Over five million new small businesses are started every year in the US. Running a small business can be rewarding, but it also has its challenges, and one of the biggest is a lack of space and organization. If you want to ensure safety and efficiency in your small business, freeing up some space might be a good idea. Below, we’ll explain how using a self-storage unit can make the difference between stagnancy and scaling. Read on to help your small business go from surviving to thriving from the self storage specialists at NSA Storage!

Small Businesses Need on Space to Grow

Most small businesses start from home, whether in a spare bedroom, basement, or garage. These spaces, unfortunately, have their limits, which can slow your growth and progress to a crawl.

Here are a few of the challenges a too small workspace or work area can present:

  • Not enough space to store and organize inventory
  • Tools, materials and equipment are scattered
  • Documents and paperwork pile up on desks and other surfaces
  • Non-essential items take up limited space
  • Room to grow and expand is becomes limited

More Storage Space for Inventory

One of the biggest small business challenges is storing and organizing inventory. When you expand your space with a self storage unit, some benefits include:

A man and woman in a pottery store looking at a laptop.
  • Inventory and overstock can be stored safely out of the way
  • You can organize your inventory in any way you choose
  • Your inventory will be more accessible with less hassle
  • You can quickly scale stock supplies without the stress of where to store it.

This self-storage benefit is perfect for:

  • Small business that sell online
  • Small retail shops
  • Subscription-based businesses
  • Business that specialize in hosting events

Storage Space for Materials, Tools, and Equipment

Millions of businesses rely on their materials, tools, and equipment. All of those things need to be stored safely and securely, which can become problematic as you try to expand.

Having a self-storage unit to store your materials, tools, and equipment allow you to:

  • Store everything in a safe location with 24/7 security
  • Prepare for jobs more quickly and easily
  • Keep everything well organized
  • Reduce damage to equipment and tools

This self-storage benefit is perfect for:

  • Contractors
  • Electricians, plumbers, and other tradespeople
  • Cleaning companies
  • Rental companies
  • Event-based companies

Room to Store Documents, Paperwork, and Records

Almost all small businesses have one thing in common: lots of paperwork, documents, and records. Sure, it might be minimal at first, but all those papers can quickly grow into a mountain of mess and clutter.

Renting a self-storage unit helps in several significant ways:

  • Your documents contracts, records, and client files will be in a secure location
  • Your workspace will be free of paper clutter
  • You’ll maintain compliance in your industry
  • Organizing everything will be easier

This important benefit is the perfect for:

  • Medical businesses like dentists, orthodontists, chiropractors, etc.
  • Design houses where copyrights and intellectual properties are important
  • Architectural firms
  • Law firms

A Place to Store Seasonal Supplies, Displays, and Products

Many small business owners rely on seasonal supplies, decor, and inventory to stay profitable. During the off-season, however, all of these items can become a distraction and devour much-needed workspace.

A storage unit allows you to store these items out of the way until you need them again, including:

  • Holiday decorations
  • Supplies for seasonal events
  • Seasonal product lines
  • Promotional display items

Increased Flexibility for Growth and Scaling without Disruptions

For a small business the ability to be flexible and make quick course corrections when needed can be a game-changer. For example, your business might only need extra storage space in October, November, and December for the holiday rush.

At NSA Storage, we offer benefits that help you scale quickly without forcing you to rent space you don’t need year-round.

  • We offer month-to-month leases with NO long-term contracts.
  • You can rent for 1 month, 3 months, or however many you need.
  • Our storage facilities offer several different sizes of storage units, so you don’t pay for space you don’t need.
  • Climate-controlled units keep inventory in perfect condition.

Cost-Effective Small Business Growth

Of all the benefits of self storage for small businesses this one might be the most impactful: the ability to grow without breaking your budget. The fact is, commercial space can be expensive, especially retail space. Plus, once you’ve committed to a space, it’s difficult and costly to move to another.

Self-storage is a cost effective solution thanks to these benefits:

A man buying pastries at a pastry shop.
  • It reduces your overhead, sometime significantly
  • There are no maintenance costs (cleaning, utilities, etc.)
  • 24/7 security is included in the cost of the rental
  • You won’t be forced to relocate your business

With a storage unit lowering your overhead, you can invest those savings into:

  • Marketing and advertising
  • Purchasing inventory
  • Increasing your staff or team

Maintain and Increase Your Business’s  Productivity

This last benefit of self-storage is likely the most important: the ability to maintain and increase productivity. An open, clean, and well-organized work area helps you and your team in many ways, including:

  • You and your team will have far fewer distractions
  • Faster access to tools and materials with less time searching
  • Improved creativity
  • Improved morale and positivity
  • Improved safety
  • A more professional appearance
  • Better communication between you and other team members
  • Improved performance all around

The fact is, small businesses run well when people are happy, positive, and not distracted. If you can provide the space to meet those needs, growth and success become inevitable!

If you’re thinking of putting your items in self-storage, or if you’re one of millions of Americans who already have a storage unit, it’s important to know how to protect your stored items. In the winter months, extreme cold can damage your belongings. Even worse is that the signs of cold damage are hard to see until it’s too late. Figure out which items are vulnerable and how to protect them with this guide from NSA Storage.

What Causes Cold Damage in Self Storage?

You might think that cold damage is all about freezing temps. What actually causes most cold damage, however, is moisture.

Person leaning against windowsill with a window covered in condensation.

Falling temperatures cause moisture in the air to turn into condensation. This moisture can cause wood to warp, metal to rust, and electronics to corrode. It also causes mold and mildew, which can be extremely damaging to many items.

Another reason for cold damage is that, when something freezes, it contracts. Then, when it warms up again, it expands. If this happens often enough, the contraction and expansion can weaken and even destroy, many items. That’s why major temperature swings can cause damage while something is in a storage unit.

To summarize, cold damage in storage can be caused by:

  • Temperatures below 32°F or 0°C
  • Rapid or constant temperature swings
  • Condensation and the moisture it creates
  • Contraction and expansion of materials

Items that are Most at Risk for Cold Damage in Storage

There are a wide range of items that are at risk of cold damage in storage. Below we’ll take a look at all of them, what can happen, and how to avoid costly or irreversible damage.

Electronic Equipment

Electronics are one of the most commonly damaged items in storage due to cold. Moisture from condensation is typically the culprit, damaging internal components, screens, and, especially, batteries.

Electronics most at risk include:

  • TVs
  • Computers, including laptops and PCs
  • Gaming consoles
  • Printers
  • Stereo equipment like speakers, subwoofers, etc.

Also, keep in mind that tools and appliances are also electronics, just on a bigger scale. These include:

  • Fridges and freezers
  • Washers
  • Dryers
  • Power tools
  • Lawn equipment

Damage Prevention Tips:

  • Whenever possible, store electronics in their original packaging
  • Store them off of the floor
  • Wrap electronics in moving blankets if you don’t have their original packaging

Furniture

Many kinds of common furniture can be damaged by cold while in storage. The expansion and contraction leads to cracking, warping, and other damage. Leather-bound furniture can dry out and crack, and any type of fabric can grow mold and mildew if it gets wet.

Furniture most at risk include:

  • Anything made of wood, like tables, chairs, and dressers
  • Furniture with veneers
  • Upholstered furniture
  • Leather furniture

Damage Prevention Tips

  • Don’t cover furniture in plastic
  • Use breathable covers or moving pads
  • Ensure good ventilation

Clothing and Textiles

Moisture can cause mold and mildew, which breaks down the fabric. This can happen quite quickly, so prevention is a must.

Clothing and textiles most at risk include:

  • Anything made with leather
  • Wool clothing
  • Vintage clothes
  • Wedding dresses
  • Blankets
  • Rugs

Damage Prevention Tips

  • Clean everything well before storage
  • Dry thoroughly
  • Use garment bags or wardrobe boxes

Documents, Photos, and Paperwork

It’s probably not a surprise that most paper can be negatively affected by moisture. Condensation due to cold swings affects papers, documents and photos, which can become brittle, discolored, and cracked. Even worse, restoring them afterward is almost impossible.

Paper items most at risk include:

  • Photographs
  • Legal docs
  • Books
  • Comic books
  • Paintings
  • Posters

Damage Prevention Tips

  • Keep papers off of concrete floors
  • Use specialized archival boxes

Common Kitchen Items

Many everyday kitchen items were never designed to be frozen, especially if they contain liquids. Expansion can make them brittle and even cause some containers to burst.

Common kitchen items most at risk include:

  • Ceramics
  • Candles
  • Glassware
  • Tableware
  • Anything with liquid inside

Damage Prevention Tips

  • Dry everything well
  • Use boxes with plenty of padding
  • Wrap things well with paper
  • Avoid storing liquids

Musical Instruments

Corroded trumpet in an open case.

Musical instruments are especially sensitive to extreme cold. Cold air, for example, affects their tension. Expansion and contraction damages wood integrity, also, and can damage metal components.

Musical instruments most at risk include:

  • Pianos
  • Brass instruments like trombones, and trumpets
  • Woodwind instruments like clarinets, flutes, and saxophones
  • String instruments like guitars, violins, violas, and cellos

Prevention Tips

  • Store instruments in their hard case
  • Clean and dry them well before storage
  • Keep them off concrete floors
  • For long-term storage, loosen their strings

Climate Controlled Storage: A Good Solution to Cold Damage

One of the very best ways to prevent cold damage in storage is to use a climate controlled storage unit. These specialized storage units provide several benefits over normal units, including:

  • Humidity control
  • Temperature maintenance
  • Improved air circulation
  • Protection from direct sunlight

Climate controlled storage units keep the temperature and humidity stable year-round. This prevents the contraction, expansion, and condensation that are the main cause of cold damage in storage. It’s like having an extra layer of protection for every item you have in your storage unit! If you live in an area that also has hot or humid summers, climate-control is a no-brainer for your stored items.

Rent a Climate Controlled Storage Unit with NSA Storage

If you’re going to rent a storage unit to store things you want to keep, protect, and preserve, the tips above will definitely help. Most are easy to use and don’t require anything special or costly.

To reserve a climate controlled storage unit from NSA Storage, simply click the link and fill in your info! Once you’re done, your storage units will be ready to use at your discretion! Until then, be sure to stay warm!

If you’re lucky enough to own a boat you know it can be a source of great joy and fun. There’s nothing like being out on the water with friends and family, making memories that will last a lifetime.

When the fun is done, though, one of your most important responsibilities is to store your boat correctly. After all, the better you care for your boat, the longer it will provide good times and fun adventures.

To help, NSA Storage put together the following list of nine must-know boat storage tips to protect your boat. If you cherish your time on the water and want to keep it going for years to come, read on!

Top Tips for Boat Storage

1. Rinse Everything with Fresh Water after Every Outing

Salt, dirt, grime, algae and other gunk can damage or ruin your boat. Because of this, it’s important to rinse everything with fresh water after every boat excursion. That way, all the salt and other nasty stuff will get washed away. Be sure to include:

A hand holding a water hose spraying the side of a boat.
  • The entire boat
  • Lifejackets
  • Seat cushions
  • Fishing and other gear
  • Ropes and chains
  • The engine(s)

2. Drain Everything Fully and Let it Dry Completely

Large or small, your boat will have water that builds up in some spots. The bilge tank, for example, as well as fish holding tanks, plumbing systems, wells, etc. If left to sit, this water can corrode and otherwise damage your boat and its parts.

To prevent this, drain everything every time you use your boat. Once drained and rinsed, let everything dry completely. This will prevent mold and mildew that can also damage your boat.

3. Use a High-Quality, Well-fitting Boat Cover

If there’s one thing that can damage a boat over the years, it’s the sun. That’s because the sun’s UV rays are very damaging in the long run. There’s also rain, sleet, hail, snow and anything that might fall from the sky.

To keep your boat in pristine condition, a well-fitting boat cover is your best solution. A fitted boat cover will protect your boat well and, more importantly, won’t blow off if the weather gets ugly.

Storing your boat outside over the winter? If so, shrink-wrapping it might be your best choice. Like food in your kitchen, shrink-wrapping your boat will provide excellent protection and keep it fresh and ready for next season.

4. If Possible, Store Your Boat Under a Hard Cover or Indoors

A boat cover and shrink wrap are great ways to protect your boat, no doubt. However, for ultimate protection, parking it under a hard cover or in a garage or shed can’t be beat.

Of course, your garage or outbuilding needs to be large enough for your particular boat. That’s why some folks build a boat port for their boats, a structure with a roof and open sides. The roof not only protects from sun, rain, and other weather, but also from heavier items like branches and hail.

5. Remove Valuable Boat Parts and Accessories when Storing Long-Term

This tip won’t help you protect your boat, per se, but will prevent theft and loss. Things like GPS units, radios, fishing rods and reels, bluetooth speakers, lifejackets, and more can be quite expensive. Unfortunately, they are also easy to steal, especially when your boat is in storage for a few weeks or months.

To make sure no theft occurs, remove anything that’s high-value after every boat outing. You can then store it inside your home or somewhere else that’s safe. Either that, or you can store your boat indoors where everything will be safe and secure. A storage unit large enough to fit a boat is a solution many boat owners use, for example.

6. Don’t Forget to Maintain Your Boat’s Trailer

If you trailer your boat to and from the water, taking care of that trailer is also important. After all, a flat tire on your trailer, or one that’s falling apart, can ruin your well-laid boating plans. Here are a few things to check regularly to make sure your trailer stays in good shape:

  • The tires, including tire pressure and tread
  • The bearings and hubs
  • The brakes (if your trailer has brakes)
  • The winch, straps, and safety chains
  • Any protective carpeting
  • The coupler, hitch ball, and lock latch

7. Oil and Wax Your Boat Often

Like a car, your boat should be waxed occasionally to prevent damage from the sun and other stuff. If your boat has any teak or other wood, you should also use the appropriate oil to keep it in good condition. The more you oil and wax, the longer your boat will stay in running condition.

8. Keep Your Boat Insurance Active During Storage

A boat in a storage unit.

Even though you’re not using it, it’s highly recommended to keep your boat insurance active during storage. Remember, mishaps, acts of God, and other things can happen even when your boat is stored.

9. Remove the Battery During Long-term Storage

This last tip will help your boat’s battery(s) to stay in working condition for a longer amount of time. Simply remove them and put them in a secure, dry area. Experts also recommend you hook the battery to a trickle charger to make sure it stays fully charged during storage.

Store Your Boat With NSA Storage

By using the tips provided today you will keep your boat in great condition for many years. Doing so will ensure that it’s always ready for some fun in the sun!

When seasons change most people change their wardrobes at the same time, whether from winter to spring or summer to fall. This seasonal closet swap is necessary, but, for many, it can be a bit overwhelming.

To reduce your stress while you change the way you dress, NSA Storage offers these top tips on how to do an easy seasonal clothing swap. Read on to discover them all and make your next seasonal closet swap a simple, straightforward task.

Tip 1: Declutter Your Closets First

This tip is one given for many different tasks, and is perfect for your next seasonal clothing swap. It’s simple: before you start to swap, declutter all your closets.

The thing is, in most closets, clutter is par for the course, especially for teenagers and younger kids. If you try to swap while everything’s a mess, it can take longer and be more confusing. Instead, do this:

  • Toss any clothes that are worn out and no longer wearable.
  • Donate gently used clothes you don’t want any longer.
  • Give away clothes you no longer want to friends and family.
  • Sell any vintage clothes you don’t want but might be valuable to a collector.
  • Arrange everything that’s left by type, color, usage, etc. (That way, you store like with like.)

Tip 2: Have Plenty of Clothing Storage Containers On Hand

A wardrobe box with shirts hung up in it.

Unless you have unlimited closet space, you’ll need to pack up and store the clothes you won’t be needing. To do that, it helps to have plenty of storage containers on hand when you make the swap. For example:

  • Wardrobe boxes- These large, double-corrugated boxes are made specifically for hanging clothes. They have a metal bar for hanging and are durable and strong.
  • Large, clear plastic bins- You want bins that are clear so that you can see what’s inside. Plastic is also preferred as it will keep out pests and water.
  • Long, flat plastic bins with wheels- These are perfect for storing clothes under a bed.
  • A vacuum-sealing device- Although not recommended for fine clothes, vacuum-sealing is definitely a space saver. (Hats, gloves, t-shirts, jeans, and more can be stored in a vacuum-sealed bag.)

Tip 3: Once Your Clothes are Swapped, Organize Your Closet Well

Now that you’ve removed one season’s clothing from your closet, be sure to organize the current season’s clothes as well as you can. That way, you’ll be able to grab what you want more quickly and easily. Here are a few tips to organize your closet(s) like a pro:

  • Group clothes by category. For example, sweaters with sweaters, dresses with dresses, slacks with slacks, etc.
  • Use thin hangers for thin clothes. No need to take up space with thick hangers when you don’t need them.
  • Use an over-the-door organizer for smaller items, shoes, accessories, etc.
  • If you can, add some shelves or hanging drawers for things like socks, belts, and other small clothing items.

Tip 4: Use Pest Deterrents to Keep Your Stored Clothes in Pristine Condition

One of the worst things that can happen to stored clothes is that moths, carpet beetles, or rodents get to them. The damage these critters can cause is often extreme, with large holes that can’t be fixed. Rats and mice can also contaminate otherwise untouched clothes with their dropping and urine.

To prevent pests from destroying your clothes while they’re stored for the season, you have a few choices:

  • Red cedar planks or blocks, which are a natural repellent. You can even find red cedar blocks with hangers to hang between your clothes.
  • Sachets filled with lavender, another natural repellent.
  • A sachet filled with cinnamon, bay leaves, and cloves.
  • Cotton balls with a dab of eucalyptus or peppermint oil on them.

Tip 5: Store Clothes in a Clean, Dry, Dark Area

Hands putting clothes into a washing machine.

Two things that can ruin clothes while they’re stored are moisture and sunlight. That’s why, when you store clothes for the season, you need to find a clean, dry, dark place for them. Here are a few suggestions and a few warnings:

Suggestions:

  • If your garage is clean and dry, it’s a good spot.
  • The back of a large closet, out of your way.
  • A climate-controlled storage unit is a great choice for valuable clothes or large wardrobes.
  • A spare bedroom

Warnings:

  • Don’t store clothes in your basement unless it’s very dry. Most basements are simply too damp.
  • Your attic is a bad choice as extreme heat can damage many types of material.
  • Sheds are often a home for rats and mice, and so not a good idea for storing clothes.

Tip 6: Get the Entire Family Involved

Unless you’re single or have no children, getting everyone involved in your seasonal closet swap is a good idea. Not only will it save you some time and effort, it’s a great way to show your kids how it’s done!

Another reason is that, with your kids in the mix, you’ll be able to see what they’ve outgrown or possibly ruined. Once you do, you can toss or donate those items.

Tip 7: Wash Clothes Before Storing Them

This last tip is one that can make a difference in whether your clothes are good next season or not. It’s a simple one, too: wash them before storing them.

Here’s the thing; bugs and rodents are attracted to body oils and food residue. You’ll find both on many items of clothes if they’re not washed well. In short, washing will help prevent clothing damage from insects and vermin.

Store Your Clothes At NSA Storage After Your Seasonal Closet Swap

Using the tips above will make your seasonal clothing swap less stressful and more fun. They will also prevent damage to the clothes you put away until next season.

If you find that there’s not enough storage space in your home for your winter or summer clothes, NSA Storage can help. Our clean, safe storage units can be found all over the country. They’re secure, too, so you can spend the season in peace knowing your clothes are in good hands. Reserve your storage unit today and you can start using it right away!

If you’re in college you know that sharing space with a roommate is part of the deal. That includes dorms and off-campus apartments, and makes learning to live in close quarters with another person a must. Of course, dorm rooms and even apartments can quickly become cramped with all sorts of stuff. When that happens, many roomies decide to share a storage unit to ease the congestion. Some roommates rent a storage unit together during breaks, too, or when they go overseas to study.

If that sounds like your situation, the info below will definitely be helpful. It’s a quick, easy-to-follow guide on how to share a storage unit with a roommate. Read on to find out more and make sharing a storage unit a pleasure instead of a pain.

Why Would You Want to Share a Storage Unit with Your College Roomie?

Before we take a closer look at how to share a storage unit with your roommate, let’s look at why. Some of the best reasons to share a storage unit include:

  • Saving money thanks to splitting the monthly unit cost
  • Having more space to live and relax in your dorm or off-campus apartment
  • Getting that extra space without needing a bigger, more expensive place
  • Having a place to store bulky stuff like bikes, seasonal gear, sports equipment, etc.

Best Tips for Stress-Free Storage Unit Sharing

Sharing anything with a roommate can be tricky, it’s true. However, if you use the tips below, you’ll cut down dramatically on any problems or awkward situations.

1. Make an Inventory of All Your Stuff

  • Use a pen and paper (or an app) to make a full inventory of everything you store in your unit
  • Update your inventory when you add things or take them out

2. Label, Label, Label

Labeling all your things will ensure that, as time passes, there’s no doubt which stuff is yours (and which isn’t). To do that:

  • Use magic markers on boxes and containers.
  • Use label stickers on large items like furniture, golf bags, and bikes
  • Put your name on each label
  • Use different colors to make things even easier

3. Divide the Storage Unit’s Space Equally

Dividing your storage space evenly will nip many problems in the bud. Here are a few tips to do it right:

  • Use duct tape to make a dividing line on the storage unit’s floor
  • Leave a space down the center of the unit for easy entry and exit

4. Use a Combination Lock (or get Multiple Keys)

A combination lock.

One of the biggest stress-creating situations when sharing a storage unit is who gets the key to the lock. To avoid this issue completely:

  • Get a combination lock
  • If you use a keyed lock, have multiple keys made and make sure all roommates get one
  • Never change the lock without updating the key or code with your roomie

How To Fairly Split the Cost of a Storage Unit

The most common point of contention when sharing a storage unit (as you might have already guessed), is the cost. Who pays what, how, and when, need to be addressed up-front. To make this task easier and remove any problems:

  • Decide in advance who will sign the rental agreement. (You, your roomie, or even a parent.)
  • Use an app to make payments quick, easy, and trackable. (Venmo, Cash App, PayPal, etc.)
  • Set a reminder on your calendar and share it with your roommate.
  • Use a prepaid card that you both deposit money into equally at the beginning of the lease.

When is a Good Time to Share a Storage Unit with Your College Roommate?

You can share a storage unit any time you like, of course. However, there are a few times during the school year that make even more sense, including:

  • When college breaks for summer and winter
  • Between leases on your off-campus apartment
  • When studying abroad for a semester or two
  • Right after graduation, so that you don’t have to rush any life-changing decisions
  • During the year if you both feel cramped in your dorm or apartment

How To Stay Friendly While Sharing a Storage Unit with Your College Roommate

Some of the biggest stress points when sharing a storage unit can be reduced or eliminated by following these tips:

  • Set some basic rules upfront
  • Put together a simple agreement and sign it together. It should establish things like when the monthly rent gets paid, who gets what space, how long you’ll keep the unit, etc.
  • Keep the unit clean and never leave stuff on your roommate’s side
  • Never look through, touch, or move your roommate’s stuff

Quick Tips for Choosing the Right Storage Unit

  • Pick the correct size. Typically, a 5×5 or 5×10 storage unit will provide more than enough space for 2 college students.
A dolly with totes and boxes parked outside of a closed self storage unit.
  • Look for a storage facility with 24/7 video cameras, a gated entry with keypad, automatic lights, etc.

If you own and run a small business, you know it takes good planning and even better decisions to keep it running well. One of the biggest decisions you’ll make, especially after a few years in business, is what to do when you need more storage space.

For many small business owners, one solution is to rent a storage unit. If you need more storage space, and wonder if a storage unit is the solution, the information below is perfect! It’s a quick guide to the many benefits of self-storage for small businesses.

Read on to get the info you need to make an educated small business decision. It’s all brought to you by the storage experts at NSA Storage!

Why Do Small Business Owners Rent Storage Units?

Storage space is essential for many small businesses. Retail store owners need storage space for supplies and overstock. Plumbers, electricians, and other professionals need storage space for tools and materials. Even if you have a small business you run from home you’ll need extra storage at some point.

The question is where. Sure, you can rent a larger retail space, but the cost might be prohibitive. You can get a bigger office, too, but again there’s that extra cost. And sure, for a home business, you can use your garage, shed, or spare bedroom.

But what if you don’t have those? And what happens when the inevitable day comes that you run out of storage space in your current location, or a bigger retail space simply isn’t available?

A storage unit solves all those problems. For example:

  • A storage unit is usually less expensive than renting a larger office or retail space.
  • Storage units are, in many cases, more secure than retail locations.
  • Storage units come in many sizes, so you can rent one that fits your needs without breaking your budget. Also, if your needs grow, you can rent a bigger unit quite easily.
  • Storage units give you a blank slate to organize your tools, supplies, files, etc., the way you like.
  • Renting a storage unit for extra storage space is much easier than moving to a new location.

What are the Major Benefits for Small Business Owners of Renting a Storage Unit?

A man in an inventory stock room talking on the phone and writing down an order.

While renting a storage unit for extra space makes perfect sense, some small business owners rent them for the other benefits they provide. Here are some examples of the major benefits a storage unit provides:

1. More Space to Work and Create

When you rent a storage unit, you’re able to get rid of everything that’s cluttering and clogging-up your workspace. That allows you to have more space to do your thing, work, create, and throw ideas around.

2. A More Organized Workplace

For many, a disorganized workplace reduces production and profitability. After renting a storage space, you can organize your workplace to increase productivity.

3. To Reduce Operating Expenses and Overhead

We’ve already mentioned how renting a storage unit can often be cheaper than renting a larger retail space or office. This can greatly reduce your overhead, giving you the funds to put towards more important aspects of your business.

4. The Ability to Easily and Quickly Grow Your Business

Sometimes small businesses grow quite fast. If that’s yours, the good thing about renting a storage unit is that it will allow you to grow as quickly as you need. When you need more storage space you can either rent a bigger storage unit or rent a second one.

5. More Flexibility

Many businesses have their “slow season”. For example, some only need a storage unit for two months in summertime, or for three months in winter to store seasonal items. That’s no problem when you’re paying month-to-month, so you can rent a storage unit as long or short as needed.

6. You Can Organize Your Storage Unit to Your Needs

You can organize your storage unit any way you like so that you can access what you need quickly and easily. For example, you can use rack shelving, file cabinets, large tool boxes, and more.

What Can a Small Business Owner Store in a Storage Unit?

Not sure what you can store in a storage unit? Below is a helpful list to give you a better idea:

  • Inventory Items– Things like products, overstock, seasonal items and anything else in your inventory.
  • Marketing Materials– Anything you use to market your small business including banners, signs, business cards, flyers and more. Tradeshow items can also be stored between trade shows.
  • Office Supplies– Every office has office supplies including paper, pens, furniture, filing cabinets and so forth. You can store all of these, and more, in a storage unit.
  • Tools– As a blue-collar worker, you depend on your tools to get the job done. Storing them in a storage unit makes sense thanks to the security and safety features.
  • Supplies and Materials– If you are a plumber, carpenter, electrician or other professional, you likely have plenty of supplies and materials. Storing them in a storage unit makes good business sense.
  • Files, Records, and Documents– Practically all small businesses have files, records, and legal documents. Since these typically need to be kept for several years for legal reasons, storing them in a storage unit is a great choice.
  • Packing and Shipping Supplies– If you sell physical items you will definitely have packing and shipping supplies on hand. Storing those in a storage unit will save you a lot of space in your office or retail location.

What Types of Small Business Could Benefit from Having a Storage Unit?

Not sure if a storage unit is right for your small business? Here are a few that would benefit greatly:

  • Retail stores and shops
  • Plumbers, Electricians, and other technical laborers
  • Craftspeople selling online
  • Cleaning service companies
  • Real estate agencies
  • Doctors, dentists, and other medical professionals
  • Landscapers and home repair businesses

Use NSA Storage for Your Small Business Needs

As we’ve seen, a storage unit can be an affordable, easy-to-use solution to your small business storage needs. For many business owners, it’s truly the best choice when they need extra storage space.

At NSA Storage we rent to small business owners every day across the country! They enjoy the benefits of the safety, security, and convenience our storage units provide. If you need one for your small business you can reserve a storage unit online quickly and easily. When you’re moving to a new home, packing things usually takes the most time and energy. That goes double for fragile items, which need to be packed correctly so they make it to your new home undamaged. Proper packing becomes even more essential if you plan to store your breakable items in self storage, especially long-term.

That’s easier said than done, however, since the average person has no idea how to pack fragile items. If that’s you, and you can’t pack a piece of stemware or crystal to save your life, you’re in luck! NSA Storage crafted the article below just for you, packed with tips, hacks, and advice for packing fragile stuff!

If you’re moving soon and need help making sure your breakable items stay in good shape while stored, read on. The info below will help you become a item packing pro!

Why Packing Fragile Items Correctly is Important

Why is it so important to pack fragile items correctly? Because if you don’t, they can:

  • Crack, break, or fall apart when being moved.
  • Be scratched, damaged or destroyed during storage.
  • Be so loose in their box that they bang up against each other and break.
  • Costs you a lot of money (and just as many tears) to replace.

What Packing Supplies and Tools Do You Need?

As with any big task, having the right tools and supplies on hand when you pack fragile items is critical. Below is a list of the supplies and tools you’ll need to make packing your breakable items safer and faster:

  • Double corrugated dish pack boxes
  • Telescoping mirror boxes
  • Bubble wrap
  • Clean, ink-free packing paper
  • Packing peanuts
  • Packing tape
  • Indelible ink markers for labeling packed boxes

The Most Common Fragile Items

If you’re not sure what counts as “fragile”, the list below will help:

A white china set including plates, teacups, and teapots.
  • Ceramic dishes and bowls
  • Glass cups, mugs, and other items
  • Mirrors
  • Frames
  • Crystal stemware and other crystal items
  • Holiday ornaments
  • Artwork like statues and sculptures
  • Collectibles

Top 9 Tips for How to Pack Fragile Items for Self Storage

1. Be Sure to Use the Correct Box(es)

Most fragile items can be packed in large, 6-cubic-feet dish pack boxes. These are double corrugated boxes that are super strong. Mirrors and large pictures, on the other hand, need mirror boxes. These telescoping boxes protect these large, heavy, awkward, fragile items.

2. Wrap Fragile Items with Plenty of Packing Paper

Now is definitely not the time to skimp on supplies, especially packing paper. Most breakable items need at least four or five sheets to be well packed and padded and not get damaged. Don’t skimp on the paper!

3. Add Padding to Each Box Before Starting

Be sure to crumple a couple of dozen pieces of packing paper to pad the bottom of each box. This will serve as excellent padding that will absorb any shocks or drops when moving and storing your breakable items. Squish them down into the bottom of the box!

 4. Pack Things Gently but Tightly

The last thing you want is for your fragile things to be loose in their box. Instead, you want to pack fragile items gently with paper but also tightly. That way, there’s less chance that any sudden movements, which are normal when moving and storing things, will cause damage.

5. Use Bubble Wrap and Packing Peanuts Sparingly

Cardboard boxes full of bubble wrap.

You might think that bubble wrap and peanuts should be used for all fragile items, but that’s not true. The vast majority of fragile items can be well packed with simple, clean, ink-free packing paper. If you have super fragile things that need peanuts or bubble wrap, go for it, but don’t use them on everything.

6. Plates Should be Packed Standing on Edge

Everyone knows that, in your cupboards, you stack plates flat on top of each other. However, when packing plates, it’s best to wrap them in paper and then stand them on their edge in the box.

Experts recommend wrapping 3 or 4 plates together, maximum, and then standing them on their edge together. Start from large plates and work your way to smaller and smaller plates as you go up.

7. Pack Glasses and Stemware Standing Up

Glasses and stemware should always be packed standing straight up like they would be in your kitchen cabinets. Never lay any type of glass or stemware on its side for packing or storage. Even a small amount of pressure can break them.

8. Use Box Dividers for the Most Fragile Items

You might’ve seen box dividers when you purchased a case of wine or some other beverage in glass bottles. They are basically cardboard dividers that keep each bottle from banging together and breaking. The same dividers can be used to pack very fragile stemware and other items and make it much easier.

9. Label All Your Boxes Well

This isn’t a packing tip, per se, but one that will still help you. Labeling all of your boxes clearly with indelible ink will make moving into your new home much easier. Thanks to that labeling, you’ll know exactly which box has what, and where it should go in your new home.

Should You Store Fragile Items in a Climate Controlled Storage Unit?

Depending on the type of fragile items you need to store, a climate controlled storage unit might be best. These specialized units keep the temperature and the humidity stable throughout the year. That means, for example, that high humidity won’t be a problem, and neither will temperature spikes both hot and cold.

Experts recommend packing the following items in a climate controlled storage unit:

  • Expensive artwork
  • High-end electronic equipment
  • Pictures and picture albums
  • High-end upholstered furniture
  • Anything that can be affected by high humidity or extreme temperatures

Store Your Fragile Items with NSA Storage

Hopefully the tips and hacks provided today will empower you to pack your breakable items like a pro. Once you get started, you’ll find that it’s not as difficult as it might have seemed. Just take your time, be careful, and if you need to, use extra packing paper.

If you need a clean, safe, and secure storage unit to store your fragile things, NSA Storage can help. NSA has storage facilities across the United States, including climate controlled storage units. They’re perfect for storing your delicate, fragile, and valuable belongings both short-term and long-term.

If you’re ready, you can reserve a storage unit online quickly and easily. That way, when you arrive, it will be ready to go! Until then best of luck packing and storing your fragile items!

If there’s one thing in life you can be sure of, it’s that things will always change. Situations change, people change, and lives change, and sometimes those changes can be a bit difficult. During these life transitions, having access to a self-storage unit can be incredibly helpful. Why? You’ll find several excellent answers to that question, below. If you’re dealing with life changes and need help and advice, read on. The good folks at NSA Storage have insightful, actionable info on how self storage helps in life transitions, below!

Why Do People Use Self-Storage?

Before we look at how self storage helps in life transitions, it’s helpful to know why people use self storage. The fact is, most folks turn to self storage units for several reasons, including the following:

  • Keeping cherished or precious belongings safe while changes are happening.
  • Creating more usable living space at home while making decisions about certain possessions.
  • Protecting their personal belongings from damage before or after a natural disaster.
  • Reducing clutter and organizing, which can help manage emotional trauma and stress.
  • Creating more usable living space in their home, office, etc.

Below are several, more specific, reasons why people use self storage during several common life transitions. As you’ll see, most of them will definitely help during traumatic, stressful or difficult changes in your life.

The Death of a Loved One

One of the most challenging life transitions we all encounter is losing a loved one. Whether a grandparent, parent, or child, sorting through their belongings can be very difficult and emotional.

In situations like these, a self storage unit can provide a temporary place to store that person’s belongings safely. More importantly, during that time, family members can focus on grieving and celebrating the life of their departed loved one. Once they’re ready, their items will be waiting in a secure storage unit. Donating, keeping, or passing on items is easier when they’re organized in a storage space.

Benefits:

  • More time to make thoughtful decisions about certain belongings. No rushing needed.
  • Sentimental or valuable items will be secure until a decision is made on where, or to whom, they will go.
  • A storage unit can provide a neutral space to reduce emotions and emotional stress.

Moving from One Home to Another

Couple looking at stacks of moving boxes.

Moving is one of the most stressful situations that most people will encounter in their life. Even if it’s a short move across town, organizing, packing, and physically moving your belongings can be extremely taxing.

For many people, moving can seem overwhelming, but having a storage unit can make it much easier.  Storage units are a flexible, affordable solution to keep items safe until everything has been moved.

Benefits:

  • You can keep everything organized while you pack and unpack.
  • If your new home closing is delayed, a storage unit can provide a safe, secure place for your belongings.
  • A storage unit provides extra space to store furniture and other items temporarily. This can be extremely helpful while you pack, donate, and otherwise organize your valuables.
  • You can take items from storage to your new home at your own pace.

Recovering from or Preparing for a Natural Disaster

Hurricanes, wildfires, floods and other natural disasters occur all the time. Even worse, they seem to be getting more severe every year.  Not only are these disasters traumatic but also, in many cases, devastating. They damage homes and belongings and often destroy them completely.

Having access to a storage unit can help you prepare if you know a natural disaster is headed your way. They can also help you recover afterwards, as you sift through the items that were left behind. Below are some of the best benefits a storage unit provides when dealing with a natural disaster.

Benefits:

  1. Before a natural disaster strikes , you can store valuable, important items in a safe, climate controlled storage unit.
  2. After a disaster, you can keep undamaged belongings safe while you rebuild or restore your home.

Depending on where you live, a climate controlled self-storage unit can be a better choice. These specialized storage units keep the temperature and humidity stable throughout the year. For items that are fragile or easily damaged, a climate-controlled storage unit can be a huge help.

Changes in Family Life

Families come in all shapes and sizes, and sometimes the family structure can change. Happy occasions such as marriages or births can mean having twice as much stuff in one space. This can be difficult to manage, especially as you’re focused on the details of welcoming a new family member into the fold. Self-storage units can be helpful during these times as you figure out where all of your items will go.

A divorce or separation can also cause need for a storage unit. This can be an emotional and stressful time for all parties, and figuring out the logistics only adds to the strain. Moving out, dividing up belongings, and adjusting to new living arrangements is no walk in the park. Having a storage unit available can make this challenging transition a bit smoother. It gives you a place to keep personal items until any final decisions have been made. It’s also a “neutral” space, which can be very helpful during this challenging time.

Benefits:

  • A self-storage unit gives you a secure, personal space to store your belongings during the divorce or separation proceedings.
  • You can keep your personal items separate until all of your legal matters have been settled.
  • Having  a storage unit will reduce the stress of having to immediately find a permanent new home for all of your belongings.
  • Knowing that your things are safe, you can take your time searching for a new home or apartment.

Downsizing to a Smaller Home

Senior couple dancing happily in a kitchen.

Downsizing is something almost all folks go through at one point in their lives. Usually it’s due to retirement preparation, but downsizing can also reduce your bills and your daily chores and tasks.

Decluttering and downsizing can also be emotional as you go through items you’ve been given or gifted over the years. Having a self storage unit to store these items can make that process a bit easier to handle.

Benefits:

  • Extra space for items that won’t fit into your new, smaller home.
  • More time to sort through belongings without the constant pressure of having to move them right away.
  • A self storage unit can empower you to keep sentimental items safe for future generations.
  • Self storage offers a temporary solution for dealing with items that might be difficult to part with.

Be sure to explore the job market and do your due diligence before your move to Phoenix. That way, you’ll get a sense of which industries are thriving.

What to Know about Housing Costs in Phoenix, Arizona

There’s no denying that one of the most appealing aspects of living in Phoenix is its relatively affordable housing. Compared to many other major cities, Phoenix offers reasonable housing prices for both renters and buyers.

Financial experts recommend moving to Phoenix now rather than later to take advantage of the lower home prices.

Phoenix has Beautifully Mild Winters

Phoenix is well-known for its dry, desert climate. You can expect mild, delightful winters while living here. Indeed, winter is one of the city’s most enjoyable seasons, making Phoenix a popular destination for snowbirds.
