Barbecuing is an undeniably American activity that’s loved across the country, with millions using their favorite barbecue equipment to create delicious meals for their families. From the famous “Big Green Egg” to smokers, broilers, and more, everyone has their favorite BBQ gear! At the end of the barbecuing season, however, storing your BBQ equipment is essential so that, next season, it’s ready to use once again. To help you do that, the storage specialists at Move It Storage have compiled this list of the best tips and hacks for storing barbecue equipment. Read on to learn how to keep your equipment in top shape during the off-season.

1. Clean Your BBQ Equipment Well Before Storage

As with anything you wish to store long-term, cleaning your equipment before storing it is crucial. You need to remove any ash, grease, and food particles so they don’t cause corrosion or nasty smells. Also, cleaning food off your BBQ equipment will prevent pests like insects and rodents from gathering in your gear for a free meal.

2. Use a Heavy-Duty Grill Cover

The average barbecue grill costs about $180, and some can cost substantially more, making your grill a considerable investment. For that reason, investing in a heavy-duty grill cover is highly recommended. A grill cover offers several benefits, including protecting your grill from rain, sleet, snow, and falling debris.

3. Consider Insurance or Coverage for High-End BBQ Equipment

Purchasing extra insurance might be a good idea if you have high-end BBQ equipment. For example, a Big Green Egg or similar grills/smokers can cost upwards of $2200! If something were to damage your grill and BBQ equipment, it could be a financial disaster. Extra insurance/extended coverage would soften the blow.

4. Purchase a Weatherproof Cabinet to Store Your BBQ Equipment

Barbecuing is typically done outdoors, so that’s where all of your BBQ equipment needs to be when you’re grilling. Let’s face it: running back and forth inside your house every five minutes to grab something could lead to overdone steaks, ruined shrimp, or some other food disaster.

To prevent that, one suggestion is to purchase a weatherproof cabinet that can stay outdoors. These cabinets are typically very sturdy and offer ample storage for your BBQ gear, including forks, brushes, spatulas, tongs, charcoal briquettes, and anything else you use to cook up your favorite foods.

5. Invest in a Good Rolling Cart

Moving heavy grills or smokers can be challenging and, in some cases, downright difficult. To make the chore easier, many manufacturers make heavy-duty rolling carts where you can place your BBQ and most of your equipment. Of course, the beauty of these carts is the ability to roll your barbecue out of the garage or shed for use and, after the grilling is done, roll it back into storage easy-peasy. Also, most of your gear will be in one convenient place.

6. Smokers Can Be Stored in a Garage or Shed

Most smokers use wood, wood chips, or charcoal, not propane gas. For that reason, if you have a smoker you want to store, you can do it in your garage or shed. One thing to note is that you should empty your smoker of any wood or charcoal before storing it so that there’s no risk of anything catching fire.

7. Keep Your BBQ Gear Well Organized

There’s nothing worse than wanting to grill some delicious food outdoors and not being able to find the gear you need. For that reason, keeping it well organized is a must. You can use the methods below to do just that.

  • Install hooks or a pegboard near your barbecue area to hang utensils and tools.
  • Use a weather-proof storage container like the one we mentioned earlier.
  • Set up a dedicated shelving area in your garage or shed for your BBQ equipment so it’s all in one place.

Can You Store a Propane Tank in a Storage Unit?

Although you can store most barbecuing equipment in a storage unit, one thing you should never store there is your propane tank. There are several reasons for this, including:

  • Propane is highly flammable and can cause an explosion or fire if your tank leaks.
  • Temperature fluctuations can lead to high pressure and the risk of rupturing your propane tank.
  • Most storage units lack the proper ventilation for storing a propane tank, especially if a leak develops.
  • Move It Storage does NOT allow you to store propane tanks in their storage units.

If you have more questions about what you can and can’t store in a storage unit, visit our Storage FAQ. For information on the proper storage of propane tanks, read the label on the tank.

Store Your BBQ Equipment with Move It Storage

If you have a lot of barbecue equipment to store or other household items, and you want everything to stay safe and secure, count on Move It Storage. At Move It, we offer safe, clean storage units of various sizes. We recommend our 5×5 or 5×10 storage unit for barbecue equipment (unless you’re storing more stuff). Please remember, however, that you can’t store propane tanks in our storage units. When ready, you can reserve a storage unit from Move It online. Until then, have a fantastic time grilling up all your favorite foods!

When it comes to home storage, having a shed in your backyard can be a lifesaver. Sheds allow you to store various items that usually take up valuable space in your garage. Things like outdoor furniture, barbecue grills, lawnmowers, and lawn care tools can be stored in your shed instead, freeing up valuable storage space in the rest of your home.

Of course, like any space, your shed can become cluttered and disorganized if you’re not careful, which can be frustrating and time-consuming if you need to find something specific. Before that happens (or if it already has and you need help), look at the top tips for organizing your shed below. They’re brought to you by the storage pros at NSA Storage, so you know they’re going to be super-helpful!

Tip 1: Check the Weather Report

Organizing a shed can often be an hours-long affair. For starters, you’ll need to take a lot of stuff out of the shed, which means putting items outside on your driveway or lawn. The last thing you need is for it to start raining and soak all your stuff, so be sure to check the weather report before starting. That way, you’ll be sure to have dry weather while you organize.

Tip 2: Take Everything Out of Your Shed

As you can imagine, it’s difficult to organize a shed that’s full to the brim with stuff. It’s better to take everything out so you can start with a clean slate.

Tip 3: Use a Tarp when Organizing a Garden Shed

If you’re emptying your garden shed, and it’s surrounded by grass, put down a large tarp first. That way, you can lay out all of your tools on the tarp, see them better, protect them from possible wet grass, and protect your grass, also. There’s nothing worse than losing some nails in the grass and finding them later—ouch!

Tip 4: Assess Your Space

Once your shed is completely cleared, give yourself a few minutes to check it out and determine exactly the amount of space you’re dealing with. Is there room to put up shelving? Does it have rafters to hang stuff? What items do you need to access easily, and where can you put them? If you answer these questions before organizing, you’ll have better results in maximizing shed space.

Tip 5: Use Shelving

There’s no denying that shelving of any kind can significantly increase the amount of storage space in your shed by utilizing vertical space. Some of the bigger metal shelving you can find in big-box home improvement stores can be upwards of 6 feet tall and have five or six big, roomy shelves.

Any kind of shelving works in a shed, but attaching shelf brackets directly to the wooden beams is secure and hassle-free. If you have extra lumber, turning it into shelves and using simple brackets can be a great money-saving solution. Plus, you can go even higher and use more vertical space. (Just be careful!)

Tip 6: Create Dedicated Spaces in Your Shed

Your typical shed will contain various items, including lawn care, outdoor furniture, and sports equipment. A well-organized shed has dedicated spaces for all of these different items. The left rear corner is for outdoor furniture; for example, the right is for lawn care, the ceiling rafters are for hoses and extension cords, etc.

By creating dedicated spaces, you’ll keep your shed well-organized, and you won’t waste time searching for things when you need them. Be sure to put items back in their dedicated spaces after every use to maintain the system.

Tip 7: Put an Emphasis on Power Tool Organization

A good rake or shovel can set you back 20 or 30 bucks. On the other hand, a high-quality table saw, cordless drill, wood planer, or welding equipment can cost several hundred dollars or more. To make sure you don’t lose or damage your expensive hardware, organizing your power tools demands more attention than regular tools.

Experts recommend custom holders and pegboards to keep power tools organized well and away from possibly wet or humid surfaces. It’s also recommended to store batteries and chargers in a designated spot and create a charging area for all your battery-operated power tools. In short, take extra care when organizing power tools so they stay in excellent working condition.

Tip 8: Make a Gardening Tool Holder with PVC Pipes

Various garden tools leaning on the fence

A garden tool holder can be a lifesaver when organizing a shed and will keep long-handled tools from creating clutter. It’s also safer to keep sharp tools in a visible, organized space instead of a pile where someone could reach in and get cut. Here’s how to make it:

  1. Start with a 5-gallon plastic bucket. You can reuse a paint bucket or purchase a new one.
  2. Purchase 20 feet of 2-inch PVC pipe and cut it into 2-foot lengths.
  3. Fill the bottom of the bucket about 6 to 8 inches using a small bag of quick-drying cement.
  4. Before the cement dries completely, but after it has hardened slightly, place the ten 2-foot long PVC pipes into it, standing vertically and spaced equally. The garden tool handles will slot into the empty spaces once it’s dried.
  5. Ensure the PVC pipes are stable and not leaning to one side.
  6. Let the concrete dry completely.
  7. Place your new garden tool holder in a corner of your shed and fill it with up to 10 large garden tools.

More DIY Shed Organization Tips

  • Use magnetic strips to organize small hand tools.
  • Store small items in clear containers, including plastic and glass.
  • Using large hooks, hang bicycles, hoses, extension cords, and other items from the ceiling rafters.
  • Use a pegboard to organize hand tools.
  • Clean up each time you use something. This will help keep your shed organized long-term.
  • Use the back of your shed’s doors to hang stuff on hooks.
  • Repurpose an old dresser as a toolbox.

If you own a motorcycle, you know how liberating it can be to hit the open road and feel the wind in your face as the road races by. However, unless you live in an area of the United States that’s perpetually warm, there will be certain times of year when riding isn’t possible, especially in the depths of a cold, wet winter. The question is, where do you store your motorcycle when you’re not using it?

You’re all set if you’re lucky and have the extra garage space. However, many motorcycle enthusiasts need a space to store their motorcycles. If that’s you, and you’re wondering if you should store your wheels in a self storage unit, the information below will give you the answers you need. They’re brought to you by Move It Storage, the self storage experts. Read on to discover them all and determine if storing your motorcycle in a self storage unit is a good idea.

What’s the Appeal of a Self Storage Unit for Your Motorcycle?

Storing your motorcycle inside a self storage unit offers several benefits and advantages, especially if you need more storage at home. First and foremost, a storage unit provides a very high level of security and safety for your motorcycle. Not only will it be protected from the weather, but it will also be protected from vandals, falling debris, bird droppings, and thieves.

Self storage units are also quite convenient. Most motorcycle storage facilities have keypad-controlled front entrances that make it easy to enter an exit and long hours that allow you to take out and put back your motorcycle when you like. Last but not least, a self storage unit provides a controlled environment for your motorcycle, which is essential for keeping it in excellent shape, long-term.

Do You Need Motorcycle Winter/Spring Storage?

Motorcycle covered in snow

If you don’t have a protected place to store your motorcycle at home during the winter or Spring, you risk exposing it to the season’s harsh elements, including snow, ice, rain, sleet, and so forth. That’s when winter motorcycle storage can be a huge plus.

Winter motorcycle storage is exactly the same as any other type of storage for motorcycles. The difference is simply that the storage unit protects from harsh weather that can wreak havoc on your motorcycle’s finish and complex mechanisms.

What about a Climate Controlled Storage Unit for Your Motorcycle?

Some storage facilities offer climate controlled storage units, which provide an extra level of protection for your motorcycle. The reason is that these units keep the temperature stable, preventing winter’s cold from damaging your motorcycle’s battery, seat, tires, and more. In other words, climate controlled storage units provide much more protection than a simple motorcycle cover. Speaking of which…

Should You Cover Your Motorcycle while it’s in a Storage Unit?

Motorcycle under a cover parked

As we’ve seen, a storage unit can provide more protection for your motorcycle than leaving it outdoors when you’re not riding. One question many folks have, however, is whether you should cover your motorcycle while it’s in a storage unit.

The answer is that, although not strictly necessary, a motorcycle cover does protect your motorcycle from dust and small bits of debris while in storage. If that’s important to you, then a motorcycle cover might be a good choice. However, a motorcycle cover in a quality storage facility might not be necessary.

Top Tips on How to Store a Motorcycle

If you’ve decided to store your motorcycle in a self storage unit, the following tips will come in handy and ensure your sweet ride stays in pristine condition while stored.

1. Clean and Dry Your Cycle Well

Person cleaning their motorcycle with a cloth

Before storing any vehicle, including a motorcycle, you should clean and dry it well. Leaving your motorcycle damp before storage can cause damage to certain motorcycle parts.

2. Change the Oil and Filter before Storing Your Motorcycle

It’s best to change the old oil in your motorcycle before long-term storage, as contaminants in it and the filter can damage your engine. Therefore, changing the oil and filter before storage is a great idea.

3. Fill Your Cycle’s Gas Tank

Filling your tank with fuel will prevent moisture from accumulating inside the tank and causing rust that can damage your motorcycle’s engine when you ride it again.

4. Remove the Battery and Place it on a Trickle Charger

Like other vehicles, your motorcycle’s battery can lose its charge when it sits for weeks or months. Therefore, a trickle charger is recommended to keep it in good condition. Since most storage units don’t provide electricity, you would need to remove the battery and put it on the trickle charger in your home or apartment.

5. Use Stands to Keep the Tires from Going Flat or Getting Flat Spots

A motorcycle that’s been sitting for weeks or months at a time can cause the tires to lose their integrity and performance and cause flats and flat spots. Placing your motorcycle on a motorcycle stand is a great idea to prevent that.

6. Use a Motorcycle Cover

We mentioned that using a motorcycle cover is unnecessary if you rent a storage unit. However, if you want the utmost protection, covering your motorcycle with a quality cover is never a bad idea.

Final Thoughts on Storing Your Motorcycle in a Self Storage Unit

There’s no doubt that storing your motorcycle in a self storage unit is a good decision. Not only will you have peace of mind, but your precious ride will be protected from everything, including the elements, theft, vandalism, etc.

Move It Storage offers safe, clean, and affordable motorcycle storage units where you can easily park and protect your motorcycle during the off-season. You can rent a storage unit from Move It Storage online when ready. Until then, we hope the information provided today has given you all the answers you were seeking!

Located on Florida’s celebrated Emerald Coast, Santa Rosa Beach, FL, is a haven for thousands of folks during wintertime. The reason why is simple: the city offers warm winter weather, minimal crowds, and truly gorgeous beaches. In other words, it’s a winter paradise! A Note about Florida’s Winter Weather

There’s no denying that many parts of the United States are cold, wet, and dreary during the winter. Depending on where you live, the dreary weather can last between three and five months, or sometimes even longer! Snow, sleet, ice, hail, and gray skies are the norm in the northeast, northwest, and many others areas.

During this time, the climate is amazing in Florida, with warm days, slightly cool nights, and generally low humidity. Even better, Florida’s oppressive heat during the summer is absent during winter. In short, Florida’s winter weather is perfect for enjoying the outdoors, taking long walks on the beach, biking, playing golf, and other outdoor activities.

A unique city with a blend of urban and suburban living, Grand Prairie, Texas, is conveniently situated between Dallas and Fort Worth. This city of just under 200,000 souls is known to be family-friendly, has a rich cultural history, and has a diverse population. Grand Prairie also has mild winters, making it a fantastic place to visit or live when the weather up north is frightful. If you live in Grand Prairie and you’re searching for detailed information about what the town offers in terms of exciting entertainment and fun activities, the information below is just for you! It’s a list of 9 fun, interesting, and exciting things to do in Grand Prairie, brought to you by the area’s self storage experts, Move It Storage!

A Note about the Weather in Grand Prairie

The winter comfort index in Grand Prairie is 7.5/10, which is quite good. Winter is filled with warm days and cool (but not cold) nights, making it nearly perfect for outdoor activities. The summer comfort index is a poor 3.9/10, primarily due to the fact that Grand Prairie can get swelteringly hot and surprisingly humid in summertime. The 3 most uncomfortable months in Grand Prairie are June, July, and August. Still, with over 230 days of sunshine a year, there’s not much to complain about, weather-wise, in Grand Prairie.

9 Things to Do in Grand Prairie, Texas

1. Enjoy a Day of Fun in the Sun at Joe Pool Lake

Person holding a fishing rod during sunset

Ideal for boating, fishing, and swimming, this gorgeous lake is one of several popular outdoor locations in Grand Prairie. It’s a favorite place where families and friends gather to enjoy themselves in the Texas sun!

2. Lynn Creek Park for a Picnic

This park on the shores of Joe Pool Lake offers picnic areas and a nice beach area. You’ll find boat ramps if you bring your boat and several volleyball courts to get a game going. There are also picnic grounds to relax and enjoy meals with family and friends. Lynn Creek Park is extremely popular, so get there early to grab a parking spot during the high season.

3. Birdwatching, Mountain Biking, or Camping at Cedar Hill State Park

This state park is perfect for mountain biking, bird watching, and camping. The mountain biking trails are said to be some of the best in Texas, and the hiking trails provide many opportunities for selfies and gorgeous photographs. As for birding, keep an eye out for the White Faced Ibis, Great Blue Heron, Prairie Birds, and several other species.

4. Golfing at Tangle Ridge Golf Club

Golf course in Texas during a sunset

Golf fans can enjoy a round of links at this beautifully landscaped club. Tangle Ridge Golf Club is known for its well-maintained greens and fairways, as well as a top-notch staff and challenging but accessible course. It’s open to the public and relatively affordable, making it a popular place in Grand Prairie.

5. Lake Day at Mountain Creek Lake Park

Mountain Creek Lake Park offers walking, biking, fishing and boating.

6. Epic Waters Indoor Waterpark

This 80,000-square-foot indoor waterpark is open year-round and offers exciting waterslides, a giant wave pool, and smaller areas for the youngest members of your family. It’s an excellent spot for family fun throughout the year.

7. Visit Dallas, Fort Worth, or Arlington

Fort Worth, Arlington, and Dallas offer some amenities and activities worth traveling for. Dallas has significant museums, Broadway shows, phenomenal shopping, and distinctive dining options. The same can be said for Fort Worth. Want to watch a Dallas Cowboy’s game? Arlington is where you’ll want to be on Sunday and it’s also within a close driving distance. Having these three major cities nearby makes it hard to have nothing to do on the weekend!

8. Enjoy a Meal at One of the Grand Prairie’s Many Excellent Restaurants

Texas BBQ on a wooden table with drinks and other various side dishes
