Spring is a time of renewal, when the flowers bloom, the birds sing, and the weather turns warmer. Not surprisingly, it’s also a time when many folks refresh their homes, and that includes their decorations. Winter decor is stored while new ones are taken out of storage. If you’re into DIY projects and want to update your home’s look for spring, try some of these easy-to-make DIY spring decorations for you and your kids, brought to you by NSA Storage.

The Beauty of Crafting DIY Decorations for Spring

If you’re into decorating your home and DIY projects, crafting DIY spring decorations will be a perfect fit. That’s because they’re fun to make, look great, and make excellent conversation starters.

Here are a few more reasons to make your own spring decor:

  • DIY decorations are typically less expensive to make than purchasing new ones
  • Your entire family can get involved in the project(s)
  • Crafting decorations makes for a fantastic weekend activity
  • You can customize your decorations to match your personal colors and style

One final reason to make your own decorations is that, if you love them, you can store them and reuse them. That goes for the materials and tools to make more next year, also!

DIY Spring Decorations Perfect for Adults

These DIY projects are geared more towards adults. They’re relatively easy, low-cost, and look beautiful when finished. They’re also nice enough to look store-bought.

Decorative Lanterns

Using faux flowers, a string of mini lights, and mason jars you can make a beautiful, lighted display. Simply place the lights in the jar and then place the flowers inside.

  • These can be used indoors or outdoors
  • You can reuse them for other seasons and holidays with some slight changes
  • Use different-sized jars for a bigger visual impact

Mini lights that can be programmed to change colors or lighting patterns are a great choice for this project.

Botanical Wall Art

Using cheap frames from Goodwill or garage sales, you can display beautiful pressed flowers on your walls! (Just FYI, this project takes a little longer as you need to press your flowers first.)

  • Use your favorite flowers
  • You can use faux flowers, also
  • Mix sizes, flowers, and frames for a dramatic display

The finished frames look amazing and, even better, can be easily swapped. Plus, several can be stored together in a single box.

Spring Wreath for Your Front Door

Wreaths aren’t just for the holidays anymore but can be enjoyed year-round. You can DIY a wreath with basic materials using either fresh flowers or greenery.

Hand making a floral spring wreath.
  • You’ll need a foam or metal base from your local crafting store.
  • Use flowers like eucalyptus, tulips, or greenery stems.
  • Lay out your design before starting
  • Attach everything with hot glue or floral wire
  • Adding a bow is optional

Want to keep your wreath for next year? If yes, be sure to store it lying flat with nothing on top to crush it.

DIY Spring Decorations Ideal for Kids

Depending on the age of your children, these decorations will be fun to make and very colorful. Even better, they don’t have to be perfect, giving each one its own, unique look.

Garlands of Paper Flowers

Some colorful construction paper can be turned into a wonderful garland your kids will be proud to display! It’s easy and fun, but be sure to give them kid-friendly scissors.

  • Grab construction paper, string, glue, and scissors
  • Cut out flower shapes
  • Glue the flowers onto the string
  • Hang in front of windows, on a wall, or over the mantel

You can use a hot glue gun for these, also, if your kids are old enough to use it safely. Also, use push pins to hang them easily and quickly.

Egg Carton Flowers

This DIY decoration is great for smaller kids, although they might need help cutting with scissors.

  • You’ll need cardboard egg cartons, paint, sticks, and glue
  • Cut out the individual egg cups
  • Paint them in bright colors and paint the sticks green
  • Glue them onto the sticks and display in a small vase

For some kids, painting the egg carton before cutting them apart might be easier. Also, you can use straws instead of sticks.

Butterfly Hand Art

This is a classic decoration that you might remember from when you were a kid. It’s easy as pie and the results will make everyone in the family smile.

  • Kid-safe paint is needed, as well as construction paper
  • Paint your child’s palm and fingers (just on one side!)
  • Press both hands down flat, next to each other, to form the “butterfly’s” wings
  • Cut out a long, oval shape (the “body”) with extra construction paper
  • Glue the wings to the body, and glue 2 pipe cleaners for “antennae”

Should You Store Your DIY Spring Decorations in a Storage Unit?

If you like to decorate your home for every season, you might have a lot of decorations and not a lot of space to store them. A self-storage unit might be a solution so that you can easily rotate your decorations throughout the year. Some other benefits include:

  • A storage unit provides safe, secure storage for almost anything
  • You can rent a self-storage unit short or long-term, it’s your choice
  • You’ll have more storage at home, but know your other stuff is safe and sound until you need it again

If a storage unit sounds like the best choice for you and your family, count on NSA Storage. You can reserve one of our storage units online in minutes. Use them as you see fit, and organize all your decorations and other household items any way you like!

If you long for a home refresh but don’t want to make a big financial investment, a hardware swap might be just what you’re looking for. A hardware swap means updating the hardware in your home’s kitchen, bathrooms, and other areas, including knobs, handles, hooks, etc. This DIY hardware swap guide, brought to you by NSA Storage, will help you pick the right hardware to give your home a fresh look for spring!

What’s So Great about a Spring Hardware Swap?

Replacing the hardware in your home might not sound like much, but the difference it can make is surprising. Compared to a full remodel, a hardware swap is an affordable way to make a noticeable, attractive difference in your home.

Some of the best reasons to do a hardware swap in spring include:

  • It’s a low-cost but high-impact DIY home refresh project.
  • Most folks can finish a hardware swap in a day or a leisurely weekend.
  • No demolition, major tools, painting, or expensive contractors are needed.

What Common Hardware Types Can You Swap?

In home improvement, hardware can refer to a lot of things, but in this case it refers to the functional or decorative metal fixtures in kitchens, bathrooms, and entryways.

Here’s the hardware you can swap throughout your home:

  • Cabinet knobs or pulls
  • Drawer knobs or pulls
  • Cabinet and door hinges
  • Towel bars and rings
  • TP holders
  • Faucets
  • Showerheads
  • Shower curtain rods and hooks
  • Vanity knobs and pulls
  • Door knobs
  • Laundry and entryway hooks

Choosing the Right Hardware

Different colored drawers with different colors and styles of hardware.

Before starting your DIY hardware swapping project, you’ll want to choose your new hardware. There are a few things to consider when making your choice: finish, size, and compatibility.

Let’s take a look at all three:

Finish / Aesthetics

The finish on your new hardware can be anything you like. Your choices might be limited by the style of home you already have, or the one you’d like to copy.

  • Matte Black is best for modern, farmhouse, or industrial-style homes.
  • Brushed Nickel is versatile, hides wear, and fits both traditional and modern homes.
  • Chrome is bright, clean, and goes well with traditional homes.
  • Brass / Gold Tones will give your home a warm, vintage, upscale look.
  • Oil-rubbed Bronze is a good choice for rustic homes as well as traditional.

Size / Proportion

Size and proportion refer to the traditional sizes of most home hardware and what they work best with.

Here are a few facts about size and proportion to help you choose correctly:

  • Knobs work best on small cabinets with small doors.
  • Cabinet pulls are usually 3 to 6 inches long and look best on larger doors.
  • Longer pulls are the preferred choice for oversize drawers.
  • Bathroom towel bars are typically 18 to 24 inches long.

Installation Compatibility

Installation compatibility is an important factor to keep in mind during your swap, for several reasons.

Here are a few real-world examples to help explain:

  • If new hardware isn’t compatible, old holes might be visible, off center, or too small / large.
  • Some hardware like towel bars use drywall anchors. Taking out the old hardware might leave you with a repair job when installing the new.
  • Hardware is often mounted to a stud, which is the best scenario for removal and installation.

How to Avoid the Biggest DIY Hardware Swap Mistakes

Swapping hardware is a fairly easy project, but there are a few things that can go wrong and make the project more difficult or time-consuming.

Here are a few things to watch out for when removing / installing your new hardware.

  • Don’t overtighten screws. This can crack your new hardware or damage other surfaces.
  • Be sure to use a level and check frequently, especially with towel bars.
  • Be sure new hardware has the same hole spacing as the old.
  • When possible, install towel bar holders into studs for maximum strength.

Last but not least: don’t throw your old hardware away too quickly. You never know when you might want to use it again. Plus, if you rent, your landlord might want you to switch things back to the way they were. That could cost you a pretty penny.

Let NSA Storage Help with Your Spring Projects

As we’ve seen, a DIY hardware swap involves mostly small hardware like knobs, pulls, towel bars, etc. But if your hardware swap is part of a larger project, like renovating a kitchen or bathroom, a storage unit might be a great choice for you. Here’s why:

  • You can store new appliances, cabinets, flooring, etc., while the renovations are ongoing.
  • Storing your nice furniture and valuable belongings in a storage unit will keep them safe and clean.
  • If you’re selling, you can use the storage unit while you “stage” your home.
  • If you’re a seasonal swapper, you can store things you don’t need until next year.

If renting a storage unit would be helpful to your situation, NSA Storage is here for you! You can reserve a storage unit online, and it will be ready when you arrive. With month-to-month leases, you can rent for as short or long as you need. Your spring renovations are in the right hands with NSA Storage.

If you’re looking for a kitchen upgrade that’s both low-cost and high-impact, look no further than a backsplash. A backsplash is installed on kitchen walls under the cabinets and behind the sink and stove to add a layer of protection and a pop of texture and color. If you’re ready to tackle this project yourself, follow this NSA Storage guide to get you started on your DIY kitchen backsplash.

Why Installing a DIY Backsplash is a Good Idea

Many kitchens lack backsplashes, increasing the risk that their walls will be damaged by water, heat, grease, and flames. Also, installing a backsplash is an excellent opportunity to show off your unique taste and style. The right DIY backsplash can turn a lackluster kitchen into one that impresses.

Backsplashes deliver personality, flair, and wall protection at a much lower cost than a full kitchen remodel. Your kitchen will look new and different, but your budget won’t get battered in the process. Even better, backsplashes have a very high ROI (Return On Investment) when selling your home!

What Does It Cost to DIY a Backsplash?

A close-up of kitchen backsplash.

As with most home improvement projects, you can find backsplashes in different materials, styles, and price ranges. For example, peel-and-stick backsplashes are relatively affordable. Tile backsplashes, on the other hand, can get pricey depending on the material.

Below is a simple breakdown of the cost to DIY a kitchen backsplash, based on an average area of 15 to 30 square feet.

Tile Backsplash:

  • Tile: $5 to $25 per square foot
  • Mortar, grout, spacers, and sealer: $1 to $3 per square foot
  • Tools (if you don’t already own them): $50 to $200
  • Average cost: Between $300 to $800+

Peel-and-Stick Backsplash:

  • Peel-and-stick tiles: $4–$12 per square foot
  • Minimal extra supplies (razor knife, level): $10–$25
  • Average cost: $100 to $300

How Much Time, Effort, and Skills are Needed to Install a Backsplash?

Before installing a DIY kitchen backsplash, it helps to know how much time, effort, and experience you’ll need. That way, you can choose the backsplash that matches your vision and skill level.

Below we break down all three to give you a clear idea:

DIY Backsplash Time Investment

Traditional Tile Backsplash:

  • Prep: 1- 2 hours
  • Tile installation: 4 – 8 hours
  • Drying time before applying grout: 24 hours
  • Grouting: 2 – 3 hours
  • Cleanup: 1 – 2 hours
  • Total project time: 2 – 3 days

Peel-and-Stick Backsplash:

  • Prep: 30 – 60 minutes
  • Installation: 1 – 2 hours
  • Drying time: None
  • Cleanup: 30 minutes
  • Total project time: Under 4 hours

DIY Backsplash Skill and Effort Investment

Traditional Tile Backsplash:

  • Requires measuring, cutting, leveling, spacing, and grouting
  • Physical effort: Moderate to high
  • Skill level: Intermediate

Peel-and-Stick Backsplash:

  • Requires measuring, peeling, and pressing into place
  • Physical effort: Low
  • Skill level: Beginner

It’s worth noting that mistakes with DIY tile backsplashes are harder to fix once the mortar sets. With peel-and-stick, however, mistakes can usually be corrected easily and quickly.

Traditional Backsplash Vs. Peel-and-Stick

Knowing the final results of your DIY backsplash project is helpful when making your final choice. For example, if you’re renting, you might not want to invest in upgrades that will last beyond your move-out. If you own, however, tile might be a better choice.

Traditional Tile Backsplash:

  • Lasts for 15 to 30 years or longer
  • Is highly resistant to heat, water, grease, and more
  • The tile grout needs occasional cleaning and possible re-sealing
  • More or less permanent
  • Increases your home’s value

Peel-and-Stick Backsplash:

  • Last for 3 to 5 years
  • Not as resistant to heat
  • Not as durable
  • Easy to remove and replace
  • Needs very little maintenance
  • Looks nice but doesn’t increase value

Should You Choose Traditional Backsplash or Peel-and-Stick?

A white kitchen with gray backsplash.

Now that you’ve seen the main differences between tile and peel-and-stick backsplashes, which is best for you? Your final choice will be affected by several factors, including whether you own or rent and the time and money you’re willing to invest.

A Traditional Tile Backsplash is Best If:

  • You own your home
  • You want something durable and permanent
  • You’re interested in increasing your home’s value
  • You have the tools already
  • You’re confident in your DIY skills

A Peel-and-Stick Backsplash is Best If:

  • You’re a renter
  • You don’t want to invest a lot of time or money into the project
  • You want something that’s easy to remove or replace
  • You don’t have the needed tools
  • You don’t have a lot of DIY experience

Should You Rent a Storage Unit for Your Kitchen Renovations?

If your backsplash project is part of a bigger kitchen renovation, you might need more space until the project is finished. A self-storage unit is a great solution for these reasons:

  • You can store valuables and fragile items to protect them from theft or damage.
  • Supplies, materials, and new appliances can be safely stored until they’re needed.
  • You’ll be able to free up space to complete the project without extra stuff getting in your way.

If renting a self-storage unit sounds like a smart choice, NSA Storage can help. Our safe, clean, and secure storage facilities offer storage units in several different sizes to fit your needs perfectly. You can also reserve a storage unit online, and it will be ready to store your stuff safely when you arrive. We’re here to help you with all of your DIY and home renovation projects!

Working out regularly is one of the best things you can do for your physical and mental health. Millions of people make the resolution every new year to get in shape, but they’re often discouraged by a few obstacles. A gym membership can be expensive, and finding the motivation to drive to the gym adds an extra layer of difficulty. A home gym is the solution! With a home gym, you can work out when you want and save time, money, and frustration. If you’re looking to DIY your home gym and need some tips to get started, NSA Storage is here to help.

Where Should I Set Up My Home Gym?

You might think you don’t have the space to set up a home gym, but you might just need to do some organizing and rearranging. Some of the best home spaces for home gyms are:

  • A spare bedroom- If you’ve got a spare bedroom, you have the perfect workout room. It’s convenient, quiet, private, and the temperature is easy to control. Move the bed out of the way and put it back when company comes over.
  • A garage- Garages are great because they’re usually pretty big and have a concrete floor. That makes them a great spot to place heavy workout equipment without fear of damaging your house. You can also open the door to enjoy fresh air and sunshine when the weather’s nice.
  • A basement- Although not always perfect due to humidity issues, a basement can make a good home gym. They’re usually quite large, very private, and stay cool even during summer heatwaves. Add a dehumidifier if needed.
  • The dining room- For many, dining rooms are only used when guests are over. If that sounds like you, simply move your dining table to the side (or to a storage area) and use it for a workout space.
  • An enclosed porch- Enclosed porches are great for people who have warm to mild weather year-round. Porches provide good airflow and a sunny environment to work out in.

Essential Workout Equipment for a Home Gym

The equipment you get for your home gym depends on your fitness goals, your age, and several other factors. Keep in mind that you do not need to get everything all at once. In fact, spreading out your workout equipment purchases will be easier on your budget.

Essential Home Gym Equipment:

  • An exercise mat
  • An adjustable, multi-use workout bench
  • Resistance bands
  • A medicine ball
  • Free weights

With just these few items, you can do strength-training, weightlifting, HIIT exercises, or yoga. This is a great place to start if you’re at the beginning of your fitness journey.

A man on his back on a weight bench, lifting dumbbells overhead.

Strength Training Equipment:

  • Kettlebells
  • A barbell with various weight plates
  • A pull-up bar
  • A squat rack

If you’re looking to tone or grow specific muscle groups, you might want to invest in more weight-lifting equipment. When using these in your home, make sure to take precautions to protect your floors and walls from damage.

Cardio Workout Equipment:

  • Stationary bike
  • Treadmill
  • Rowing machine
  • Elliptical trainer
  • Ski trainer
  • Stair stepper
  • Jump rope
  • Heavy bag

Jogging is great for cardio, but the weather doesn’t always cooperate. This equipment will elevate your heart rate and get your cardiovascular system in shape! If you’re not ready to commit to a treadmill or spin bike, a jump rope is a great place to start.

Best Accessories to Improve Safety

Whenever you’re exercising, safety is important. When you’re at home alone, it’s even more crucial to plan ahead. After all, weights are heavy, floors are hard, and accidents happen. To stay safe while you work out, use these safety accessories:

  • Rubber floor mats if the floor is concrete
  • Fans to keep cool during hot weather
  • Heaters to stay warm during cold weather
  • Dumbbell stands
  • Weight plate “trees”
  • Adequate lighting
  • Wall hooks for bands, jumpropes, etc.
  • Tape to tape down chords
  • Drink water throughout every workout

When lifting weights, it’s always a good idea to have a spotter to help you bail out if necessary.

Best Accessories for Comfort and Form

Working out is great for your health, but you also want to keep your spirit in mind when exercising. Being able to check your form and perform exercises correctly is equally important. To keep an eye on both, consider these accessories for your home gym:

Home gym equipment like a yoga mat, foam roller, dumbbell, and medicine ball.
  • A bluetooth speaker for music while you work out
  • At least one large mirror, either wall mounted or free standing
  • A progress or goal board to track your progress and keep your stats
  • Plants; they reduce stress, improve mood, and make the space feel intentional
  • A timer or clock
  • Recovery equipment like foam rollers, therapy cushions, ice packs, etc.

Use a Self-Storage Unit to Free Up Space for a Home Gym

If you want a home gym but don’t have that space, a self-storage unit can be the perfect solution. Just clean out your spare room, garage, or porch and store the extra stuff in a storage unit until you need it and use that space to meet your goals this year. NSA Storage is here to help our customers make space for what matters in their home. You can reserve a storage unit online in minutes and it will be ready immediately.

Every Thanksgiving host wants their tablescape to impress. A beautiful and festive centerpiece is a great way to spruce up the spread, and the best part is, you can make one yourself to save on the cost of an extravagant centerpiece.

If you’re wanting to create a magical DIY Thanksgiving centerpiece this year, this blog is for you. It’s brought to you by NSA Storage, and filled with tips on setting a memorable table! Follow along and make your Thanksgiving masterpiece with these easy how-to guides.

Natural and Rustic Thanksgiving Centerpieces

If an all-natural centerpiece is what you want, the ideas below will be perfect. They bring the colors of the season indoors, as well as the textures and scents.

  • Table Runner Made from Colorful Autumn Leaves

This table runner is easy to make and costs almost nothing except a little bit of your time. Gather colorful leaves and spray them with shellac to keep them in good shape. Then, glue them together, end-to-end, making sure to twist and turn them. Use as many leaves as you need to go from one end of the table to the other.

  • Pinecone Candle Centerpiece

Pinecones are abundant in fall so grab a few of them for this easy, attractive centerpiece. Then, spread them around a tall pillar candle (or several), and you’re done! If you like, you can spray paint some of the pinecones different fall colors, or leave them natural.

  • Mini Pumpkin Bowl Centerpiece

Using an extra-large bowl, fill it with mini pumpkins and gourds. Mound them in the bowl and, voila, you’re done! Super easy, this centerpiece is also strikingly attractive.

  • Mason Jar Wheat Bundles

Using mason jars, stuff them with dried wheat stalks that have been bundled together. Three or four of these quick, inexpensive jars and you’ll have a centerpiece that looks amazing!

DIY Thanksgiving Centerpieces Using Everyday Items around the House

Like the rustic, all-natural centerpieces above, these use everyday items to help you save money. Most of the supplies you’ll need are probably already in your home!

  • Mini Chalkboard Place Holders

Everyone wants to know where they’re sitting at the big table on Thanksgiving. Using mini chalkboards, you can make place holders to show them! Plus, if you have kids (or want to be artsy) you can color them with fall designs.

  • Corn-filled Candle Vase

Using a vase, fill it ⅔ full with dried kernels of corn. Then, gently stick a tall candle in the center. In less than five minutes you’ll have DIY Thanksgiving centerpieces that look beautiful!

  • Multi-colored Mason Jars

For this centerpiece you’ll need mason jars, several colors of paint, and tea lights. Once gathered, paint the mason jars in festive fall colors. When dried, stick in your tea lights! Done!

  • Thanksgiving-themed Cake Stand Centerpiece

If you have a cake stand you can use it to build an awesome Turkey Day centerpiece! Just layer mini-pumpkins, leaves, pinecones, and maybe some dried apples and pears. In minutes you’ll have a colorful, rustic display your guests will love!

DIY Thanksgiving Centerpieces that the Kids Can Make

If you have kids and want to get them involved, these centerpieces will do the trick. They’re easy to make and, when finished, will give your child a sense of joy and pride.

  • Pinecone Turkeys

Adorable and fun to make, pinecone turkeys are also a lot of fun to look at and play with! You’ll need;

  • Pinecones of varying sizes
  • Googly eyes
  • Paper to make “feathers” and “beaks”
  • Pipe cleaners for “feet”
  • Kid-safe glue

Once gathered, let your kids go to town, glueing everything in place to make their turkeys.

  • Handprint Turkey Jars

Spread water-based paint on a safe surface, and let your kids put their hand down into it. Then, let them grab a jar to leave a “turkey” print on the side. Once dry, put in tea lights for a fun, festive display.

  • Gratitude Mini Pumpkins
A pumpkin with words written on it, representing what people are thankful for.

Let your kids write the things they are grateful for onto mini pumpkins and place them around the table. It’s easy and also gives your kids a good lesson in gratitude.

How to Store Your DIY Thanksgiving Centerpieces

Many centerpieces get thrown away for donated after the holiday is over. After all, some are made from natural components that will eventually fall apart or rot. But, if you want to save a few for next year, here are a few tips that will help:

  • Use clear, plastic bins so that you can see what’s inside.
  • Wrap fragile items in packing paper.
  • Place natural items in bags you can seal to keep out pests.
  • Store everything in a place that’s cool, dry, and away from the sun.

Store Your Centerpieces with NSA Storage

Hopefully the ideas above have given you plenty of inspiration for decoration! As promised, they’re easy, inexpensive, and should look amazing on your Thanksgiving table!

If you need extra storage for the holidays, whether to make room for guests, to store decorations, or more, NSA Storage can help. Our clean, safe storage units are available nationwide, ready to store practically anything.

Hands pinning leaves to a strand of twine with clothespins.
  • A bunch of colorful leaves
  • A few lengths of string
  • Small clothespins
  • Some push pins

Gather the leaves and, using the clothespins, attach them to a string. Then use the push pins to place your fall garland on a wall, over a door, or wherever you like. Not only are they pretty but, within minutes, your kids will have a decoration they can be proud of.

2. Pinecone Owls

Pinecones are a natural decorative item that can be made into a variety of DIY crafts. They’re also free and, unless you live in the city, easy to find. For these adorable pinecone owls you’ll need:

  • Several pinecones of different sizes
  • “Googly eyes” which you can find online or at a craft store like Michael’s
  • Felt sheets in whatever color your child likes
  • Glue (or a glue gun)

First, clean the pinecone if needed. Next, cut small “wings” from the colored felt and glue them in place. Lastly, glue the googly eyes in place. Done! You now have an owl, or a family of them, to place on a shelf, windowsill, or mantel.

3. Pumpkin Painting

Carving pumpkins is fun but not recommended for smaller children due to sharp edges. Instead, paint those pumpkins! You’ll need:

  • Several small pumpkins or gourds
  • Washable, water-based paint
  • Some paint brushes
  • Newspaper or an old sheet to protect any surfaces

Once you’ve got everything, tell your kids to let their imagination run free. Funny faces, cool designs, whatever they want! Plus, if they’re not happy with the result, they can wash off the paint and start again.

4. Leaf Rubbings

Children have been making fall leaf rubbings for ages! They’re fun, easy, and can be done in many different colors! Here’s how:

  • Take a large, intact leaf and place it under a plain, white sheet of paper.
  • Using any crayon color, rub it over the leaf gently to bring out the leaf’s veins.
  • Cut out the colored “leaves” and use them to make a wreath, garland, or other decorations.

5. Fall Lanterns

This DIY fall craft is one of two that needs a couple of store-bought items. The resulting lanterns, however, are simply beautiful and can be used throughout the year. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Several mason jars with lids
  • A battery operated string of lights or “tea” light
  • Leaves
  • Glue

To start, glue a few leaves to the front of the mason jar, making sure that it will still stand up when done. Next, pop in the string lights or tea light and put the lid back on. That’s it! You now have an attractive lantern that will create a beautiful glow all season long!

6. Fall Harvest Log

This is a fall take on a traditional Christmas decoration. It’s a bit more complicated than the first five, with some steps that should definitely be handled by an adult. You’ll need:

A festive candle holder made from a log.
  • A medium size log. Birch is preferred for its beautiful white bark.
  • Two or three taper, pillar, or dinner candles
  • Small pinecones, dried berries, acorns, and leaves
  • Some twine or a small amount of burlap
  • A drill with a drill bit sized to your candle’s base

First, find which side of the log sits flat the best. Then, on top, drill equidistant holes for the two or three candles you’ve purchased. Next, glue your decorations, including leaves, berries, acorns, etc. Attach your burlap or twine and place the candles in their holes and you’re done!

You can use your harvest log as a centerpiece, or place it on your mantel. Burn the candles with caution and enjoy the warm glow of your DIY crafting!

How To Store Seasonal Crafts for the Following Season

If you want to keep your DIY creations in good shape for next year, follow these tips:

  • Wrap them in plain, white packing paper.
  • Place them in clear, plastic bins to see what’s inside.
  • Store them in a clean, dry, dark space. (The basement is not a good choice as most are too damp.)
  • If you have a lot of seasonal things to store but not enough space at home, consider renting a self storage unit.

Store this Fall with NSA Storage

Halloween is one of the most fun and exciting holidays of the year. After all, who doesn’t like trick-or-treating, candy, and spooky stories? Of course, Halloween is all about the costumes, especially for kids but, in many cases, adults also. Which brings us to the subject of today’s article: Easy DIY Costumes for Adults and Children. If you’re in need of a quick, easy, and affordable way to haunt this year, NSA Storage has the info you need, below. It’s a list of seven DIY Halloween costumes you can make at home!

What Makes DIY Halloween Costumes Better than Store Bought?

There’s truly something special about creating your own Halloween costume. You can watch it come to life, so to speak, and make any changes, upgrades, and tweaks you like. For some, the process is as much fun as the actual trick-or-treating!

Another reason is that, in most cases, you can save quite a bit of money making your own costume. Oftentimes it can be made with materials you already have at home, cutting down on your overall costs. Lastly, making your costume with friends and family is a great way to enjoy some time together during this special holiday!

1. Chef

You can see chefs all over TV these days, including Gordon Ramsey and many others. A chef’s costume is simple using a:

  • White, button-down shirt
  • Apron
  • Large kitchen spoon, spatula, or other utensil
  • Large piece of white craft paper to make a chef’s hat

Even better, bring a mixing bowl instead of a bag or sack to store your Halloween candy!

2. Mummy

A man in a DIY mummy costume.

This classic Halloween costume is easy to make and is always recognizable. All you’ll need is two items:

  • White gauze from your local pharmacy
  • Tape

With white or light colored clothing underneath, wrap your head, arms, and lower legs in the gauze. Make sure to leaves gaps for your eyes, nose, and mouth so you can see and breathe. Use tape to secure the gauze. This costume is great because it doesn’t have to be perfect; in fact, the more haphazard your wrap-job is, the better! Leave some of the ends loose or sticking out to achieve that ancient mummy look.

3. Artist

If you or your child loves to draw or paint, this artist costume will be perfect! Like the rest, it’s easy to DIY, also, once you have:

  • An oversized shirt as a “smock”
  • A black or brown beret made from cardboard. (See below)
  • A “palette”
  • A large paint brush

Using a piece of cardboard from a clean box, cut out the “palette”, including finger holes to hold it. Then, paint on some “paint” in different colors. Done!

4. Garden Gnome

Garden gnomes have been a staple of American yards for decades. There are even several movies about them! Turning yourself or your child into one is easy and fun with the right materials, including:

  • A cone hat
  • Fake beard
  • Blue t-shirt
  • Large belt
  • Red pants

You can make the cone hat using a large piece of construction paper. Make the beard using white construction paper with cotton balls glued on and some string to keep it in place. Throw on the pants, shirt, and belt and your gnome will be ready to roam!

5. Bubble Bath

This DIY Halloween costume is a hoot! It’s easy and fun, and will get plenty of looks. Here’s what you’ll need to make it:

  • Several white balloons
  • A shower cap
  • Rubber ducky
  • String
  • Tape

Buy or rent a small helium tank to blow up the balloons or get them from your local store or florist. Then, tie strings to them and attach the balloons to yourself or your child at various levels. Tape a few on with tape, also. Put on the shower cap and grab the rubber ducky and they’re ready for a bubbly and clean Halloween!

6. Superhero

With a simple cape made from a colorful towel and a paper mask, anyone can be a superhero! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Towel or piece of fabric for the cape
  • Felt or heavy paper for the mask
A young boy in a DIY superhero costume.

If you have the time and extra cash, a t-shirt with a superhero’s emblem would be a fantastic finishing touch. Or take a plain t-shirt and make your own!

7. LEGO Brick

LEGO bricks are possibly the most famous toy in the world. Becoming a LEGO brick for Halloween is easy with a large, rectangular box. You’ll need:

  • A rectangular box that is big enough for you or your child to fit inside
  • Paint
  • Extra cardboard for the LEGO “studs”

Cut out a hole for you or your child’s head and both arms. Next, paint the “brick” in whatever bright color you like. Next, cut out cardboard circles for the “studs”(a LEGO 1×4 brick has 6 of them). Place the 6 studs equidistant apart and you’ve got yourself a LEGO brick costume!

Organizing and Storing Your DIY Halloween Costumes

After the fun has ended and the costumes are no longer needed, storing them correctly is a good idea. Most folks can do that at home but, if you have several, or a lot of Halloween decorations, you might want to rent a storage unit. Whatever you do, be sure to:

  • Wash each costume well to prevent stains and keep pests away.
  • Use clear, plastic bins to store parts and accessories.
  • If you have a bunch of boxes and bins, consider using a shelving unit (or several of them) to keep your storage unit well organized.

Store Your Halloween Costumes and Decorations with NSA Storage

Use these ideas to make your next DIY Halloween costume one of the best ever! They’re easy, fun, and will get all sorts of attention on the spookiest night of the year. Even better, they won’t break your budget.

If you need extra space to store everything after the holiday, NSA Storage can help. Reserve a storage unit online for safe, secure storage that will keep your Halloween stuff in pristine condition until next year! Happy Halloween!

If you’re like many homeowners, there’s one thing you always seem to run out of in your home: storage space. You need at-home storage solutions that don’t break the bank. Well, you’re in luck! This is a step-by-step guide to DIY floating shelves that you can put almost anywhere to increase your home’s storage space.

Floating shelves use vertical space that typically goes unused. They also add charm to your home, and can be made with simple tools and materials!

If that sounds like the DIY project your home needs, read on to get started today! It’s all brought to you by the storage specialists at NSA Storage.

Why are Floating Shelves a Good Choice?

You might be wondering why floating shelves are a good choice for creating extra storage in your home. There are several excellent reasons including:

  • Floating shelves take up zero space on your floors
  • Floating shelves draw the eye up and make any room feel “bigger”
  • You can install floating shelves almost anywhere
  • Floating shelves hold all sorts of things including books, dishes, tools, tchotchkes, small containers, etc.
  • Floating shelves add a sleek and modern look

What You Need for DIY Floating Shelves

A smiling woman wearing safety goggles and holding an electric drill.

Before you begin crafting your floating shelves, it’s best to gather all of your tools, materials and supplies. They include:

  • 2×4 (or 1×2) wood slats for the shelf frame
  • Half-inch plywood for the shelf’s surface
  • 2-inch or 3-inch wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Wood clamps
  • Wall anchors (if no studs are usable)
  • Sandpaper or a sanding block
  • An electric drill or nail gun
  • A saw (hand or power) with small, fine teeth
  • Wood stain, paint, and a clear coat finish (optional)

It would also be helpful to have a workbench available so that you don’t have to work on the floor. Two sawhorses with a piece of plywood as the top also works well.

Step-By-Step Guide

Step 1: Choose the Location for Your DIY Floating Shelf

First, pick the wall where you want to hang your floating shelf. Good places for DIY floating shelves include:

  • Above a desk
  • Over the toilet in your bathroom
  • Inside one or more closets
  • In your garage or shed
  • In your kitchen

Remember, the point of floating shelves is that they can use vertical space. This is wall space that, typically, goes unused and is wasted. Also, you can go as high up as you like, especially in your garage, basement, or attic. That way, you get the benefit of all that open, unused space!

Pro Tip: Use a stud finder to find the studs in the wall. Screwing into studs ensures that your shelves will not fall down. Mark the stud locations with a pencil to ensure you get the location correct.

Step 2: Measure and Mark Your Shelf Pieces

Decide how long you want your floating shelf to be. Most are 24” to 36” long. Once you’ve chosen the length:

  • Use a measuring tape to mark the wall.
  • Use a level to make sure your marks are straight.
  • Mark both the top and bottom edges of the shelf.

This step will help guide your frame installation. Don’t skip it, as you might end up with a shelf that’s not level and looks unattractive.

Step 3: Cut the Frame and Shelf Boards

Now it’s time to cut the wood for your floating shelf. Remember to work safely and wear safety goggles and ear protection.

  1. Cut two pieces of wood the full length of your shelf.
  2. Cut two to three shorter pieces (about 6–8 inches) to go inside the frame for support.
  3. Cut a top board from plywood or pine to match the frame size.
A man wearing work gloves sawing a piece of plywood.

Use a saw with smaller teeth for smooth, even cuts. Once cut, sand the edges if they feel rough or have splinters and burrs.

Step 4: Build the Floating Shelf Frame

First, lay out the frame for your floating shelf on the floor in your garage or shed, or on a work table. Next:

  • Place the long boards on each side.
  • Place the short pieces inside, spaced evenly.
  • Use a drill to drill pilot holes for your screws.
  • Use your 2” or 3” wood screws to attach the frame parts together.
  • Be sure to use wood glue for extra strength.
  • Use wood clamps to hold everything together tightly while the glue dries. (About 12 hours.)

Step 5: Attach the Floating Shelf’s Frame to the Wall

Now you’re ready to mount the frame to the wall you’ve chosen. To do that, you should:

  1. Line up the frame with your wall markings.
  2. Double-check with your level to make sure everything is straight before drilling any holes.
  3. Drill pilot holes through the frame into the studs.
  4. Use screws to attach the frame securely to the wall.

If there are no studs available, use wall anchors to keep the frame held firmly to the wall.

Step 6: Add the Top Board to Your Floating Shelf

Once the frame is on the wall and held firmly in place, it’s time to place the actual shelf onto it. To do that:

  1. Place the top board onto the frame.
  2. Use plenty of wood glue along the top edges.
  3. Press the board down firmly onto the frame.
  4. Drill some pilot holes into the top and frame.
  5. Use a few small screws from the top to hold it in place.

Pro tip: You can also cover the sides of the floating frame with wood if you want a thicker, framed look. Just cut side and front pieces from some of your leftover wood and attach them using glue and screws.

Step 7: Sand and Finish Your Floating Shelf

Once everything has been glued and screwed into place, use sandpaper to smooth any rough edges. This not only makes your shelf look nicer and more finished, but also helps the paint or stain to stick. Now you can choose to:

  • Paint your shelf to match your wall.
  • Stain the wood to show off the grain.
  • Add a clear coat for protection.
  • Mount the shelf without painting for a “natural” look.

If you decide to paint and finish your floating shelf, be sure to let it dry fully before placing items on top.

Tips for the Best Floating Shelf Results

  • Double check your measurements. As the experts say, “measure twice, cut once”.
  • Use a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the screws you use.
  • Use safety goggles and ear protection when cutting, drilling or hammering.
  • Sand, dust and clean your floating shelf thoroughly before you stain or paint it.
  • Keep your work area clear and organized. This reduces errors and accidents.
