Moving to California for work, a change of scenery, or to get a new career started? If so, and you haven’t settled on a city yet, we suggest you consider lovely Bakersfield, California. Bakersfield is a great choice for many reasons, which has made it a fast-growing city.

To prove Bakersfield is a fantastic town, the storage specialists at SecurCare put together the following article. It’s the seven best things about living in Bakersfield, California! There’s a lot of excellent information below we hope will help with your California city decision-making process. If California is on your radar, and you’d like to discover more about Bakersfield, read on!

1. Bakersfield has Great Weather All Year

One of the very best things about living in Bakersfield, California, is that it has a Mediterranean climate. That means you’ll have hot, but not sweltering hot summers, and mild, snow-free winters. Here are a few of the other benefits you’ll receive, weather-wise, living in Bakersfield:

  • Over 270 sunny days every year, which means Bakersfield is perfect for outdoor activities year-round.
  • Mild winters that only last for a few weeks, with no snow or extreme cold.
  • An extra-long growing season which is perfect for farmers and amateur gardeners.

Yes, summers in Bakersfield can be hot, but all of the homes and businesses have air-conditioning. Still, you’ll be able to spend more days outside in Bakersfield than in many other American cities.

2. The Job Market in Bakersfield is Thriving

Like several California cities, Bakersfield has a thriving job market. The economy is strong and diverse and offers opportunities in several industries including:

  • Agriculture– Bakersfield has one of the biggest farming regions in all of California.
  • Oil and energy-The city is a major hub for oil production in the United States
  • Healthcare– There are several large hospitals offering stable employment to healthcare workers. There are also many medical centers in Bakersfield.

3. There are Lots of Outdoor Activities to Enjoy in Bakersfield

We already mentioned that the weather in Bakersfield is great for those who like life outdoors. There’s even more good news as Bakersfield is practically overflowing with outdoor activity opportunities.

From camping and fishing to hiking, biking, climbing, whitewater rafting, and more, you’ll find it here. Bakersfield is truly an outdoor adventurer’s dream city. Below are a few of the best locations for outdoor activities in the surrounding area, including:

  • The Kern River– This is a prime whitewater rafting area that is also perfect for picnicking and fishing.
  • Sequoia National Forest– If breathtaking natural beauty makes you feel all warm and fuzzy, you’ll be visiting Sequoia National Forest often.
  • Hart Memorail Park– A local favorite, this park is the perfect place for a relaxing walk at the end of the long day.

4. The Cuisine in Bakersfield is A Step Above

Although it’s not the biggest city in California, Bakersfield has a growing food scene. The city brings together a mix of classic and modern dining options for an exceptional dining experience. Some of the treats for your taste buds in Bakersfield include:

  • Authentic Mexican food– Locals will tell you that Bakersfield has some of the best tacos and burritos in California.

As you can see, whether you’re into casual dining or something more upscale, you’ll find plenty of choices in Bakersfield.

5. Bakersfield is More Affordable than Many California Cities

Compared to California cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles, Bakersfield is a homeowner’s dream. Housing costs are lower, including home prices and rent, and often significantly lower than many other California cities.

Utility bills in Bakersfield are also quite reasonable. The reason why is simple: the warm, dry Mediterranean climate keeps heating costs low in winter. It also helps to lower cooling costs in summer.

Lastly, everyday expenses in Bakersfield are a bit more budget friendly than most. That includes groceries, utilities, and entertainment prices. All are lower than some of the larger metro areas in the state.

6. There’s a Palpable Sense of Community in Bakersfield

One thing many Americans long for are the days when our towns, cities, and communities were close knit and connected. In Bakersfield, that word-of-mouth community spirit is still alive and well.

There’s a strong sense of community in the city that you’ll feel as soon as you arrive. Folks are friendlier, volunteers are plentiful, and social services are widely available. If giving and volunteering are part of your nature, Bakersfield will be perfect for you.

Rich in history and culture, Kentucky is a state with breathtaking natural beauty. It’s also one of the best places in the United States for fans of horse racing, outdoor adventures, and bourbon. In other words, Kentucky is a beautiful place to visit, with many excellent amenities and attractions. There are several of the best top bourbon distilleries in Louisville, also. The Urban Bourbon Trail is the best way to discover more about them and the adult beverages they create.

Then there’s the world famous Kentucky Derby, held at Churchill Downs every May. This fast and furious horse race is the pride and joy of Kentucky! Lastly, there’s the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory. If you’re a fan of baseball, this is a must see attraction in Louisville!

Most people don’t realize that Fort Knox is not just a fort but an actual city in Kentucky. Known for its rich military history, Fort Knox also has several important US landmarks. They include the United States Bullion Depository, which holds a major portion of the gold reserves in the United States.

There’s also the George Patton Museum, where you can learn all about this cantankerous but brilliant U.S. military leader. If you’re more of an outdoor adventure fan, Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area is a great spot. There you’ll find camping, fishing, hiking and more to enjoy with your family.

3. Bowling Green

One of the coolest things about Bowling Green is that it’s the home of the National Corvette Museum. For America’s favorite sports car, that’s quite an honor!

The inside of Mammoth Caves, lit by a single lantern.

Bowling Green also boasts the world’s longest cave system. That would be Mammoth Cave National Park, which provides guided tours throughout the year for visitors. If seeing what goes on underneath your feet sounds neat, beat a path to this fantastic park.

4. Lexington

We’ve talked about how Louisville, Kentucky, holds the world famous Kentucky Derby every year. Some of the horses that race there come from Lexington, where Kentucky Horse Park is located. This is a working horse farm as well as a museum that’s dedicated to the history of our equine friends.

Lexington is also home of the distillery district, which is a hub for lovers of adult beverages, specifically bourbon. You’ll find several distilleries in Lexington as well as restaurants dedicated to serving the best bourbons, with fantastic entertainment options.

Plan Ahead for Your Trip To Colorado Springs

One of our most valuable tips when planning a trip is to plan ahead. That’s especially true for Colorado Springs as several factors will impact your trip to this fine city. They include the time of year, the weather, and the activities you want to enjoy.

For example, visiting Colorado Springs to hike and bike is best done in summer. Skiing and snowboarding? It’s no surprise that these activities, and several others, are best in the winter. Below are the best activities to enjoy In Colorado Springs throughout the year, listed with their respective seasons.

Summer (June through August)

  • Biking and Hiking- The warm temperatures in summer allow you to bike and hike to your heart’s content! One of the best trails is Barr Trail which leads up to stunning Pikes Peak!
  • Cultural Events- The Colorado Springs Labor Day Lift Off is a hot air balloon festival that shouldn’t be missed in summer! There’s also the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb that features cars and motorcycles climbing to the summit!
  • White Water Rafting- If whitewater rafting floats your proverbial boat, the Arkansas River will provide all of the thrills you’re looking for!

Fall (September through November)

  • Picking Apples- Colorado Springs boasts several beautiful apple orchards. There you can pick as many apples as you like and enjoy some fresh apple cider with the whole family.
  • Oktoberfest Events- One of the best Oktoberfests in the United States is right here in Colorado Springs.
  • Scenic Drives- For breathtaking views and vibrant fall foliage, point your car in the direction of the Gold Belt Tour Scenic Byway!

Winter (December through February)

  • Snowboarding and Skiing- There’s no doubt that Colorado Springs is well known for its amazing snowboarding and skiing. Winter is the best time to get your powder on around here!
  • Cheyenne Mountain Zoo- When the temperature has plummeted but you’re still looking for a fun activity, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is a great choice. Many of their exhibits and attractions are indoors where it’s cozy and warm. Plus, it’s the only mountain zoo in the United States, with over 750 amazing animals. You can even feed the giraffes!
  • The US Olympic and Paralympic Museum- Another excellent cold weather activity, this unique museum looks at the storied history of the Olympics and Paralympics.

Spring (March through May)

  • Biking and Hiking- Just as in summer, spring is a great time to enjoy the many trails around Colorado Springs.
  • Visiting Manitou Springs- This charming town is unique for the Manitou Cliff Dwellings found here, and the awe-inspiring mineral springs.
  • Riding the Pikes Peak Cog Railway- Ride the highest cog railway in the world to the summit of Pikes Peak and astounding Rocky Mountain views? Yes, please!
  • Experiencing the Garden of the Gods- You’ve no doubt heard of the astounding red rock formations found in Colorado Springs. In summer, the wildflowers against this backdrop are a truly stunning sight!

Downtown Colorado Springs is Vibrant and Attractive All Year

No matter what time of year you visit, Downtown Colorado Springs shouldn’t be missed! With quaint shops and excellent restaurants, you can spend hours window shopping, sipping wine, and enjoying the city’s unique vibe. Some people like it so much they stay the entire weekend!

Rent a Car to See for Your Trip to Colorado Springs

There’s an awful lot to do in and around Colorado Springs. While the city does have decent public transportation, we recommend renting a car instead. That way, you can explore the entire area at your own pace. For example, if you’re enjoying yourself at an attraction, resort, or restaurant, you can stay longer.

One caveat is if you decide to stay at your resort the entire weekend. If so, Renting a car probably won’t be necessary. Most hotels have everything you need to enjoy your stay without having to leave the premises.

Use a Rideshare Company

If you don’t want the hassle of renting a car, rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft are a great choice. Most of the popular sites around Colorado Springs are within a 10 to 15 mile radius of the city’s center. That makes it relatively affordable to use a rideshare service. Plus, even if you go in winter and don’t know how to drive in snow, your rideshare driver will.

Don’t Go Too Hard on Saturday

Here’s the thing about Colorado Springs; it sits over 6000 feet above sea level! For some people, that means altitude sickness is a real issue. To prevent it, we suggest taking it easy on Saturday while your body gets used to the altitude. Then, once Sunday arrives, and your body is used to it, you can go all out.

Here are a few other simple tips for preventing altitude sickness while enjoying your weekend in Colorado Springs.

  • Stay hydrated. We recommend drinking as much water as possible during your stay.
  • Try to keep alcohol consumption to a minimum. Alcohol dries out your body and can make altitude sickness feel even worse.
  • Don’t drink too much coffee. Coffee, like alcohol, dries out your body and can increase altitude sickness symptoms.
  • Look for symptoms of altitude sickness including headaches, nausea, fatigue and dizziness. If you start to feel them, rest immediately and drink water or a sports drink like Gatorade.
  • Try to avoid respiratory depressants. Some medications, including sleeping pills, depress (reduce) your breathing. This can impede your acclimatization to Colorado Springs and make it more difficult to enjoy yourself. Unless they’re prescribed by a healthcare provider, leave them at home.

Consider Centrally-Located Accommodations

There are quite a few charming bed-and-breakfasts in Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs. By staying at one, you set yourself up to be close to many attractions. That can make it easier to decide what activities to enjoy and, more importantly, get started enjoying them quickly.

Check Availability and Hours Before Leaving Home

As we’ve talked about, some activities are only available during specific times of year. Two of the best examples are snowboarding and skiing, which are only available in winter.

With that in mind, it’s always best to check availability and hours before leaving home. That way, if an activity, event, or attraction isn’t available, you won’t be disappointed when you arrive.

Self Storage in Colorado Springs

No matter what time of year you decide to visit, Colorado Springs is fun, inviting, and invigorating! There’s always something to do and see, places to explore, and exciting new experiences to enjoy!

If you’ve come to Colorado Springs and decided to stay, SecurCare Self Storage can help you settle in. Our safe, secure storage units in Colorado Springs, CO, are the perfect solution. You can store your household goods as well as jet skis, winter sports gear, and much more!

Reserving a storage unit in Colorado Springs is easy, also. Simply reserve it online and, once you’re finished, your storage unit in Colorado Springs will be ready when you arrive.

Until then, we hope that your weekend in Colorado Springs is memorable and fun! It’s a great place to visit, no doubt, but an even better place to call home!

They line the walls of basement bars and pubs, but do you ever wonder how to tell if a beer stein is valuable? We’re not talking about the ones adorned with your college football team logo—though they are a valuable reminder of your university days.

We’re talking about the big, lid-wearing beer steins seen at Oktoberfest celebrations.

“Stein” is a German word literally meaning stone but comes from the phrase, “Stein Krug” (stone mug). Steins come in a variety of materials, including ceramic, glass, wood, metal and crystal. And much like storage units, beer steins range in size—from 1 oz to over 8 gallons.

Nearly every stein seller markets their mugs as “vintage” or “authentic.” So how can you tell if your precious pint is worth more than pennies? Whether you’re a stein-collecting connoisseur or you picked up a pint at a thrift shop, here’s are some questions to ask yourself to tell if a beer stein is valuable.

Is it a German Beer Stein?

If it’s made in Germany, odds are your stein is special. Investigate the bottom of the glass. Look for “Made in Germany” or “Gemacht in Deutschland.” Obviously if it has a “Made in” mark but the country isn’t Germany, you don’t have an authentic German beer stein.

Is the Lid Lighter on the Inside?

Lids are one of the most important features when determining a beer stein’s value. Because it’s a soft metal, air exposure causes pewter to darken over time. If it’s dipped in a darkening agent and made to look old, the entire lid will be dark. However, if upon opening your stein, the inside of the lid is lighter than the outside, you may have a stein of significant value. Another lid lesson: Pewter, cone-shaped lids are typically the least valuable.

Is There a Bump on the Handle?

It wasn’t until the 1920s that manufacturers began adding bumps to beer stein handles. If your handle has bumps or grooves for your fingers, it was made recently, meaning it’s probably not worth much.

Is it Hand-Painted with an Interesting Design?

Examine your mug closely. Many reproduced steins appear to be hand-painted when they’re actually not. Look for imperfections, as well as a raised look on the design.

Certain illustrations are especially valuable, including scenes featuring:

  • Biblical figures
  • Battles
  • Historical milestones

What is the Beer Stein Made Out Of?

Though some reproduced steins feature these materials too, the most valuable vintage ones are made of silver, ivory or glass.

Beer steins have changed over time, but those variations are subtle. Look closely when examining yours. And consult a professional appraiser to see if your stein is valuable. Whether real or replica, fill your mug and cheers yourself to your new knowledge of beer steins!

After you’ve found out your beer stein is valuable, what next? For starters, you can store it in a temperature-controlled storage unit with SecurCare Self Storage. By offering a variety of self-storage units in several sizes, we also offer some of the most requested features like fenced perimeters and security cameras. We continually strive to satisfy all of our tenants’ storage needs. Chat with us today and store your valuables tomorrow.

Coin collecting conjures up images of people scouring the ground with metal detectors hoping to find a piece of monetary history. In reality, a lot of coin collecting takes place in homes and self-storage units when people realize that they’ve been holding on to something that has surprising value. If you’re interested in the art of coin collecting or want to know if your old coins are worth something, here are our top tips for identifying valuable coins.

Get Down To The Metal

One of the simplest ways to identify valuable coins is to look at what metal it contains. Though the common eye might not differentiate between a quarter made in 1963 and one made in 1967, there is a big difference for collectors. Quarters made before 1965 contained 90 percent pure silver. The government changed the coins to cheaper metals to save money on manufacturing, but the old silver quarters can still represent a great find for you. Because the price of silver has increased greatly since the 60s, silver quarters are now worth close to four dollars each. While that might not be a huge number on its own, it can add up quickly. While newer coins are often made of inexpensive alloy metals that don’t accumulate value, older pieces often accumulate worth based on their components alone!

Age Isn’t Everything

It’s easy to get swept up in looking for the oldest coins you can find, but that might not yield the biggest rewards. While it is possible to find extremely old coins that held their value, some old coins are relatively commonplace. Decent copies of some ancient Roman coins can be had for around $20, and those are hundreds of years old. Age doesn’t guarantee rarity, and an old coin might not be in high demand. These are some of the most important elements to value.

Go Through Rolls of Coins From Your Local Bank

This method may take the most time, but the chance of finding a rare coin is relatively high. The fact is, banks don’t do this. They roll the coins or take them in already rolled from customers without looking at the coins first. That means they’re a treasure chest for rare and valuable coins! Even better, there’s no cost to you except the face value of any coins you keep! You can return the rest for cash (or more coins) or use them to make any other purchases.

Practice Identifying Valuable Coins

The best way to quickly identify rare and valuable coins is through practice. The good news is there are many online portals where you can learn about rare coins for free. One of the best is this one from Fun Times Guide, which has several articles on evaluating valuable coins. The more you read, research and brush up on the subject, the more of a coin expert you’ll become.

Look for Double Die Coins

If you’ve ever seen a double-printed page in a book, you know what a double die coin looks like. It’s a coin that’s been struck twice, creating the appearance of two images on a coin instead of one. When this happens, the coin almost instantly goes up in value. However, the more distinct and noticeable the error, the more the coin’s value increases. This interesting offshoot of coin collecting started in 1955 with the Lincoln penny. Today, that same penny is the example all use when discussing double die coins.

This is another great example of a double die coin, just so you know what to look for.

Mintage Means Money

One quick way to determine if a coin is rare or valuable is to look at the mintage. That’s the number of copies of the coin that the US mint produced (aka issued). The lower the original number of copies printed, the more valuable a coin will likely become.

Where to Get Rare Coins Appraised

Identifying valuable coins on your own is a great place to start. But you may also want to see an appraiser for a professional opinion. Of course, there are coin dealers and appraisers all across the United States. However, before you see an appraiser, you should do your research. One of the most important factors for appraisers is that they are members of the ANA, the American Numismatic Association. In fact, if they aren’t an ANA member, you should steer clear of them altogether. (The FTC has seen hundreds of complaints over the last 30 years or so. Almost all were against appraisers who weren’t ANA members.)

Another requirement we recommend highly is that you use a dealer or appraiser authorized by the PCGS. That’s the acronym for the Professional Coin Grading Service. The PCGS was established by the industry to standardize the coin appraisal process. Finding a dealer who’s PCGS authorized will give you more peace of mind when you have your coins appraised.

The Most Valuable Coins and Their Prices

The chance that you’ll find a truly rare and very valuable coin is pretty low. There simply aren’t that many floating around in circulation. But it is possible, and if you do find a rare and valuable coin, you’ll want to be able to identify it! Below is a list of some of the most valuable coins today:

  • 1794 Flowing Hair Dollar- $10 million
  • Canada Gold Maple Leaf Coin- $4 million+
  • 1913 Liberty Head Nickel- $3 million
  • 1927 D St Gaudens Double Eagle- $2 million
  • 1870 S Seated Liberty Dollar- $1.3 million
  • 1838 O Capped Bust Half Dollar- $500,000.00

Protect Your Valuable Coins With SecurCare Self Storage

For coin collectors, rarity is generally a function of a coin’s condition. Even if there are many copies of a coin in total, a particularly pristine example will fetch a high price because coins are often beat up as a part of their use in commerce. Coins don’t take up much space individually, but it’s easy to accumulate a big collection quickly. Whether you’re building a collection of U. S. Silver Dollars or collecting anything else, SecurCare Self Storage has the space you need to keep your belongings safe. Rent a storage unit with us today to keep your items secure and your peace of mind intact. We hope this information has helped you so you can begin identifying valuable coins!

Whether you inherited it from family, found it at an estate sale, or are an avid collector, your antique sewing machine could be worth more than you think. Here are some starter tips to help determine your antique sewing machine’s value.

Age of the Antique Sewing Machine

The age of the sewing machine is the first indicator of value. The first working sewing machine was invented in the 1840s. Because of their historical importance, sewing machines from the mid to late 1800s are rare and almost always valuable.

Vintage sewing machines from the 1940s and 50s are also a hit since they’re often found in bright, retro colors. Sewing machines from the 1900s are not considered antique—although they make for fun interior décor.

Here’s the thing: most 20th-Century machines were made in the millions, and since they’re constructed out of metals, many survive the test of time. Unfortunately, this will bring down retail value. Some machine brands are rare, but the machine model itself is likely to be common under a number of names.

Determine the Machine’s Brand

Determining the brand wil help you know the value of your sewing machine – and if it’s infact, an antique sewing machine. Here is a quick breakdown of the most popular machines of the 20th century and before!

  • Singer brand machines are among the most popular, but they are also the most expensive machines. Singer sewing machines tend to come a little cheaper nowadays since they were in such mass production in the 20th-century.
  • Willcox & Gibbs is a company that made machines starting in the founded in the 19th century for both industrial and domestic use! Since these are pre-20th century, they also retain a lot of value.
  • Wheeler & Wilson machines became famous for their ability to hem. One of their most sought after machines was capable of making 100 buttonholes per hour all the way back in 1860!
  • White is one of the most selling sewing machines in the United States, right behind Singer! They are usually less valuable due to their mass production.

Condition of the Antique Sewing Machine

The condition of your antique sewing machine is important to collectors. Rusting, chipping and obvious broken parts will decrease the machine’s value.

After you’ve considered the age and condition of your sewing machine use eBay to research further. Online antique dealers can be another valuable resource. If you’ve looked online and haven’t found similar sewing machines, take your machine to an antique appraiser.

Knowing what determines your sewing machine value will help you avoid offers and appraisals that are too low or too good to be true.

Keep Your Sewing Machine Mint!

After you’ve found out more about your sewing machine, make sure you keep it in mint condition to preserve its value. For starters, you can store it in a climate controlled storage unit with SecurCare Self Storage. Climate controlled storage can protect your items from heat and humidity, which cause rust. We offer self-storage units in several sizes to meet all of your storage needs. Our facilities also have features like fenced perimeters and security cameras to keep your belongings safe and secure. Owning a classic or vintage car can be a highly rewarding experience filled with pride, thrills, and camaraderie. However, it also comes with certain responsibilities. One of those is proper storage, especially if you live in Reno, Nevada.

Reno, for the uninitiated, is known for its extreme temperatures and incredibly dry climate. These factors make proper classic car storage important for maintaining its beauty and performance.

In this fact-filled article, we’ll explore the best practices for classic car storage in Reno, NV. We’ll also look at how to select the best storage option for your classic car. It’s all brought to you by the storage specialists at SecurCare. Read on for tips and advice and discover how to store your classic car like a pro!

The Importance of Climate Control for Classic Cars

Classic cars typically have delicate finishes as well as parts and materials that are no longer being manufactured. It’s for these reasons that they require special care and consideration when being stored. If you overlook them, you might find that your vintage car’s parts wear out prematurely, leading to expensive replacement.

One of the most important factors to consider when storing a classic vehicle in Reno is climate control. Reno’s desert climate can lead to extreme temperature swings, which can negatively impact your car’s interior and exterior. To prevent this, climate-controlled storage units are your best option.

Why Choose Climate-Controlled Storage Units?

  • Preventing Rust and Corrosion: Humidity and temperature changes can lead to moisture build-up in and on your classic car. This can result in corrosion on metal parts, which is a nightmare for any vintage car enthusiast.
  • Protecting your Car’s Interior: Extreme heat can cause the dashboard and seats of vintage cars to crack or fade. Climate-controlled storage helps maintain a steady temperature, protecting leather and other materials.
  • Preserving Mechanical Components: Extreme fluctuations in temperature can affect fluids, rubber seals, and belts. This can lead to both damage and long-term mechanical issues.

Do climate-controlled storage units cost more? Often yes, but the small extra cost is offset by the large extra layer of protection they deliver. That makes renting a climate-controlled storage unit in Reno a no-brainer for anyone serious about maintaining their vintage vehicle.

Why You Should Opt for Dedicated Vehicle Storage

Leaving your classic car parked outside or in an unprotected area can lead to exposure to harsh weather, dust, and even potential vandalism. Opting for a dedicated vehicle storage unit provides protection and peace of mind.

Some other benefits of a dedicated storage space are:

  • Stronger Security: Storage facilities like SecurCare offer gated access and 24/7 surveillance. They also have staff on-site, ensuring your car is safe from theft or vandalism.
  • Protection from the Elements: Dust, dirt, and falling debris can cause unnecessary wear and tear on your vehicle’s exterior. By storing it in a vehicle storage unit, you ensure it stays well-protected at all times.
  • Saving Space at Home: Many homes don’t have a garage, shed, or other storage area big enough for a classic car. A storage unit offers a convenient, affordable, and secure alternative. It also frees up space for everyday vehicles if you do have a garage.

For those seeking classic car storage near Reno, there are plenty of options. SecurCare is one of the best, with first-class storage amenities and features. Whoever you choose, be sure to look for storage facilities that specialize in vintage car storage.

Choosing the Right Classic Car Storage Facility in Reno, Nevada

Choosing the right storage facility for your classic car in Reno requires some research. Here are a few key factors to consider:

  • Location: Look for a storage facility that’s easily accessible. This will make it convenient for routine car maintenance and quick inspections.
  • Storage Unit Size: Make sure the unit you choose is large enough for your vehicle. You need to be able to drive it in and exit your vehicle without risk of damaging anything. Also, it should be big enough for any additional equipment or supplies you may need to store.
  • Security Features: Choose a facility with robust security features such as 24/7 video monitoring, on-site staff, and gated access.
  • Climate Controlled Units: As mentioned earlier, climate-controlled storage units are best for keeping your classic car in peak condition.

Parking Storage vs. Indoor Storage

Most storage facilities offer open parking storage for vehicles. Think of these like a regular parking space in a store’s parking lot. This type of storage is usually a little cheaper than indoor storage. However, it doesn’t provide nearly the same level of protection.

Your classic ride will be inside a gated facility with video security and other security measures. However, it will be exposed to Reno’s harsh climate, falling debris, and bird droppings that can damage its paint. For these reasons, we recommend against outdoor parking storage for classic cars.

Of course, it’s important to search for the features you need at a price that fits your budget. For those who value their vintage vehicles, however, spending a little extra on an indoor unit makes good sense.

Preparing Your Classic Car for Storage

vintage car under a tarp

Before placing your vintage car in storage, we recommend taking the steps below. They will ensure it stays in tip-top shape while stored. Here’s a quick checklist to follow:

  • Deep Cleaning: Clean your classic car thoroughly inside and out. Remove dirt, dust, and debris to prevent corrosion and staining. This step is vital if you plan to store it long-term.
  • Fill the Gas Tank: When you fill the gas tank before storing your car, it helps stop water from forming inside the tank. If there’s a lot of empty space, moisture can build up when temperatures change. This water can cause rust, which can damage your car’s engine. A full tank leaves less space for air and moisture. This will keep the tank and fuel system safe while the car is stored.
  • Change the Oil: Fresh oil will prevent contaminants from harming the engine during long-term storage.
  • Disconnect the Battery: This avoids battery drain and prevents potential damage. Even better, take the battery home and put it on a trickle charger. That way, it will be fully-charged and ready to go when you need it.
  • Cover your Car: Even in an indoor storage unit, using a car cover will add an extra layer of protection against debris.

Final Thoughts about How To Properly Store Your Classic Car in Reno, Nevada

Storing your classic car properly is an essential part of preserving its condition, and its long-term value. Reno, Nevada’s desert climate, as we’ve seen, presents several car storage challenges. With SecurCare, however, we can help you ensure your vintage car stays in pristine condition year-round.

For more information about storing a classic car, RV, boat, or the contents of your home, contact SecurCare today.
