Where Can You Find Wines that are Collectible

If you’re just starting, you might think the only place you can buy wine is from a liquor store or a winery. The fact is, though, that you can find collectible wines at many other places. They include:

  • Auctions- Online and in person auctions are a great place to find rare or vintage bottles of wine.
  • Wine Clubs- Many cities and towns have wine clubs that offer collectible bottles you won’t find in regular retail stores.
  • Estate Sales- Estate sales are a great place to find older and often vintage wines at excellent prices.
  • Wine Tastings- Wine tastings are a great place to find wine and also a lot of fun! You’ll meet the wine makers, taste different wines and get answers to your most important collecting questions.
  • Winery Direct- Many vineyards allow you to buy directly from them through winery direct. If you find one you like and trust, it’s an easy, more secure way to get bottles for your collection.

Tips for Storing a Wine Collection

Like many collectibles, it’s very important that you store your wine correctly. If you don’t, you can ruin even the best bottle and destroy your investment at the same time. Below or a few top tips for storing your wine collection correctly so that it stays in pristine, and tasty, condition:

  • Always store your wine between 55°F and 58°F.
  • Prevent any sudden heat or temperature changes that can affect your wine. Storing in the attic, for example, is not a good idea.
  • Never store wine in direct sunlight or near heat sources like an oven or furnace.
  • Keep the humidity where you store your wine between 60% and 70%. If it’s too dry, your corks will shrink. If it’s too humid, your wine labels may peel off.
  • Store your wine where it’s always dark, quiet, and cool.
  • Don’t store your wine next to any type of machine that vibrates. For example example, a washing machine, dishwasher, or dryer

When you’re moving to a new home, packing things usually takes the most time and energy. That goes double for fragile items, which need to be packed correctly so they make it to your new home undamaged. Proper packing becomes even more essential if you plan to store your breakable items in self storage, especially long-term.

That’s easier said than done, however, since the average person has no idea how to pack fragile items. If that’s you, and you can’t pack a piece of stemware or crystal to save your life, you’re in luck! NSA Storage crafted the article below just for you, packed with tips, hacks, and advice for packing fragile stuff!

If you’re moving soon and need help making sure your breakable items stay in good shape while stored, read on. The info below will help you become a item packing pro!

Why Packing Fragile Items Correctly is Important

Why is it so important to pack fragile items correctly? Because if you don’t, they can:

  • Crack, break, or fall apart when being moved.
  • Be scratched, damaged or destroyed during storage.
  • Be so loose in their box that they bang up against each other and break.
  • Costs you a lot of money (and just as many tears) to replace.

What Packing Supplies and Tools Do You Need?

As with any big task, having the right tools and supplies on hand when you pack fragile items is critical. Below is a list of the supplies and tools you’ll need to make packing your breakable items safer and faster:

  • Double corrugated dish pack boxes
  • Telescoping mirror boxes
  • Bubble wrap
  • Clean, ink-free packing paper
  • Packing peanuts
  • Packing tape
  • Indelible ink markers for labeling packed boxes

The Most Common Fragile Items

If you’re not sure what counts as “fragile”, the list below will help:

A white china set including plates, teacups, and teapots.
  • Ceramic dishes and bowls
  • Glass cups, mugs, and other items
  • Mirrors
  • Frames
  • Crystal stemware and other crystal items
  • Holiday ornaments
  • Artwork like statues and sculptures
  • Collectibles

Top 9 Tips for How to Pack Fragile Items for Self Storage

1. Be Sure to Use the Correct Box(es)

Most fragile items can be packed in large, 6-cubic-feet dish pack boxes. These are double corrugated boxes that are super strong. Mirrors and large pictures, on the other hand, need mirror boxes. These telescoping boxes protect these large, heavy, awkward, fragile items.

2. Wrap Fragile Items with Plenty of Packing Paper

Now is definitely not the time to skimp on supplies, especially packing paper. Most breakable items need at least four or five sheets to be well packed and padded and not get damaged. Don’t skimp on the paper!

3. Add Padding to Each Box Before Starting

Be sure to crumple a couple of dozen pieces of packing paper to pad the bottom of each box. This will serve as excellent padding that will absorb any shocks or drops when moving and storing your breakable items. Squish them down into the bottom of the box!

 4. Pack Things Gently but Tightly

The last thing you want is for your fragile things to be loose in their box. Instead, you want to pack fragile items gently with paper but also tightly. That way, there’s less chance that any sudden movements, which are normal when moving and storing things, will cause damage.

5. Use Bubble Wrap and Packing Peanuts Sparingly

Cardboard boxes full of bubble wrap.

You might think that bubble wrap and peanuts should be used for all fragile items, but that’s not true. The vast majority of fragile items can be well packed with simple, clean, ink-free packing paper. If you have super fragile things that need peanuts or bubble wrap, go for it, but don’t use them on everything.

6. Plates Should be Packed Standing on Edge

Everyone knows that, in your cupboards, you stack plates flat on top of each other. However, when packing plates, it’s best to wrap them in paper and then stand them on their edge in the box.

Experts recommend wrapping 3 or 4 plates together, maximum, and then standing them on their edge together. Start from large plates and work your way to smaller and smaller plates as you go up.

7. Pack Glasses and Stemware Standing Up

Glasses and stemware should always be packed standing straight up like they would be in your kitchen cabinets. Never lay any type of glass or stemware on its side for packing or storage. Even a small amount of pressure can break them.

8. Use Box Dividers for the Most Fragile Items

You might’ve seen box dividers when you purchased a case of wine or some other beverage in glass bottles. They are basically cardboard dividers that keep each bottle from banging together and breaking. The same dividers can be used to pack very fragile stemware and other items and make it much easier.

9. Label All Your Boxes Well

This isn’t a packing tip, per se, but one that will still help you. Labeling all of your boxes clearly with indelible ink will make moving into your new home much easier. Thanks to that labeling, you’ll know exactly which box has what, and where it should go in your new home.

Should You Store Fragile Items in a Climate Controlled Storage Unit?

Depending on the type of fragile items you need to store, a climate controlled storage unit might be best. These specialized units keep the temperature and the humidity stable throughout the year. That means, for example, that high humidity won’t be a problem, and neither will temperature spikes both hot and cold.

Experts recommend packing the following items in a climate controlled storage unit:

  • Expensive artwork
  • High-end electronic equipment
  • Pictures and picture albums
  • High-end upholstered furniture
  • Anything that can be affected by high humidity or extreme temperatures

Store Your Fragile Items with NSA Storage

Hopefully the tips and hacks provided today will empower you to pack your breakable items like a pro. Once you get started, you’ll find that it’s not as difficult as it might have seemed. Just take your time, be careful, and if you need to, use extra packing paper.

If you need a clean, safe, and secure storage unit to store your fragile things, NSA Storage can help. NSA has storage facilities across the United States, including climate controlled storage units. Renting a self-storage unit is a great way to free up space in your home or business while keeping your belongings safe. However, proper storage techniques are essential to ensure your items remain in good condition for the long term. Whether you’re storing furniture, electronics, clothing, or even vehicles, taking the right precautions can prevent damage and deterioration. Below, we’ll walk you through the best practices and top self-storage tips for storing different types of items so you can keep your possessions in top shape.

What Do I Need for Proper Self-Storage?

Before you begin packing your items for storage, gather the right materials to keep them protected. Here are some essential supplies you may need:

  • Sturdy cardboard boxes or plastic storage bins
  • Packing tape and labels for organization
  • Bubble wrap and packing paper for fragile items
  • Furniture blankets or padded covers
  • Plastic sheeting or drop cloths
  • Silica gel packets for moisture control
  • Anti-static bubble wrap for electronics
  • Heavy-duty tarps or weatherproof covers for vehicles
  • Shelving units to maximize space

How to Store Furniture

Furniture, especially wooden and upholstered pieces, requires special care when placed in storage. Start by cleaning and drying each item thoroughly to prevent mold, mildew, or unpleasant odors from developing. Disassemble large pieces such as tables, bed frames, and bookshelves to save space and reduce the risk of damage during transport. Wrap wooden furniture in furniture blankets or padded covers to protect against scratches and dents, and avoid using plastic directly on wood, as it can trap moisture.

A room full of carboard boxes next to a large armchair wrapped in plastic covering for storage.

For upholstered items, consider using breathable fabric covers to shield them from dust while allowing air circulation. If possible, store furniture off the ground on pallets to protect against potential flooding or moisture buildup.

How to Store Electronics

Electronic devices, including televisions, computers, and gaming consoles, are sensitive to temperature fluctuations and humidity. If your self-storage facility offers climate-controlled units, it’s best to use one to protect your electronics from extreme conditions.

Before placing them in storage, remove all batteries to prevent leaks and corrosion. Whenever possible, use the original packaging for added protection, or wrap electronics in anti-static bubble wrap and place them in sturdy, well-padded boxes. Store screens upright and avoid stacking heavy items on top of electronics to prevent cracks or internal damage. Label cords and accessories to make reassembly easier when retrieving your items.

How to Store Clothing

Keeping your clothing in good condition while in storage requires proper cleaning and packing techniques. Wash and dry all garments thoroughly before storing to prevent stains from setting and to deter pests. Fold and place clothing in plastic storage bins with airtight lids to keep out moisture and insects. For delicate or valuable clothing items such as wedding dresses or vintage apparel, consider using garment bags and hanging them on a clothing rack inside your unit. Adding silica gel packets to your storage containers can help absorb excess moisture and reduce the risk of mold and mildew.

How to Store Vehicles and RVs

Whether you’re storing a car, motorcycle, boat, or RV, preparation is key to keeping your vehicle in good condition. Begin by cleaning both the interior and exterior thoroughly to remove dirt, grime, and food particles that might attract pests. Top off fluids, including the fuel, and add a fuel stabilizer to prevent degradation. Inflate tires to the recommended pressure to avoid flat spots from long-term storage. Disconnect the battery or use a trickle charger to prevent it from losing charge over time. If possible, cover your vehicle with a breathable, weather-resistant cover to shield it from dust and debris. For added protection, consider an indoor or covered garage storage space.

How to Store Collectibles and Valuable Items

If you’re placing valuable or sentimental items in storage, extra precautions can help preserve their condition. For fragile collectibles such as glassware, figurines, or antiques, use plenty of cushioning material such as bubble wrap or foam padding. Store fragile items in sturdy boxes with clear labels, and avoid stacking heavy objects on top.

Climate-controlled units are ideal for temperature-sensitive items like artwork, vinyl records, or vintage books. If you’re storing coins, stamps, or trading cards, keep them in protective sleeves or albums to prevent exposure to dust and humidity. Whenever possible, place high-value items on elevated shelves to reduce the risk of accidental damage or water exposure.

How to Store Seasonal Decorations

Cardboard boxes labeled as "Xmas Lights" and "Tree Decorations."

Holiday decorations can take up a lot of space at home, making storage units a great solution. Before storing, sort decorations by holiday or theme to make retrieval easier when the season comes around.

Wrap fragile ornaments in tissue paper or bubble wrap and store them in divided containers to prevent breakage. Coil string lights neatly to avoid tangles, and consider placing them in sealed plastic bags or dedicated storage reels. Artificial trees should be disassembled and stored in a durable tree bag or box. Keeping decorations in labeled plastic bins will protect them from dust and moisture while making it easy to find what you need next season.

How to Store Documents

Important paperwork, including legal documents, tax records, and business files, should be stored carefully to prevent damage over time. Use fireproof and waterproof storage containers for the most critical documents. For general paperwork, sturdy file boxes with hanging folders can help keep everything organized. Climate-controlled storage is recommended to prevent humidity from causing paper to become brittle or moldy. Avoid placing documents directly on the floor to reduce the risk of water damage in case of a leak. Consider digitizing essential records as a backup in case anything happens to the physical copies.

How to Store Business Inventory

For business owners, a storage unit can provide a cost-effective solution for managing excess inventory. To maintain an organized and efficient business inventory storage space, categorize inventory and use shelving units to maximize vertical space. Clearly label all boxes and create an inventory list to track stored items. Protect merchandise from dust and moisture by using sealed plastic bins when necessary. If you have temperature-sensitive products, consider renting a climate-controlled unit to preserve their quality. Regularly visiting your storage unit to rotate stock and keep inventory updated will help prevent lost or forgotten items.

Select NSA self-storage facilities offer wine storage units for storing wine bottles or cases. This option is perfect for winery or restaurant owners with a need to store excess inventory off-site. Our climate-controlled units provide the ideal environment for both storage and aging.

How to Store Sporting Equipment

Bikes hanging on ceiling hooks.

Sporting equipment such as bicycles, golf clubs, camping gear, and skis should be cleaned and dried before storage to prevent rust and deterioration. Disassemble large items when possible to save space. Store bicycles on racks or hang them from hooks to keep them off the ground and prevent tire damage.

Keep golf clubs in their bags with protective covers, and store camping gear in labeled plastic bins. For seasonal gear like skis or snowboards, consider climate-controlled storage to prevent warping or cracking due to temperature fluctuations.

How to Store Mattresses and Bedding

Proper storage of mattresses and bedding can help prevent damage from dust, pests, and moisture. Clean and air out mattresses before storage, and use a breathable mattress bag to protect against dirt and insects. Store mattresses flat to prevent sagging, or stand them upright against a wall for short-term storage. Keep pillows, blankets, and sheets in vacuum-sealed bags or plastic bins to minimize space and protect against dust. If storing for an extended period, consider using a climate-controlled unit to prevent mold and mildew growth.

How to Store Household Appliances

Household appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, and microwaves require careful preparation before going into storage. Start by cleaning and drying all appliances thoroughly to prevent mold and mildew. Leave refrigerator and freezer doors slightly open to allow air circulation and prevent odors. Secure cords and hoses with zip ties and place them inside the appliance or in a labeled bag.

If possible, store appliances upright to avoid internal damage, and use furniture blankets or padded covers for extra protection. Climate-controlled units are recommended for long-term storage of appliances to prevent temperature-related wear and tear.

Self-Storage FAQs

How do I protect my items from humidity and pests?

To protect your belongings from humidity and pests, use airtight plastic containers instead of cardboard boxes, which can absorb moisture. Place silica gel packets or moisture absorbers inside storage bins to prevent mold and mildew. Avoid storing perishable items, as they can attract rodents and insects. If your items are particularly sensitive to humidity, consider renting a climate-controlled unit to maintain stable temperature and moisture levels.

How should I organize my storage unit for easy access?

To maximize space and keep your storage unit organized, start by placing larger, less frequently used items toward the back. Keep frequently accessed items near the front for convenience. Use shelving units to stack boxes safely and create aisles so you can navigate the unit easily. Clearly label all boxes and create an inventory list to track where everything is stored.

For more self-storage tips on how to organize your storage unit, read our helpful storage organization guide.

What is the best way to store fragile items?

Fragile items should be wrapped in bubble wrap or packing paper and stored in sturdy, well-padded boxes. Avoid stacking heavy items on top of delicate belongings. For glassware and dishes, use dish dividers or wrap each piece individually. Mark fragile boxes clearly and store them on elevated shelves to prevent accidental damage. If storing long-term, ensure the storage environment is stable and free from excessive moisture or temperature changes.

Is climate-controlled storage necessary for my belongings?

Climate-controlled storage is highly recommended for items that are sensitive to temperature fluctuations and humidity. Electronics, wooden furniture, documents, artwork, and collectibles can all suffer damage from extreme heat, cold, or moisture. If you’re planning to store items long-term or live in an area with drastic seasonal changes, a climate-controlled unit provides extra protection and peace of mind.

You might be surprised to learn that stamp collecting is one of the oldest hobbies in the world. It’s been popular ever since 1840, when the first postage stamp featured a profile of Great Britain’s Queen Victoria. Today, people collect stamps for many different reasons. Some do it for the history, while others do it for fun or the thrill of the hunt. The one question most collectors have no matter why they collect, however, is this: is my stamp collection valuable?

To help you find out, NSA Storage put together this fact-filled article that’s loaded with actionable information. Whether you’ve been stamp collecting for years or just inherited a stamp collection of your own, the info below will help you figure out what it’s worth. Read on to find out more and also learn why the proper stamp collection storage is important.

How To Tell if Your Stamp Collection is Valuable

As with all things we humans collect, some stamps are more valuable than others. Some extremely rare and unique stamps can be worth millions, but the average stamp is usually worth its regular postage price. Being able to tell the difference is a valuable skill for stamp collectors. To do that, here are 4 excellent tips:

  1. Check the Age of the Stamp
  • The older the stamp, the more valuable it’s likely to be.
  • Stamps printed before 1950 are in very high demand.
  • Any stamp from the 1800s will be extremely valuable simply because of its rarity.
  1. Look Closely at the Stamp’s Condition
  • Like most collectibles, a stamp in perfect condition is worth more than a stamp with nicks, tears, blotches, and other imperfections.
  • Use a magnifying glass or other magnification device to look closely at any stamp you might purchase.
  1. Search for Stamps that are Rare, Imperfect, or Unique
  • Rare stamps, as you might imagine, are worth more than everyday stamps.
  • Ironically, some stamps with printing errors are often worth more than their correctly printed counterparts.
  • Limited edition stamps will often (but not always) become more valuable with time.
  1. Check to See if Your Stamp is Postmarked (or Not)
  • Another interesting fact about stamp collecting is that an unused stamp is often worth more than one with a postmark.
  • Postmark or not, extremely rare stamps are just as valuable.
  1. Where Was the Stamp Printed?
  • Many collectible stamps were printed in the United Kingdom and other European countries. These are often more valuable than stamps from the United States because they’re older.
  • Colonial American stamps from the 1800s are also highly collectible and valuable.

How to Get Your Stamp Collection Appraised

One of the best ways to find out if your stamp collection is valuable is to have it appraised by an expert. If you think your stamp collection might be worth more than just a few dollars, contact these experts to find out:

  • A Local Stamp Dealer in Your Area– You can find stamp dealers online quite easily. Then, you can bring your stamps over, have them professionally examined and inspected, and get a rough estimate of their value.
  • A Professional Stamp Appraiser– If you have a large or rare collection of stamps, a professional appraiser is your best bet. These are men and women who have many years of experience in the stamp collecting field. Be prepared, however, as most will charge you a relatively steep fee for the service.
  • A Stamp Collecting Club– If you have a stamp collecting club in your area you’re in luck! These clubs often have expert appraisers as members. At the very least, they can let you know what to look for and help you identify any valuable stamps you might own.
  • Online Stamp Resources– There are several websites where you can get help estimating the value of your stamp collection. They include Stamp World, Mystic Stamp Company, and even eBay. On eBay you can compare your stamps with similar stamps being sold to get an accurate estimate of their value.

Examples of Valuable Stamps

In the animals of stamp collecting, some stamps have left an indelible mark. Below are three of the most famous examples of stamps in the world:

  1. The Inverted Jenny (U.S.)- This unique stamp has a printing error: the plane on the stamp is flying upside-down! That makes it worth over $1 million.
  2. British Guiana 1c Magenta – This is the world’s most valuable stamp, which was sold for over $8 million!
  3. Blue Military Stamp of 1868 (Japan) – This is a rare and highly sought after stamp with a very high value.

Tips for Stamp Storage

Unlike some collectibles, stamps are quite fragile. They can easily be damaged or even destroyed by moisture, dust, dirt, and other debris. For that reason, storing them correctly is important so that they continue to increase in value.

Below we’ve listed some of the top tips for stamp storage to help you keep your collection in pristine condition.

  • Use Stamp Albums– Stamp albums help you keep your stamps flat as well as clean. They also help you organize them into types, groupings, years, etc. Buy acid free stamp albums to prevent damage to your stamps.
  • Don’t Use Plastic Bags– Plastic bags can trap moisture that causes stamps to stick. Instead, use stamp sleeves or the aforementioned albums.
  • Keep Your Stamps in a Cool, Dry Place– No matter what you used to store your stamps, always store them in a cool, dry place. That means no attics or basements, which are high in humidity and heat, respectively, that can destroy your precious stamps.
  • Never Leave Your Stamps Exposed to Sunlight (Even Indirect Sunlight)– Sunlight is the enemy of any stamp collection and should be avoided at all costs.
  • Don’t Handle Your Stamps Without Using Lightweight Gloves– The oils on your hands and fingers can damage your stamps. Thin, lightweight gloves should always be used, especially with your most valuable stamps.

Use Climate Controlled Storage For Your Stamp Collection

If your stamp collection is large and valuable, and you need to store it somewhere safe and secure, a climate controlled storage unit is your best choice. These specialized storage units keep the temperature and humidity stable throughout the year, which is exactly what your stamps need. Some of the benefits of a climate controlled self storage unit include:

  • Protection from humidity and temperature swings
  • Safety from theft, damage, prying hands, etc.
  • You can organize your stamp collection any way you like in your storage unit. This can make your hobby even more fun and interesting.

Final Stamp of Approval

Collecting stamps is an interesting, satisfying hobby, no doubt. We hope the information provided today will empower you to figure out just how valuable your stamp collection might be. At the end of the day, however, most stamp collectors agree that the hobby itself is more than enough reward.

At NSA Storage, we help people with large stamp collections to store there easily, safely and securely. That includes our climate controlled storage units, which are highly recommended for large, valuable stamp collections. You can easily reserve a storage unit online for your stamp collection or anything else you need or want to store. Once you’re done, your storage unit will be ready to store every stamp in your collection!

If there’s one thing in life you can be sure of, it’s that things will always change. Situations change, people change, and lives change, and sometimes those changes can be a bit difficult. During these life transitions, having access to a self-storage unit can be incredibly helpful. Why? You’ll find several excellent answers to that question, below. If you’re dealing with life changes and need help and advice, read on. The good folks at NSA Storage have insightful, actionable info on how self storage helps in life transitions, below!

Why Do People Use Self-Storage?

Before we look at how self storage helps in life transitions, it’s helpful to know why people use self storage. The fact is, most folks turn to self storage units for several reasons, including the following:

  • Keeping cherished or precious belongings safe while changes are happening.
  • Creating more usable living space at home while making decisions about certain possessions.
  • Protecting their personal belongings from damage before or after a natural disaster.
  • Reducing clutter and organizing, which can help manage emotional trauma and stress.
  • Creating more usable living space in their home, office, etc.

Below are several, more specific, reasons why people use self storage during several common life transitions. As you’ll see, most of them will definitely help during traumatic, stressful or difficult changes in your life.

The Death of a Loved One

One of the most challenging life transitions we all encounter is losing a loved one. Whether a grandparent, parent, or child, sorting through their belongings can be very difficult and emotional.

In situations like these, a self storage unit can provide a temporary place to store that person’s belongings safely. More importantly, during that time, family members can focus on grieving and celebrating the life of their departed loved one. Once they’re ready, their items will be waiting in a secure storage unit. Donating, keeping, or passing on items is easier when they’re organized in a storage space.

Benefits:

  • More time to make thoughtful decisions about certain belongings. No rushing needed.
  • Sentimental or valuable items will be secure until a decision is made on where, or to whom, they will go.
  • A storage unit can provide a neutral space to reduce emotions and emotional stress.

Moving from One Home to Another

Couple looking at stacks of moving boxes.

Moving is one of the most stressful situations that most people will encounter in their life. Even if it’s a short move across town, organizing, packing, and physically moving your belongings can be extremely taxing.

For many people, moving can seem overwhelming, but having a storage unit can make it much easier.  Storage units are a flexible, affordable solution to keep items safe until everything has been moved.

Benefits:

  • You can keep everything organized while you pack and unpack.
  • If your new home closing is delayed, a storage unit can provide a safe, secure place for your belongings.
  • A storage unit provides extra space to store furniture and other items temporarily. This can be extremely helpful while you pack, donate, and otherwise organize your valuables.
  • You can take items from storage to your new home at your own pace.

Recovering from or Preparing for a Natural Disaster

Hurricanes, wildfires, floods and other natural disasters occur all the time. Even worse, they seem to be getting more severe every year.  Not only are these disasters traumatic but also, in many cases, devastating. They damage homes and belongings and often destroy them completely.

Having access to a storage unit can help you prepare if you know a natural disaster is headed your way. They can also help you recover afterwards, as you sift through the items that were left behind. Below are some of the best benefits a storage unit provides when dealing with a natural disaster.

Benefits:

  1. Before a natural disaster strikes , you can store valuable, important items in a safe, climate controlled storage unit.
  2. After a disaster, you can keep undamaged belongings safe while you rebuild or restore your home.

Depending on where you live, a climate controlled self-storage unit can be a better choice. These specialized storage units keep the temperature and humidity stable throughout the year. For items that are fragile or easily damaged, a climate-controlled storage unit can be a huge help.

Changes in Family Life

Families come in all shapes and sizes, and sometimes the family structure can change. Happy occasions such as marriages or births can mean having twice as much stuff in one space. This can be difficult to manage, especially as you’re focused on the details of welcoming a new family member into the fold. Self-storage units can be helpful during these times as you figure out where all of your items will go.

A divorce or separation can also cause need for a storage unit. This can be an emotional and stressful time for all parties, and figuring out the logistics only adds to the strain. Moving out, dividing up belongings, and adjusting to new living arrangements is no walk in the park. Having a storage unit available can make this challenging transition a bit smoother. It gives you a place to keep personal items until any final decisions have been made. It’s also a “neutral” space, which can be very helpful during this challenging time.

Benefits:

  • A self-storage unit gives you a secure, personal space to store your belongings during the divorce or separation proceedings.
  • You can keep your personal items separate until all of your legal matters have been settled.
  • Having  a storage unit will reduce the stress of having to immediately find a permanent new home for all of your belongings.
  • Knowing that your things are safe, you can take your time searching for a new home or apartment.

Downsizing to a Smaller Home

Senior couple dancing happily in a kitchen.

Downsizing is something almost all folks go through at one point in their lives. Usually it’s due to retirement preparation, but downsizing can also reduce your bills and your daily chores and tasks.

Decluttering and downsizing can also be emotional as you go through items you’ve been given or gifted over the years. Having a self storage unit to store these items can make that process a bit easier to handle.

Benefits:

  • Extra space for items that won’t fit into your new, smaller home.
  • More time to sort through belongings without the constant pressure of having to move them right away.
  • A self storage unit can empower you to keep sentimental items safe for future generations.
  • Self storage offers a temporary solution for dealing with items that might be difficult to part with.

Let NSA Storage Help You Through Your Transition

Life transitions can often be overwhelming. Whether you’re dealing with the loss of one of a beloved family member, changes in family life, downsizing, or making a big move, a self storage unit can be extremely helpful. For many, summer is the best time of year thanks to the sunshine and warm weather. That warm weather is the best, as it allows you to wear your favorite clothing! Of course, once summer ends and the air turns chilly, you’ll need to figure out the best way of storing clothes from summer.

The challenge when storing summer clothing, however, is to ensure dust, dirt, moisture, and vermin don’t destroy them while stored. To help you do exactly that, the storage specialists at NSA Storage put together this informative, helpful article. If you’d like professional guidance to store your summer clothing correctly and keep everything pristine for next season, read on.

Why Storing Clothes Correctly is So Important

Let’s face it; clothing, especially high-quality clothing, can be quite expensive. Plus, many of us have a deep connection with our clothing because it allows us to express our unique selves. For those two main reasons, and several more, storing summer clothing correctly is important.

When you store your summer clothing the correct way, you ensure that insects, moisture, rodents and more don’t affect them. Not only will proper storage protect your clothes but it keeps them in excellent shape to use again next year. That’s why, if you truly value your summer clothing, storing them correctly is a must.

Easy, 5-Step Guide to Storing Summer Clothes Like a Pro

Below we’ve put together step-by-step instructions to store your summer clothes like a professional. If you follow these steps to the letter, your summer clothing will stay in pristine condition until next season.

1. First, Clean Your Summer Clothes Well

If you spilled something on your favorite blouse or pair of jeans, you’d likely clean it off right away. However, what most people forget is that body oils, sweat and dead skin can also negatively affect your summer clothing. If you don’t wash them off now, by next year, your clothing could be badly stained or even ruined.

That’s why, whether in your washing machine or the dry cleaners, cleaning your summer clothes well is crucial. A proper deep cleaning will get rid of any stuff that could ruin your clothing while stored for the winter.

2. Make Sure Your Summer Clothes are Bone Dry Before Storing Them

This next step might be even more important than cleaning your summer clothes. That because moisture can cause mold and mildew, which can both ruin many different fabrics. Even a small amount of moisture left on your clothing can create big problems during storage.

In short, make sure your summer clothes are bone dry before storing them. An extra few minutes in your dryer or, even better, hung out in the sun, is a great idea. It could mean the difference between pristine clothing next season or having to toss a lot of your precious wardrobe.

3. Store Your Summer Clothes in the Correct Containers

There’s a lot of debate about which containers are the “correct” containers when storing summer clothing. The fact is, large, plastic bins have as many attributes and drawbacks as cardboard boxes. For example, while plastic bins better protect against insects, they also keep in moisture that can cause mold and mildew. Cardboard boxes, on the other hand, allow your clothing to breathe but also allow vermin to easily get inside.

Professional packers use a combination of the two, including double-corrugated wardrobe cartons for hanging clothes. Considering there are no plastic alternatives to wardrobes, cardboard is really your only choice for hanging clothes. The same professionals recommend putting your folding clothing into plastic containers with lids that seal well. (See Step 5 for preventing damage to your clothes from insects and rodents.)

4. Don’t Overstuff Your Clothing Storage Containers

Yes, plastic containers and wardrobes can get expensive. That’s especially true if you have a large collection of summer clothing. For this reason, many people tend to stuff their containers as full as possible. Professionals, however, highly recommend against this practice.

The reason why is that clothing needs room to breathe, especially fabrics like silk, cotton, and wool. By packing too much into one container, you might end up defeating the purpose of that container. In other words, don’t stuff your storage containers like a squirrel stuffing its face in autumn. Leave a little room so that they can breathe.

5. Do Whatever You Can to Protect Your Summer Clothes from Insects and Rodents

Insects and rodents like mice and rats can quickly decimate your summer clothing collection. Keeping them away from your clothes is crucial to ensuring they stay in pristine condition. There are a few ways you can do this:

  • Use red cedar blocks or chips, which naturally repel insects, especially moths. Place a block in each box or bin. If you have chips, place 2 handfuls in a swatch of old stocking that’s tied on both ends.
  • Place sachets filled with lavender in your boxes. They smell great and do a fantastic job of keeping bugs away.
  • Bay leaves, commonly used in Italian cooking, are an excellent bug repellent. You can sprinkle a few in each clothing container you store.
  • Essential peppermint oil works well to prevent rodents. Put two or three drops on a cotton ball and place 3 or 4 of them in each clothing container.
  • Seal cardboard boxes with metal tape which creates a stronger barrier against rodents and insects.
  • Use an airtight bag sealing device to seal your clothing into bags. (Be sure they’re extremely dry and that the particular fabric can handle being compressed.)

Should You Choose a Climate-Controlled Storage Unit to Store Your Summer Clothes?

We’ve already mentioned that moisture can create mold and mildew which will damage your summer clothing. One of the best ways to prevent that is to choose a climate controlled storage unit to store your summer clothes.

These specialized storage units keep the temperature and humidity stable throughout the year. Professionals highly recommend climate controlled storage if you have a large collection of summer clothing to store. It’s one of the best ways to prevent damage from mold and mildew and keep your clothes dry and fresh.

Final Thoughts

As we’ve seen, keeping your summer clothes in pristine condition is an important consideration when storing them. If you’re like most folks, your clothing is a part of your identity, so keeping everything nice is genuinely important. To that end, we hope you found this guide useful and the information within actionable.

If you plan to store your summer clothing in a storage unit, NSA Storage can help. We have clean, secure and affordable storage units around the United States. We also offer climate controlled storage at the majority of our facilities.

They line the walls of basement bars and pubs, but do you ever wonder how to tell if a beer stein is valuable? We’re not talking about the ones adorned with your college football team logo—though they are a valuable reminder of your university days.

We’re talking about the big, lid-wearing beer steins seen at Oktoberfest celebrations.

“Stein” is a German word literally meaning stone but comes from the phrase, “Stein Krug” (stone mug). Steins come in a variety of materials, including ceramic, glass, wood, metal and crystal. And much like storage units, beer steins range in size—from 1 oz to over 8 gallons.

Nearly every stein seller markets their mugs as “vintage” or “authentic.” So how can you tell if your precious pint is worth more than pennies? Whether you’re a stein-collecting connoisseur or you picked up a pint at a thrift shop, here’s are some questions to ask yourself to tell if a beer stein is valuable.

Is it a German Beer Stein?

If it’s made in Germany, odds are your stein is special. Investigate the bottom of the glass. Look for “Made in Germany” or “Gemacht in Deutschland.” Obviously if it has a “Made in” mark but the country isn’t Germany, you don’t have an authentic German beer stein.

Is the Lid Lighter on the Inside?

Lids are one of the most important features when determining a beer stein’s value. Because it’s a soft metal, air exposure causes pewter to darken over time. If it’s dipped in a darkening agent and made to look old, the entire lid will be dark. However, if upon opening your stein, the inside of the lid is lighter than the outside, you may have a stein of significant value. Another lid lesson: Pewter, cone-shaped lids are typically the least valuable.

Is There a Bump on the Handle?

It wasn’t until the 1920s that manufacturers began adding bumps to beer stein handles. If your handle has bumps or grooves for your fingers, it was made recently, meaning it’s probably not worth much.

Is it Hand-Painted with an Interesting Design?

Examine your mug closely. Many reproduced steins appear to be hand-painted when they’re actually not. Look for imperfections, as well as a raised look on the design.

Certain illustrations are especially valuable, including scenes featuring:

  • Biblical figures
  • Battles
  • Historical milestones

What is the Beer Stein Made Out Of?

Though some reproduced steins feature these materials too, the most valuable vintage ones are made of silver, ivory or glass.

Beer steins have changed over time, but those variations are subtle. Look closely when examining yours. And consult a professional appraiser to see if your stein is valuable. Whether real or replica, fill your mug and cheers yourself to your new knowledge of beer steins!

After you’ve found out your beer stein is valuable, what next? For starters, you can store it in a temperature-controlled storage unit with SecurCare Self Storage. By offering a variety of self-storage units in several sizes, we also offer some of the most requested features like fenced perimeters and security cameras. We continually strive to satisfy all of our tenants’ storage needs. Chat with us today and store your valuables tomorrow.

Collecting vinyl records, a hobby that was extremely popular throughout most of the 20th century, has experienced a recent resurgence. Music enthusiasts and antique collectors alike are rediscovering the timeless appeal of these throwbacks to a different era of sound.

Not all records, however, are created equal. The majority are only worth a few dollars and are more valuable for their nostalgia factor. Some vinyl records, though, can fetch hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

It’s the top eight tips for identifying valuable records and keeping them in mint condition, brought to you by the storage specialists at NSA Storage. Read on to discover record collecting tips and create a collection that will be the envy of your vinyl-loving peers!

Top 8 Tips to Determine if a Vinyl Record is Valuable

Building a valuable record collection means knowing what makes one record more valuable than another. There are several factors that influence a record’s value, from the artists to rarity, condition, and several more. We’ve listed the best of them, below:

  1. Condition is Everything– Mint condition records are much more valuable than records with scratches, warps, or other defects. You should thoroughly inspect the vinyl’s surface for damage. Also, be sure to give the record’s sleeve a good look for signs of wear and tear such as scratches, creases, stains, rubs, or tears.
  2. Rare is Rare- While condition is everything, it’s less of a factor for extremely rare records. If you find something ultra-rare but it’s a bit beaten up, consider buying it anyway.
  3. Look for a First Pressing– First pressings are generally more valuable than later record reissues, or re-pressings. Research the matrix number etched into the record’s “dead wax” (the center of the album) to identify the pressing.
  4. Check if It’s a Limited Edition– Limited editions, like first pressings, are usually more valuable.
  5. Look for Foreign Pressings– Foreign pressings of an album can increase its value. The Beatles released several albums in England but not in the United States. For example, the Beatles “Rubber Soul” had 14 songs in the UK but only 12 on the US album. That makes the UK version more valuable, but makes the US version unique.
  6. Is (or was) the Artist Popular?– There’s no doubt that one of the biggest factors in terms of value is the popularity of the artist who made the record. Albums by iconic artists like The Beatles, Elvis, Aretha Franklin, Sinatra and others are generally more valuable than “one hit wonders”.
  7. Look for Autographs– Autographed albums, depending on the artist, can often be more valuable.
  8. Does the Record have any Distinctive Features– Misprints, special artwork, double albums and other distinctive features often make a record worth more money.

How To Keep Your Records in Pristine Condition

Never Stack Boxes of Vinyl Records on Top of Each Other

A mistake many record collectors make is stacking boxes of records on top of each other. Yes, it takes up less space, but stacking is very damaging to the records inside. Stacking can lead to the following, value-reducing issues:

  • Warping: The heavy weight of stacked records can cause the vinyl to bend and warp. That’s never good for records of any value.
  • Cover Damage: The weight can also damage album covers, leading to creases and splits. This, as you might’ve guessed, will also lower an album’s value.

Clean Your Albums Regularly

Records accumulate dust and dirt over time no matter if you play them often or not. All that dust and dirt can harm the album and ding its value. That’s why keeping your albums clean is critical. To do that easily and quickly, follow the cleaning tips below;

  • Use a clean, anti-static record cleaning brush to remove dust and grime each time you play an album.
  • A professional record cleaning machine is recommended if you have a large collection of record albums.
  • Don’t use water to clean your records. Water seeps into the grooves and can damage your albums. It’s best to use cleaning products specifically made for cleaning vinyl.

Catalog and Organize Your Collection

Keeping track of your valuable records can become challenging as your collection grows. Vinyl experts recommend cataloging and organizing your collection to ensure you know what you own and its condition. The tips below will help;

  • Use a digital app or spreadsheet to record each album’s title, artist, release date, condition, and value: Discogs, VinylWall, MusicBuddy, CLZ Music, etc.
  • Organize your records by genre, artist, or alphabetically. This helps maintain the quality of your records by reducing the need to shuffle through them all the time.
  • Consider keeping your most valuable vinyl separate from the rest of your collection to avoid accidental damage or loss.

Know When to Sell or Trade Your Vinyl Records

Building a vinyl record collection is exciting, no doubt. However, there may come a time when you decide to sell or trade your records. For example, if you’ve accumulated a lot and need to free up space, or you just want a little cash for your collection. Here are some signs it may be time to sell some of your records:

  • If a record has significantly increased in value, it might be a good time to sell it.
  • If you have multiple copies of an album, selling the extra copies can fund the purchase of new ones.
  • Pay attention to trends in the record market. If an album is suddenly in high demand, it might be the perfect time to sell.

When selling your valuable records, research prices thoroughly to ensure you get a fair deal. Sites like Discogs and VinylBuddy can provide valuable insight into current market prices.

How to Store Your Vinyl Records Correctly to Maintain Their Value

Now you know how to identify a valuable record in your collection, and how to keep them in pristine condition. The next step is to preserve your collection’s value when it’s stored. The tips below will help you keep your records in pristine condition while they’re stored.

  • Always Store Your Records Vertically: Always store your records like books on a shelf, to distribute their weight evenly. Storing records flat can lead to warping, which can permanently damage your record and destroy its value.
  • Use the Right Sleeves for Extra Protection: Protect both the vinyl and the record’s cover by using plastic outer sleeves and anti-static inner sleeves. These sleeves protect your records from dust, dirt, grime, gunk, and fingerprints.
  • Keep Records Away from Direct Sunlight: Direct sunlight can cause the record cover to fade, which will lower its value. Always be sure to store your records in a cool, dark-ish place.
  • Handle Your Records with Care: Always handle your records by the edges and avoid touching the playing surface. Oils from your skin can leave marks and attract dirt. Some serious record collectors only touch their records when they’re wearing clean, white gloves!
  • Store Your Records in a Climate-Controlled Storage Unit: If you’re storing your records in a storage unit, we recommend a climate-controlled storage unit. These specialized units keep the temperature stable throughout the year. That means your records will never be exposed to extreme heat or cold.
