Restoring vintage furniture is a satisfying, intricate, and often lucrative hobby. Taking the time to hunt for unique pieces and return them to their former glory is truly a labor of love. If you’re just getting started restoring vintage furniture, the tips below can help guide you through the process, brought to you by NSA Storage, the place where millions of Americans store their furniture and other belongings!

Before Starting, Evaluate the Vintage Piece

Knowing what you’ve got in front of you before you start restoring can save you time, money, energy, and headaches.

Before you begin, ask these questions:

  • Is the piece vintage or an antique? Antiques, generally speaking, don’t need restoration, they need preservation.
  • Are any joints loose or broken?
  • Are there deep scratches, dents, or stains?
  • Is the upholstery in okay shape, or is it in need or repair or replacement?

Answering these questions will help you evaluate your needs, prioritize repairs, and help you gather tools and materials.

If Needed, Stabilize Before Restoring

It’s not unusual for some vintage furniture to come with blemishes, which are typically easy to repair. Structural damage, however, is something you need to address before fixing cosmetic issues. If you try to make repairs to a vintage piece that’s unstable, you could damage it even further.

Man fixing a vintage wood chair.

Structural repairs will likely fall along these lines:

  • Loose or damaged joints
  • Wobbly legs
  • Wood that’s started to split due to rot or stress
  • Damaged or missing hardware

When gluing together wood parts, use clamps and let the glue cure before starting the restoration. Keep in mind that you might need to tighten nuts and bolts, also.

Clean Vintage Pieces Well Before Stripping

When you pick up a piece of vintage furniture it will often be in need of a deep clean. That grime, grease, dirt, dust and debris can usually be removed with minimal effort. Once clean, you may find that your restoration job has been cut in half!

In short, before using a strong stripping product, first:

  • Wash the item with mild soap and warm water. (Damp cloth, not dripping wet.)
  • If there’s grease, use a grease removing cleaner like Greased Lightning
  • For carved or intricate areas, use a soft brush or old toothbrush.

After cleaning, your piece may not need stripping after all!

Only Strip Vintage Furniture When Absolutely Necessary

Chemical stripping products are very aggressive in removing paint, stain, shellac, etc. One problem with vintage furniture is that, if you use too much or the wrong product, you can damage or even ruin it.

The same goes for sanding, which can damage a piece’s finish and make your restoration project more difficult. For those reasons you should only strip a piece when there’s no other choice.

Some of the options you have when stripping vintage furniture include:

  • Chemical strippers for pieces that can’t be sanded
  • Light sandpaper for those that can
  • Scrapers for large, flat surfaces
woman in work gloves sanding the top of a small table, with various tools and paint nearby.

Also, keep these rules in mind when stripping vintage furniture:

  • Use coarse sandpaper first and then progress to finer and finer grits
  • Sand with the grain, not against it
  • Once done, clean your piece fully before painting or staining it

Repairing Veneer

Veneer is fragile and tends to separate on vintage furniture, but if you handle it correctly, it’s no biggie. Here are a few tips to do it right:

  • If the veneer is simply lifting off, use the correct glue to put it back, and clamp it down until cured. (Wood glue works best.)
  • Use wood filler of the same color to fill missing patches of veneer.
  • For small chips and cracks, use a marker of a similar color.

Matching the Piece’s Finish and Color

Matching the color and finish on a vintage furniture piece is more about blending than finding the perfect color match. If you can blend consistently, you should have a good end result.

To blend and finish sell, use:

  • Gel stains, which give good control
  • Layer stains to add depth
  • Use glazes for an aging effect

Reupholster with Care and Purpose

Reupholstering is a bit tricky, especially for newbies. That said, it can also completely modernize and revamp a vintage piece while keeping its charm and allure.

Here are a few reupholstering tips to help you do it well:

  • Be very careful when removing old upholstery so you don’t damage the item
  • If needed, replace the padding or stuffing
  • Carefully cut a new piece of fabric to the correct size. (Measure twice, cut once.)
  • Use either a heavy-duty staple gun or tack to attach the new fabric
  • Smooth wrinkles as you go
  • Finish the edges

Storing Restored Vintage Furniture

If your plan is to restore a single piece of vintage furniture, you probably won’t need to store it. If, however, you plan to restore many, or plan to sell your pieces, a self-storage unit can be very helpful.

Furniture, whether vintage or new, takes up a lot of space. If you have lots of restored pieces waiting to sell, you’ll need somewhere to put them so your home doesn’t fill up!

A storage unit solves that problem. Here’s how:

  • You can store your restored pieces there, not at home
  • You can organize them in storage
  • Taking photos to sell them online will be easier
  • You can store your tools and materials in your storage unit
  • They will be safe and secure in storage

Do Your Restoration Work in an NSA Storage Unit

For thousands of years, books have been one of humanity’s preferred ways to spread information, stories, and points of view. If you collect books, this rich history provides a treasure trove to choose from, but also leaves one question: what are your books worth?

To help you determine the answer, NSA Storage put together this quick and handy guide to identifying valuable books. There are also some excellent tips for storing your books, as keeping them in pristine condition helps guard their value. If that sounds like the actionable info you’re searching for today, read on, book lover!

Top Tips for Identifying the Value of Your Books

There are billions of books out there on store shelves, in bookcases, and in many other places. Some are rare and valuable but, truth be told, most are not. To figure out the difference and determine if your books are valuable, use the following tips:

Look for First Editions

All books have a first edition, which basically is the first printing of the book. If it becomes popular and all those copies sell, a 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th edition will be printed.

For collectors seeking high value, the first edition is almost always the highest. There’s just something about being “first” that collectors crave, so keep that in mind as you search. Here’s a quick checklist to help:

  1. The copyright page will often say “First Edition” or “First Printing”, which are the same thing.
  2. Look for the number line or “printer’s key”. If it starts with the number “1”, it’s a first edition.
  3. Look at the dust jacket for clues.
  4. Check the publisher info to be sure it matches the original. Some companies buy a book and reprint it themselves.

Scarcity Increases a Book’s Value

Scarcity means that something, including a book, is scarce or was made in limited quantities. The fewer copies of the book that were made, the more valuable it can be.

A Signed Copy can Often Increase a Book’s Value

A person signing the inside cover of a book.

Books signed by their original author are often more valuable, especially if the author, or the book, are well-known. A signed copy of “Jaws” by Peter Benchley, for example, will be much more valuable than another copy of the same exact book.

Culturally or Historically Significant Books are Usually Worth More

Did the book you’re buying cause a revolution? Was it printed during a significant time, like the American Civil War or the European Renaissance? If yes, or something similar, that book might be worth a fortune.

The Book’s Condition is Important

As with all collectibles, the condition of a book is a significant factor in its overall worth. If you have two of the same book and one is in great shape while the other is worn, torn, or ragged, the former will almost always be more valuable than the latter. Speaking of which, the next section goes into how to quickly and easily determine a book’s condition.

How To Assess a Book’s Condition

Being able to quickly determine a book’s value is important if you’re going to collect them for their value. Below are the things to look for before buying any book for your collection.

  • Is the dust jacket included and in good shape?
  • Is the book’s binding secure and strong or weak and failing?
  • How are the pages? If they’re torn, stained, or “foxing” (getting brown spots), the value will be lower.
  • Are there marks, stamps, or handwriting on the book? That’s a bad sign, as books without these will typically have a higher value.
  • How is the book’s overall appearance? Any book you buy should look presentable. If it looks like it was abused or mishandled, you might want to avoid buying it.

The Best Ways to Store Valuable Books

Once you have a book, or an entire collection, knowing how to store them becomes very important. Below are some of the key rules you should follow to preserve your rare and valuable books while in storage:

  • Avoid sunlight. You should always store your books in a dark, or dimly lit, area. That’s because the UV rays of the sun can fade a cover and weaken it, even indirect sunlight.
  • Keep most books upright. Storing your books vertically will prevent warping. For extra large books, however, you can store them flat.
  • Make sure the humidity and temperature are stable. Fluctuating humidity can cause mold and warping. Temperature fluctuations can also damage your books. You should keep them in an area where the humidity is between 30-50% and the temperature stays between 65-70°F.
  • Wash your hands or wear gloves before handling your books. Even if your hands are “clean”, they can still have oils on them that can damage a book’s fragile paper. Book experts recommend wearing light gloves when handling rare books.

Should You Use Climate Controlled Self Storage for Your Books?

Figuring out where to store your books depends on how many you have in your collection. If it’s small or modest, storing them at home in a cool, dry place is probably best. However, if you have a large or even massive book collection, a climate controlled storage unit is likely your best choice.

Here’s the thing: a climate-controlled storage unit keeps the humidity and temperature inside the unit stable throughout the year. These specialized storage units also protect your books from insects and rodents, both of which can cause major damage.

Lastly, when you rent a climate control storage unit, you can use any organization options you wish. Shelving racks, for example, can make storing your valuable books easier. They can also make it easier to find a specific book when you want it.

Store Your Valuable Books with NSA Storage

There’s no denying that books have helped humanity grow, learn, and be inspired. We hope today’s article has done the same, albeit on a smaller lever, and you’ve gleaned some valuable, actionable information.

Need a storage unit to store your book collection? If yes, contact NSA Storage today in person or online. Our clean, safe storage units will provide a safe haven for all of your precious books, especially our climate-controlled storage units.

Years ago, when LEGO first started, it was a rather basic building toy. Fast forward 80 years and LEGO is one of the most popular toys in the world, with clubs, conventions, and adoring fans everywhere. Many adults today also enjoy building with LEGO , and older sets are coveted for their nostalgic, and monetary, value. This article is a continuation of “Are My LEGO Sets Valuable? A Guide to Finding and Storing LEGO Bricks” where we gave some excellent tips for finding, and storing, valuable LEGO sets. If you want more tips for building a LEGO collection for fun, value, or profit, read on!

Utilize Facebook Marketplace

Hundreds, if not thousands, of LEGO listings are posted daily on Facebook Marketplace (FBM). That includes collections of varying sizes, ages, and LEGO themes. Some are overpriced, but many are very reasonable and have valuable classic parts and sets.

Here’s what makes FBM one of the best places to find valuable LEGO sets and minifigures:

  • It’s easy to scroll and scan dozens of listings.
  • New listings are posted every day.
  • Many sellers ask very reasonable prices.
  • It’s local, so easy to visit, inspect, and get the LEGO parts.
  • Every so often, a really nice set gets listed on FBM.
  • You can build a parts collection for a reasonable price.
  • Many people still have the original boxes and instructions.
  • Prices are often better than eBay.
  • Classic parts from as far back as the 1970’s can sometimes be found.

Not every bin of used LEGO will have highly valuable sets, of course. However, if you know your LEGO , look often, and buy with care, FBM can be a valuable source of coveted LEGO sets.

Join a LEGO LUG

There are LEGO groups around the United States called LUGs (LEGO Users Group). These can be a great source for information, advice, and valuable LEGO parts and sets. Plus, they’re a wonderful way to share the hobby with like-minded LEGO enthusiasts!

Go to LEGO Conventions

LEGO conventions (CONs) are held all over the country throughout the year. Here you’ll find everything from new sets to classic, minifigures, MOCs, and more. Although some dealers set their prices high, you’ll often find sets and parts at fair, even excellent, prices. Plus, LEGO conventions are a ton of fun and camaraderie!

How To Identify Rare and Valuable LEGO Bricks, Parts, and Pieces

Identifying a particular LEGO part can help you find out if that part has a high value, or comes from a high value LEGO set. That knowledge can also help you, for example, rebuild a valuable set from a bin of LEGO parts you just purchased.

The way to identify a specific part is, in most cases, very simple; look for the LEGO part number embossed on the part. The vast majority of LEGO parts have their part number somewhere. You just need to find it. Here’s how:

  1. Get a magnifying glass, or use a magnifying app
  2. Look for the part number on the bottom of the part
  3. The number will usually be near the edge, centered to the side its on
  4. The LEGO logo and © are unimportant, but are usually close to the part number
  5. Most part numbers are 4 or 5 characters in length, maximum

Once you’ve got the part number, you can go to Bricklink and find out what sets the part comes from. Be aware, most parts are found in several different sets.

Tips for Storing LEGO Sets Long Term

Finding valuable LEGO sets, parts, and minifigures is one thing. To help preserve their value, you need to know how to store them correctly. After all, like any collectible, the more pristine a LEGO set, the more valuable it will be. That starts with proper storage, especially if you’re planning to store your LEGO long-term.

Stack Same Size LEGO Boxes Together

A LEGO set in an unopened box is, in most cases, the most valuable condition. If you collect sealed boxes, be sure to stack the same size boxes together for storage. If you, for example, stack small boxes on top of larger boxes, the larger box might get creased, smashed, or otherwise damaged.

Take Apart LEGO Sets that Have Been Assembled

Over time LEGOs’ “clutch power” can fade. Parts then become loose and tend to drop off and get lost. Some even fail completely. If you’re going to store sets long-term, taking them apart will prevent this loss of clutch power. Plus, you’ll have the joy of building them again when you take them out of storage!

Use Mirror Boxes to Store Flattened LEGO Boxes

Many folks like to build and display their LEGO sets but still keep the boxes. Of course, after a while, all those empty boxes could take up a lot of storage space.

To avoid that, cut the tape and fold your LEGO boxes flat. Then, store them as you go in a telescoping mirror box. You can fit 20 to 30 large LEGO boxes inside one mirror box, and take up much less space! Be sure to place like-size boxes together.

Store Instruction Books in Book Boxes

One LEGO instruction book isn’t going to weigh all that much, it’s true. If, however, you have 100, 200, or even more instruction books, they can weigh a lot!

For that reason, storing instruction books in 1.5 cubic foot book boxes is recommended. A book carton filled with LEGO instructions will weigh about 35 pounds. That’s not light, but it isn’t going to be impossible to move when needed, either.

Store Your LEGOs with NSA Storage

LEGO can be fun, engaging, and financially rewarding. With a little effort and due diligence (and a smidge of luck) you can create an impressive, valuable LEGO collection.

If you buy and sell a lot of LEGO, a storage unit from NSA Storage can come in very handy. Our storage units are clean, so your LEGO sets stay clean. They’re also safe and secure, so you can visit, organize, exchange, and store your LEGO without hesitation.

Reserve a storage unit online today and you can use it right away to keep your collection of LEGO in safe, pristine condition. Until then, best of luck finding your next valuable LEGO set!

For many people, LEGO isn’t just a toy. LEGO is a hobby, a connection, a fun challenge, a family activity, and even a trip down memory lane. For some, LEGO is also an investment. For those interested in the monetary value of LEGO sets, it’s best to know what you’re searching for and looking at. To help, NSA Storage presents this valuable guide to LEGO sets! Read on to find out if your sets are valuable, how to find more, and how to store them for safekeeping!

What Factors Make a LEGO Set More Valuable?

1. The Age of the Set

As with most collectibles, the older a LEGO set is, the more value it tends to gain. This is especially true if it’s older and still sealed in the original box.

2. Limited Edition and Exclusive Sets

A limited edition LEGO set, or one that was exclusive, are almost always more valuable. One great example are the limited edition Christmas-themed sets given only to LEGO employees and brand ambassadors. Comic convention (CON) LEGO sets always shoot up in value, also.

3. The Overall Condition of the Set

A collection of colorful LEGO bricks.

Collectors know that anything is more valuable when it’s in excellent condition. The same goes for LEGO , which means you need to look for:

  • Sets that are complete. Missing parts or minifigures can put a huge dent in a LEGO set’s value.
  • Parts and pieces that have not faded, been painted, cracked or broken, etc. (White and gray parts tend to fade badly. Brown parts are the most prone to breaking.)
  • The original box and instructions. Sets with their OG box and instructions (in good to great condition), make a LEGO set much more valuable.

4. The Theme or ISP Connected to the Set

LEGO experts know a little secret: licensing Star Wars saved LEGO from bankruptcy in 1999! Adding this popular IP to their lineup was so huge that LEGO quickly started adding more. Today, Harry Potter, Spiderman, Batman, Minecraft, Disney and many more IPs have been given the LEGO treatment. These sets, in many cases, are more valuable because they’re more coveted by collectors.

5. Sets with Rare Minifigures

The popularity of the minifigure can’t be exaggerated; it’s massive! Some folks only collect minifigures, especially since LEGO upped their quality and variety to amazing levels.

For LEGO investors, you should always be sure the minifigure is included when you buy a used set.  LEGO set #10123, Cloud City, is a great example. The original “Lando Calrissian” minifigure makes this set ridiculously valuable.

How to Determine the Value of a LEGO Set

  • Check the LEGO Set’s Number- Found on the box and instructions, the set number is perfect for determining its value.
  • Use Online Sources- There are many online sources of valuable information about LEGO . Here are a few of the best:
  • Join a LEGO Fan Group (LUG)- LEGO User Groups (LUGs) are found around the country. Not only can they be very helpful, but they’re also a lot of fun and LEGO camaraderie.
  • Search Prices on eBay- eBay is a major source of current LEGO values. As they say, a LEGO set is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. On eBay, you’ll see what’s been paid for a set lately, which can be a great guideline.

Where Can You Sell Your Valuable LEGO Sets?

Want to sell your LEGO and bank the profits? Below are the best places to do exactly that:

  • eBay
  • Facebook Marketplace
  • Craigslist
  • Bricklink

10 of the Most Valuable LEGO Sets

Below are 10 of the most valuable LEGO sets, listed with their original retail price and current (estimated) value.

  1. Cloud City #10123 $99.00 / $8200.00
  2. Monorail Airport Shuttle #6399    $200.00 / $4000.00
  3. Skull’s Eye Schooner #6286 $50.00 / $3500.00
  4. Market Street #10190 $110.00 / $2700.00
  5. UCS Millenium Falcon # 10179 $499.00 / $2400.00
  6. Death Star 2 # 10143 $270.00 / $2600.00
  7. Cafe orner #10182 $150.00 / $1700.00
  8. Imperial Star Destroyer #10030 $450.00 / $1200.00
  9. Taj Mahal #10189 $300.00 / $900.00
  10. Eiffel Tower # 10181     $200.00 / $800

Which is Best for Investing: Sealed or Open and Built?

A sealed LEGO set will always be more valuable than one that’s been opened and built (even if only once). Many older sets are very hard to find in a sealed box but they’re still valuable.

A stack of colorful LEGO bricks.

If you’re investing, sealed is best. If you’re a LEGO enthusiast who wants to also invest on the side, open and play!

Tips for Keeping LEGO Sets in Good Condition

To protect your valuable LEGO sets, storing them correctly is a must! Here’s how to keep all your sets in great condition:

1. Store LEGO sets in a Cool, Dry Place

  • Avoid heat and especially direct sunlight.
  • Don’t store LEGO in the attic or basement.
  • For a large collection, store your LEGO in a climate controlled storage unit.

2. Keep the Original Boxes and Instructions

  • These add a lot of value, especially if they’re in good shape.
  • Store boxes flat to avoid bending or tearing. (A mirror box is a great choice!)

3. Use Ziploc Bags

  • Keep sets together using labeled ziploc bags.
  • Place the instructions inside each bag for easy rebuilding later.

4. Don’t Mix LEGO Sets

  • Mixing parts makes it hard to rebuild or sell the full set.

5. Stack Sets Safely

  • Don’t stack too many (sealed) LEGO boxes on top of each other.
  • Use a shelving unit if you’re storing many LEGO sets in boxes.

Use NSA Storage for Your Collection

We hope the information provided today will help you find LEGO sets that are worth collecting, and how to store them for safe keeping. There’s no denying that some sets are truly valuable and worth seeking.

To store your LEGO in the best possible conditions, consider renting a storage unit from NSA Storage. Few other hobbies combine taste, tradition, knowledge, and investment opportunities like collecting wine does. Whether you collect for long-term value or simply for the enjoyment of a good glass, starting a wine collection can be tricky.

To help you get started on a great sip, NSA Storage put together the following guide to starting your own wine collection. In it you’ll find tips to help you get into your hobby.

What Makes Wine Collectible?

A woman looking at a bottle of wine in a liquor store aisle.

Before you get started, it’s important to know what makes wine collectible. More specifically, what makes a certain wine more collectible than another, not-so-collectible wine. Here are a few characteristics that will make one wine more collectible than another:

  • The Wine’s Age– The metaphor “like fine wine, it gets better with age” is said for a reason; older wines can be tastier, and tastier wines demand higher prices.
  • The Size of the Production or Batch– A popular wine made in a small batch can increase in value more quickly than wines made in large batches.
  • The Wine’s Vintage– Like many collectibles, wines from certain years are more valuable than others.
  • The Wine’s Region– The region where a wine’s made can affect its taste, body, etc. For that reason, wines from some areas of the world (i.e., regions) are more collectible than others.
  • The Winery’s Reputation– Wines from a famous or beloved vineyard are more likely to increase in value than wines from one that is unknown or new.

How to Start a Wine Collection: Step-by-Step

If you follow the steps below, you’ll make better decisions and grow a more valuable, interesting, and delicious wine collection:

Step 1: Set a Goal

When you start, ask yourself this question: why do you want to collect wine? For fun? As an investment? To have good wine around at all times? Something else? Whatever your answer happens to be, focus on that when collecting your wine. Your goal should guide all of your buying decisions.

Step 2: Do Your Due Diligence

There’s a lot of helpful information about wine collecting out there today, including on Google, Youtube, and other social media outlets. Experts suggest using them all to educate yourself about any wines you desire for your collection, including:

  • Wine magazines
  • Wine websites
  • Books by wine experts
  • Online forums
  • YouTube Videos
  • Wine-centric Facebook groups

Step 3: Set a Budget Before Starting

No matter what you collect as a hobby, setting a budget is important. That way, you won’t overspend and let your hobby take over your life, at least financially.

The thing about wine is that a bottle can range from ten dollars to thousands of dollars per bottle. You could easily spend a few thousand dollars and still have a rather small collection. On the other hand, if you spend wisely on more affordable bottles, you could grow a nice collection for a reasonable cost.

In short, choosing and sticking to a budget before starting your wine collection is highly recommended. If anything, it could prevent you from making decisions that negatively affect your finances.

Step 4: Start Small

Wine collections come in many different sizes. When you’re just starting, yours is undoubtedly going to be small compared to others. Don’t worry about that. Just begin with a selection of bottles that you’ve researched and are confident will age well.

For example, purchase a case of wine you’ve enjoyed from a reputable winery you visited. (They often sell at a discount when you buy directly from them after a tasting!) You can also get a bottle or two regularly from your local wine store expert who lets you know when something good arrives.

Before you know it, with a little bit of care and effort, you’ll be a wine collector!

Step 5: Buy Wine from Trusted Sources

Creating a wine collection takes knowledge, effort, time and, most importantly, trusted sources. People and organizations who know their wines intimately and will lead you in the right direction. Some of the best trusted sources when creating a wine collection include:

Rows of grape vines in a field at a winery.
  • Reputable, local wine stores
  • Wineries
  • Online wine marketplaces
  • Other wine collectors

Where Can You Find Wines that are Collectible

If you’re just starting, you might think the only place you can buy wine is from a liquor store or a winery. The fact is, though, that you can find collectible wines at many other places. They include:

  • Auctions- Online and in person auctions are a great place to find rare or vintage bottles of wine.
  • Wine Clubs- Many cities and towns have wine clubs that offer collectible bottles you won’t find in regular retail stores.
  • Estate Sales- Estate sales are a great place to find older and often vintage wines at excellent prices.
  • Wine Tastings- Wine tastings are a great place to find wine and also a lot of fun! You’ll meet the wine makers, taste different wines and get answers to your most important collecting questions.
  • Winery Direct- Many vineyards allow you to buy directly from them through winery direct. If you find one you like and trust, it’s an easy, more secure way to get bottles for your collection.

Tips for Storing a Wine Collection

Like many collectibles, it’s very important that you store your wine correctly. If you don’t, you can ruin even the best bottle and destroy your investment at the same time. Below or a few top tips for storing your wine collection correctly so that it stays in pristine, and tasty, condition:

  • Always store your wine between 55°F and 58°F.
  • Prevent any sudden heat or temperature changes that can affect your wine. Storing in the attic, for example, is not a good idea.
  • Never store wine in direct sunlight or near heat sources like an oven or furnace.
  • Keep the humidity where you store your wine between 60% and 70%. If it’s too dry, your corks will shrink. If it’s too humid, your wine labels may peel off.
  • Store your wine where it’s always dark, quiet, and cool.
  • Don’t store your wine next to any type of machine that vibrates. For example example, a washing machine, dishwasher, or dryer

Shopping for new clothes can be fun. Today, however, with the increasing numbers of thrift stores, Goodwill, and other vendors, many Americans go out shopping for used clothes, especially if they’re vintage. Like a type of modern treasure hunt, searching for vintage clothes can be exciting and rewarding. The question many have, though, is how to identify vintage clothes. After all, to most folks, one pair of jeans looks pretty much like every other pair of jeans.

If you’re interested in collecting and wearing vintage clothes, but don’t know how to identify them, this article is for you! It’s all about identifying and storing valuable vintage clothes, brought to you by NSA Storage! To outfit yourself in the far out, funky, and financially valuable looks of the past, read on!

What Are Vintage Clothes?

Experts define vintage clothes as any article of clothing that is at least 20 years old. Today, that includes any clothing made before the early 2000s to as far back as the 1920s and beyond.

An outdoor rack of clothes with a sign pointing toward the storefront that says "vintage."

Of course, as with almost any product, not every article of old clothing is valuable. There are certain things that take an ordinary piece of clothing and, with time and care, turn it into something “vintage”. For example:

  • Vintage clothes are often made with higher quality fabrics and a higher level of craftsmanship
  • Some of the most valuable vintage clothing items are one-of-a-kind or were made by a specific designer
  • Specific manufacturer labels, especially if the company no longer exists, can turn a regular article of clothing into something vintage
  • Vintage clothing often has unique features not found on today’s bulk-made clothing (See below.)

Top 4 Tips for Identifying Vintage Clothes

The tips below are all used by vintage clothing aficionados and can be invaluable for identifying the most valuable pieces.

1. Check the Tag

By far the easiest way to determine if a piece of clothing is vintage is to check the tag. Of course, not all articles of clothing will have tags, but most will. When it does, look for these telltale signs:

  • Older fonts and logos are a telltale sign that something is vintage.
  • A “Made in USA” tag can indicate vintage, but not always.
  • A Logo from a clothing company that no longer exists. (Halston, Jonathan Logan, Merry Hull, Norma Kamali, etc.)
  • Union labels from the 1950s through the 1980s.

Here are a few more vintage brands that are coveted by collectors and often more valuable:

  • Chanel
  • Pendleton
  • Dior
  • ILGWU (International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union)
  • Coach
  • Levi’s
  • Gunne Sax by Jessica McLintock
  • I. Magnin
  • Evan Piccone
  • Butt Knit
  • Young Eduardian

2. Look Closely and Feel the Fabric

For hobbyists and experts alike, one of the easiest ways to detect a vintage clothing piece is simply to feel the fabric. Most, but not all, vintage clothing was made with real, organic materials that are heavier, more textured, and less stretchy than today’s clothing. Some of the most sought-after fabrics include these classics:

  • Linen– Light and airy, linen is cool to the touch and even a bit rough at first. With time, it becomes softer.
  • Thick, heavy and super-warm, wool can be itchy if it’s not a fine grade like Merino wool.
  • Silk, which is, as you might imagine, silky smooth. It’s also cool to the touch but warms quickly, and can feel slippery.
  • The classic, 100% cotton, is soft and warm to the touch, and gets softer with age and washing.

3. Check Out the Stitching

Most people don’t look closely, if at all, at the stitching of their clothes. Experts, though, look very closely, as the stitching can be a dead giveaway to whether a piece is vintage or not; some even bring a magnifying glass to get a better look.

Here are a few of the stitches and other signs that you’ll find on many vintage clothing pieces:

  • Unique buttons and other baubles
  • Heavy-duty metal zippers
  • Double seams
  • Hand-sewn (and not 100% perfect) finishes. Imperfect but well-sewn vintage clothes can often be more valuable!

4. Examine the Style and Cut

One easy way to determine if clothing is vintage is to look at its style and cut. Clothing from the 1960s will look very different when compared to clothing from the ’80s because different styles were popular and fashionable. To be a top collector of vintage clothing, you need to know what these changes were, and how to spot them.

A group of young adults wearing vintage clothes, likely from the early 1990s.

With practice, you’ll be able to quickly tell a 1940s tailored, hourglass skirt from a 1990s grunge, denim skirt! Below are the 5 biggest time-periods in fashion from the 1940s onward, and their particular styles and cuts:

  1. 1920s-1930s: Drop waist dresses, 3-piece suits, cloche hats, sleeveless cuts
  2. 1940s-50s: Finely tailored, hourglass cuts, fuller skirts
  3. 1960s: The “Mod” style, shift dresses, bright, bold patterns
  4. 1970s: Bell-bottoms, earthy colors, flowing, lightweight fabrics
  5. 1980s: Bold, bright colors, overly-large shoulder pads, oversized blazers, bigger cuts
  6. 1990s: Minimalist cuts, grunge, worn-out looks, denim everything

The Best Places to Find Vintage Clothing

If you’re just starting your vintage clothing hobby and need to know where to look, the list below will be very helpful:

  • Goodwill. This nationwide organization gets donations from millions of people every day. Even better, their prices are very reasonable.
  • Thrift stores. Almost Every town in America has at least one thrift store, if not several. Thrift stores can be a treasure trove for vintage clothing collectors.
  • Garage sales. An annual right of spring, you can find all sorts of amazing clothing at local garage sales.
  • Flea markets. Depending on where you live, your local flea market might be a great place to search.
  • eBay and Facebook Marketplace. These two online Resellers, as well as several others, can be fantastic. Facebook Marketplace in particular can put you in touch with folks right in your town selling their vintage clothes.

Top Tips for Storing Vintage Clothes

If you have a few articles of vintage clothing, storing them in your closet at home is easiest. There they should be dry, cool and out of the sun, which is perfect.

If you have a large collection of vintage clothing, however, storing it correctly is important. Like anything, if not stored correctly, vintage clothing can degrade and deteriorate, often to the point where it’s no longer valuable.

Below are some top tips for storing vintage clothes to make sure they stay in pristine condition, long-term:

  • Clean and Dry Everything Well– Before storing any vintage clothes, be sure to clean them and dry them well. You need to remove anything that could cause a stain or discoloration. Plus, your clothes should be bone dry because any trapped moisture could create mold or mildew that could ruin them.
  • Don’t Pack Your Vintage Clothing Too Tightly– If you’re moving, you can pack clothing tightly because you will be taking it back out of the boxes in a few days. However, with vintage clothing, you should pack it much more loosely in the boxes or containers you use. That way, the fabric won’t get wrinkled or damaged, sometimes permanently, while stored.
  • Use Top-Quality Hangers– Experts recommend using wooden or padded hangers for hanging vintage clothes.
  • Consider Climate-Controlled Storage– If you have a genuinely large collection of vintage clothing, storing it in a climate-controlled storage unit is recommended. These specialized storage units maintain a stable temperature and humidity throughout the year. That adds an extra layer of protection to keep your vintage clothing collection in pristine condition, especially long-term.
  • Use Acid-Free Tissue Paper– With vintage clothing that you will fold, use acid free tissue paper between each fold for extra protection.
  • Don’t use Plastic Containers or Bags– While plastic might keep dirt and other junk off of your clothing, it also traps in moisture. That’s the last thing you want since, as we know, moisture can cause mold and mildew. Garment bags or wardrobe boxes are a better choice.

Ever since the first commercially successful video game, “Pong”, was released in 1972 by Atari, people have been avidly collecting these fun, fantastical games. Today, vintage video games are a true collecting niche, with some folks amassing large, valuable collections.

Whether you’ve just started collecting or have been enjoying it for years, there are two questions many vintage video game collectors have. The first is how to identify the most valuable video games to buy and collect. The second is how to store vintage video games so that they stay in pristine condition for years to come.

If you’re asking those same questions, the good news is that the answers are down below! Read on to find out how to identify and store retro video games. It’s all brought to you by the storage specialists at NSA Storage!

1. Search for Vintage Games in the Right Spots

You can find vintage video games online quite easily. Just go to eBay or other online portals. However, you’re likely to pay a premium for these as most sellers know their value. To find vintage video games at reasonable, or even cheap, prices, be sure to look in the right spots, including:

  • Thrift Stores and Pawn Shops
  • Garage Sales
  • Estate Sales
  • Flea Markets
  • Gaming CONs
  • Online Forums
  • Retro Video Game Stores

2. Improve Your Video Game Knowledge

Improving your vintage video game knowledge is highly recommended before you start buying and collecting. The more you know, the better choices you’ll make when buying. Below are a few places you can start:

  • YouTube
  • Online Price Guides
  • Video Game Collecting Books and Guides
  • Online Collecting Communities
  • Conventions
  • Retro Game Stores
  • Video Game Collector Websites and Blogs

3. Check the Age of the Video Game

The word “vintage” can mean different things for different people. When it comes to video games, vintage usually includes the following years:

A vintage box TV set with a 70s style video game on it.
  • Atari 2600 (1977 – 1992)
  • NES (1985 – 1995)
  • Sega Genesis (1988 – 1997)

Video games from the 1980s and 1990s are some of the most sought after. This is the time period when video games and video game consoles really took off in popularity. Also, generally speaking, most collectors consider video games made before the year 2000 as “vintage”.

4. Inspect the Video Game Thoroughly

As with any collectible, video games in good condition are worth more than those in poor condition. The better the condition, the more valuable the video game will be. What you want to look for includes:

  • The game works without any problems or glitches
  • The game cartridge itself has minimal scratches and outer damage
  • The cartridge label is in good, clean, undamaged condition

5. Look for Complete Games

A rare, vintage video game cartridge will usually be valuable on its own. However, the same rare cartridge with the original box and manual will be much more valuable.

The most valuable retro video games? Those are the ones that are in the box and sealed. If you can find one of those, you’ve got the cream of the crop! Collectors call this a “CIB”, which stands for “Complete In Box”.

6. Look for First Releases

Like comic books, baseball cards, and other collectibles, the first release of a video game is usually the most valuable. To determine if a video game is the first release, look for:

  • The product code, which should be on the cartridge label
  • The cover art; colors, styles, and so forth can help you identify a first release.
  • Limited edition stickers and other identifying features

How To Store Vintage Video Games

A stack of plastic video game cases.

One of the most important things to do when you collect vintage video games is store them correctly. Improperly stored video games can degrade and become unusable, which will greatly impact their value.

Below are some top vintage video game storage tips to help you keep yours in mint condition:

  • Use Plastic Cases– Several manufacturers make plastic game cartridge cases and covers that will protect your games from dirt, scratches, dust, etc.
  • Store Video Games in a Cool, Dry, Dark Place– Sunlight and moisture are the enemies of your video game collection. Be sure to store them in a cool, dry, dark place for the best protection.
  • Store Game Boxes Upright (Like Books)– Don’t stack video game boxes flat as they might get crushed over time. Store them upright, like you would with a book collection.
  • For Large Video Game Collections, Consider Climate-Controlled Storage– Climate controlled storage units are specialized to control the internal conditions of the unit. For delicate electronics like video game cartridges, this type of storage is typically the best. That’s especially true for large vintage video game collections.

How To Pack Vintage Video Games

If you have a large video game collection and want to pack them in boxes before storage, these tips will help:

  • Wrap each video game separately in bubble wrap or clean packing paper.
  • Don’t overpack your video games. This can damage the box and even the cartridge. Keep them relatively loose.
  • Use heavy duty cardboard boxes.
  • Using medium sized plastic bins will protect your video games from moisture.
  • Label all of your boxes as well so that you can find a particular game if you need it.

You might be surprised to learn that stamp collecting is one of the oldest hobbies in the world. It’s been popular ever since 1840, when the first postage stamp featured a profile of Great Britain’s Queen Victoria. Today, people collect stamps for many different reasons. Some do it for the history, while others do it for fun or the thrill of the hunt. The one question most collectors have no matter why they collect, however, is this: is my stamp collection valuable?

To help you find out, NSA Storage put together this fact-filled article that’s loaded with actionable information. Whether you’ve been stamp collecting for years or just inherited a stamp collection of your own, the info below will help you figure out what it’s worth. Read on to find out more and also learn why the proper stamp collection storage is important.

How To Tell if Your Stamp Collection is Valuable

As with all things we humans collect, some stamps are more valuable than others. Some extremely rare and unique stamps can be worth millions, but the average stamp is usually worth its regular postage price. Being able to tell the difference is a valuable skill for stamp collectors. To do that, here are 4 excellent tips:

  1. Check the Age of the Stamp
  • The older the stamp, the more valuable it’s likely to be.
  • Stamps printed before 1950 are in very high demand.
  • Any stamp from the 1800s will be extremely valuable simply because of its rarity.
  1. Look Closely at the Stamp’s Condition
  • Like most collectibles, a stamp in perfect condition is worth more than a stamp with nicks, tears, blotches, and other imperfections.
  • Use a magnifying glass or other magnification device to look closely at any stamp you might purchase.
  1. Search for Stamps that are Rare, Imperfect, or Unique
  • Rare stamps, as you might imagine, are worth more than everyday stamps.
  • Ironically, some stamps with printing errors are often worth more than their correctly printed counterparts.
  • Limited edition stamps will often (but not always) become more valuable with time.
  1. Check to See if Your Stamp is Postmarked (or Not)
  • Another interesting fact about stamp collecting is that an unused stamp is often worth more than one with a postmark.
  • Postmark or not, extremely rare stamps are just as valuable.
  1. Where Was the Stamp Printed?
  • Many collectible stamps were printed in the United Kingdom and other European countries. These are often more valuable than stamps from the United States because they’re older.
  • Colonial American stamps from the 1800s are also highly collectible and valuable.

How to Get Your Stamp Collection Appraised

One of the best ways to find out if your stamp collection is valuable is to have it appraised by an expert. If you think your stamp collection might be worth more than just a few dollars, contact these experts to find out:

  • A Local Stamp Dealer in Your Area– You can find stamp dealers online quite easily. Then, you can bring your stamps over, have them professionally examined and inspected, and get a rough estimate of their value.
  • A Professional Stamp Appraiser– If you have a large or rare collection of stamps, a professional appraiser is your best bet. These are men and women who have many years of experience in the stamp collecting field. Be prepared, however, as most will charge you a relatively steep fee for the service.
  • A Stamp Collecting Club– If you have a stamp collecting club in your area you’re in luck! These clubs often have expert appraisers as members. At the very least, they can let you know what to look for and help you identify any valuable stamps you might own.
  • Online Stamp Resources– There are several websites where you can get help estimating the value of your stamp collection. They include Stamp World, Mystic Stamp Company, and even eBay. On eBay you can compare your stamps with similar stamps being sold to get an accurate estimate of their value.

Examples of Valuable Stamps

In the animals of stamp collecting, some stamps have left an indelible mark. Below are three of the most famous examples of stamps in the world:

  1. The Inverted Jenny (U.S.)- This unique stamp has a printing error: the plane on the stamp is flying upside-down! That makes it worth over $1 million.
  2. British Guiana 1c Magenta – This is the world’s most valuable stamp, which was sold for over $8 million!
  3. Blue Military Stamp of 1868 (Japan) – This is a rare and highly sought after stamp with a very high value.

Tips for Stamp Storage

Unlike some collectibles, stamps are quite fragile. They can easily be damaged or even destroyed by moisture, dust, dirt, and other debris. For that reason, storing them correctly is important so that they continue to increase in value.

Below we’ve listed some of the top tips for stamp storage to help you keep your collection in pristine condition.

  • Use Stamp Albums– Stamp albums help you keep your stamps flat as well as clean. They also help you organize them into types, groupings, years, etc. Buy acid free stamp albums to prevent damage to your stamps.
  • Don’t Use Plastic Bags– Plastic bags can trap moisture that causes stamps to stick. Instead, use stamp sleeves or the aforementioned albums.
  • Keep Your Stamps in a Cool, Dry Place– No matter what you used to store your stamps, always store them in a cool, dry place. That means no attics or basements, which are high in humidity and heat, respectively, that can destroy your precious stamps.
  • Never Leave Your Stamps Exposed to Sunlight (Even Indirect Sunlight)– Sunlight is the enemy of any stamp collection and should be avoided at all costs.
  • Don’t Handle Your Stamps Without Using Lightweight Gloves– The oils on your hands and fingers can damage your stamps. Thin, lightweight gloves should always be used, especially with your most valuable stamps.

Use Climate Controlled Storage For Your Stamp Collection

If your stamp collection is large and valuable, and you need to store it somewhere safe and secure, a climate controlled storage unit is your best choice. These specialized storage units keep the temperature and humidity stable throughout the year, which is exactly what your stamps need. Some of the benefits of a climate controlled self storage unit include:

  • Protection from humidity and temperature swings
  • Safety from theft, damage, prying hands, etc.
  • You can organize your stamp collection any way you like in your storage unit. This can make your hobby even more fun and interesting.

Final Stamp of Approval

Collecting stamps is an interesting, satisfying hobby, no doubt. We hope the information provided today will empower you to figure out just how valuable your stamp collection might be. At the end of the day, however, most stamp collectors agree that the hobby itself is more than enough reward.

At NSA Storage, we help people with large stamp collections to store there easily, safely and securely. That includes our climate controlled storage units, which are highly recommended for large, valuable stamp collections. You can easily reserve a storage unit online for your stamp collection or anything else you need or want to store. Once you’re done, your storage unit will be ready to store every stamp in your collection!

You’ll find them in virtually every American home; jewelry and metal heirlooms that hold both sentimental and financial value. Some are relatively new, given by family and friends as gifts or purchased for investment purposes. Others have been passed down from one generation to the next, reminders of people and times long past. Whether new or many years old, storing jewelry and metal heirlooms correctly is very important. Improperly stored, these metal trinkets, tchotchkes, and baubles can corrode, tarnish, and be severely damaged.

The good news is that storing jewelry and other metal heirlooms correctly is relatively easy. In fact, below you’ll find seven best practices for doing just that, brought to you by the storage specialists at NSA Storage. To learn them all and protect your precious jewelry and heirlooms, keep reading further!

1. The Correct Storage Environment is Key

One of the most important facts about metal pieces is that they can corrode easily. The question is, how does that corrosion occur? The answer: when jewelry and heirlooms aren’t stored in the correct environment.

If you’re storing at home, a dry, dark place is the best choice. Depending on how many items you have, you might also consider getting a dehumidifier for even more protection.

Also, keeping your heirlooms and jewelry out of high humidity areas is important. That means no storing them in your basement or bathroom, where humidity can often be quite high.

If you rent a storage unit, and you have a lot of metal heirlooms, a climate-controlled storage unit is recommended. These specialized storage units keep the humidity and temperature stable throughout the year, which can prevent damage.

2. Separate Every Piece to Avoid Damage

In many homes you’ll find jewelry and heirlooms stored together willy-nilly in a box. While this might be convenient, it’s not a great choice if you want to protect them from damage. Jewelry and heirlooms banging together in a box can cause scratches, scuffs, chips, and other damage.

To prevent this damage, here are a few excellent storage tips for your metal heirlooms and jewelry:

  • Store each item in a felt-lined jewelry box or a small, soft pouch.
  • If you have gold or silver chains, keep them unclasped so that they don’t tangle.
  • You can use anti-tarnish strips or cloth to prevent tarnishing.
  • If you have a large collection, use several smaller storage containers instead of one large one.

3. Choose the Correct Storage Containers for Storing Jewelry

If you store your heirlooms and metal jewelry at home, be sure to choose the right storage container. We mentioned earlier that a felt-lined jewelry box is a good choice. We would also suggest that you use airtight containers because air can cause metal to oxidize.

Another excellent idea when storing jewelry and other metal heirlooms is to put silica gel packets in the container. These packets, which you’ll often find in new shoe and sneaker boxes, absorb damage-causing moisture.

Another excellent idea is to use soft pouches to protect any delicate gemstones in your heirlooms or jewelry. Plus, acid free tissue paper is a great choice, as the acid in regular paper can—you guessed it—cause damage.

One thing you definitely want to avoid is storing your jewelry in cardboard or newspaper. The reason why is that both can contain harmful chemicals which can damage your precious pieces.

4. Clean and Inspect Your Jewelry and Heirlooms Regularly

Oil, dirt, water and other stuff can damage, and even ruin, metal jewelry and heirlooms. That makes cleaning your jewelry before storage an important step. By removing oil, dirt and so forth, you ensure that they won’t be able to cause damage.

Speaking of preventing damage, inspecting your jewelry and heirlooms regularly is a good idea. That way, if corrosion or other damage is starting, you can stop it before it becomes extreme.

5. Keep Light and Humidity Levels Low

We’ve spoken already about humidity levels and how they should be kept as low as possible to protect your precious trinkets. It’s also recommended that you keep light levels low as UV light can weaken metal over time.

One of the best places at home to store your jewelry and heirlooms is in a closet. Most closets have very low humidity and light levels, which makes them the perfect storage place. For larger collections of heirlooms and jewelry, a climate controlled storage unit is also recommended.

6. Use Vacuum-Sealed Storage Bags

If you have a lot of silver and brass items, vacuum sealed bags are an excellent choice. These bags will prevent moisture from causing oxidation and tarnish. Not only will that protect your valuables but also reduce the time and energy needed to remove any tarnish buildup.

Vacuum sealed storage bags come in several different sizes and are very convenient. You can also use them for other items in your home including clothes, collectibles, photos, and more.

7. Store Your Valuables in a Secure Spot

While it might not protect them from damage, storing your metal heirlooms and jewelry in a secure spot is crucial. The fact is, since they’re valuable, these items are common targets for theft.

If you store them at home, experts recommend purchasing a safe and putting it in a secure location. If you choose to store in a storage unit, be sure to find a storage facility that provides excellent security.

Find an NSA Storage Unit Near You!

Precious family heirlooms and jewelry are a connection to the past and the future. Some are as small as a ring while others can be quite large, like a silver serving plate or candelabra. Whatever they are, storing them correctly, as we’ve seen, can keep them in pristine condition.

At NSA Storage, we aim to store your items with the utmost care. Our storage units are clean, safe, and secure, and you can arrange them anyway you like. In fact, many retail jewelry stores use storage units for their overstock.

Whatever you choose, we hope that the information provided today will empower you to perfectly protect your metal heirlooms and jewelry. That way, they will provide pleasure and memories for many years to come. Find storage units near you today at NSA Storage!

When it comes to collecting, some items are more popular than others. One of the most popular is comic books, a beloved collecting hobby for millions of Americans. Ever since the first superhero donned a cape, mask, and tights, comic books have been incredibly popular.

That popularity has made some comic books incredibly valuable and coveted. The question many collectors have, though, is which of their comic books is the most valuable. While some may be worth a literal fortune, most comic books aren’t worth much more than their original price.

If you’re wondering which of your beloved books is valuable, the information below should be quite helpful. It’s 5 ways to know which comic books are the most valuable, brought to you by NSA Storage. Read on to find out more!

What Makes a Comic Book Valuable?

There’s no denying that certain factors can make one comic book much more valuable than another. Below we take a look at 5 of those factors and how to use them to your advantage.

1. The Age and Rarity of the Comic Book

One of the easiest and most common methods of determining a comic book’s value is its age and rarity. For example, even though Superman is incredibly popular, most Superman books aren’t extremely valuable. However, Superman comics from the Golden Age (1938 – 1956) and Silver Age (1956 – 1970) of comics are extremely valuable.

The rarity of a comic book also plays a significant role in its value. Limited print runs of a comic are usually more valuable, as are special editions. (TMNT is a perfect example of this, as we’ll see below.) A comic book that was recalled for some reason, as you might imagine, can also significantly increase its value.

2. The Condition of the Comic Book

As with any collectible, the condition of a comic book can significantly impact its value. This is also known as its “grade.” A golden age Hawkman comic book in excellent condition will be much more valuable than one that’s faded, has torn pages, or has been otherwise damaged.

Even small amounts of damage like a crease, page tear, or discoloration can reduce a book’s value. How do you determine a comic book’s “grade”? The best way is to use the Certified Guaranty Company’s (CGC) grading scale. It ranges from 0.5, which is “poor”, to 10, which is “jem mint” condition. In short, the better the condition, the more valuable a comic book will be.

3. Comic Books that Feature Significant Events and Appearances

Apart from condition, one factor that greatly increases a comic book’s value is if it features significant events or appearances. For example, the first appearance of Spider-Man, which was Amazing Fantasy #15 in 1962, is incredibly valuable!

The same can be said for the first appearance of Batman, which was in 1939 in Detective Comics #27. Superman’s first appearance, which was in Action Comics #1 in 1938, Is ridiculously valuable as you might imagine.

In 1938, for example, the retail price of Action Comics #1 was 10 cents! In 2014, however, a near-mint copy sold for $3.2 million! Another copy of this incredibly rare comic book sold for $3.55 million in 2022!

Other comics over the years that have featured significant events and appearances are also quite valuable. They include, for example, the first appearance of Wolverine and Deadpool. The 1st-printing of the Death of Superman comic book in the early 1990s Is also very valuable today.

4. The Publishers and Print of the Comic

While it doesn’t play a huge role in their value, the publisher and print of a comic book can impact its value. For example, Marvel and DC are two of the most popular comic book brands in the world. Many of their titles are valuable because their superheroes are very popular.

More important than the publisher, however, is the print of the comic book. The first printing is almost always more valuable than later printings. Take the first printing of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, for example, which was in May of 1984. Considering a measly 3,275 copies were printed and self-published, this particular comic is incredibly valuable! (By the way, any print of the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book is valuable today!)

5. Popularity Rules

Yes, age and rarity definitely affect a comic book’s value. However, as with many things, popularity can also be a significant factor. If a fan favorite character is in your comic book, or a significant storyline, it can easily raise its value.

Comic books that are based on a movie adaptation or TV series can also be quite valuable. Star Wars #1 from Marvel is very lucrative thanks to the rabid Star Wars fan base.

Again, it depends on the popularity of the characters and storylines. Right now, for example, Deadpool and Wolverine comics are extremely popular due to their blockbuster movie from 2024. If you have any Deadpool or Wolverine comics you want to sell, now would likely be the best time to do it!

How To Determine the Value of a Comic Book

There are basically 4 ways to determine if a comic book is valuable or not. They include the following;

  1. Get the comic appraised by a professional from the CGC. Be aware that there is typically a cost to do this.
  2. Ask for help at your local comic book shop. Many offer free appraisals and purchase large collections.
  3. Do your research. It’s easy to go to Overstreet Price Guide or GoCollect to get insight on the value of most comic books.
  4. Take a look at recent sales. If a copy of a comic you own recently sold for big bucks, yours might be worth the same amount.

How To Store Comic Books to Preserve Their Value

As with any collectible, storing your comic books correctly is critically important. If you don’t, they can be damaged or destroyed, which will greatly lower their value. Below are several methods you can use to store your comic books correctly and ensure they stay in mint condition.

  • Store Your Comics Upright- All comic books should be stored standing on their edge to prevent warping.
  • Maintain the Proper Humidity and Temperature- Humidity and extreme temperatures can destroy comic books quickly. Make sure that yours stay within 40 to 50% humidity and between 50 and 65°F.
  • Use Bags and Backing Boards- Protective bags and backing boards are 2 of the best ways to keep your comics in pristine condition.
  • Consider a Climate Controlled Self-Storage Unit- A storage unit that’s climate controlled will keep the humidity and temperature stable throughout the year.
