We\u2019re not talking about the ones adorned with your college football team logo\u2014though they are a valuable reminder of your university days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019re talking about the big, lid-wearing beer steins seen at Oktoberfest celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStein\u201d is a German word literally meaning stone but comes from the phrase, \u201cStein Krug\u201d (stone mug). Steins come in a variety of materials, including ceramic, glass, wood, metal and crystal. And much like storage units, beer steins range in size\u2014from 1 oz to over 8 gallons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearly every stein seller markets their mugs as \u201cvintage\u201d or \u201cauthentic.\u201d So how can you tell if your precious pint is worth more than pennies? Whether you\u2019re a stein-collecting connoisseur or you picked up a pint at a thrift shop, here\u2019s are some questions to ask yourself to tell if a beer stein is valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"is-it-a-german-beer-stein\">Is it a German Beer Stein?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If it\u2019s made in Germany, odds are your stein is special. Investigate the bottom of the glass. Look for \u201cMade in Germany\u201d or \u201cGemacht in Deutschland.\u201d Obviously if it has a \u201cMade in\u201d mark but the country isn\u2019t Germany, you don\u2019t have an authentic German beer stein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"is-the-lid-lighter-on-the-inside\">Is the Lid Lighter on the Inside?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lids are one of the most important features when determining a beer stein\u2019s value. Because it\u2019s a soft metal, air exposure causes pewter to darken over time. If it\u2019s dipped in a darkening agent and made to look old, the entire lid will be dark. However, if upon opening your stein, the inside of the lid is lighter than the outside, you may have a stein of significant value. Another lid lesson: Pewter, cone-shaped lids are typically the least valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"is-there-a-bump-on-the-handle\">Is There a Bump on the Handle?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It wasn\u2019t until the 1920s\u00a0that manufacturers began <a href=\"https:\/\/www.germansteins.com\/about-german-beer-steins\/\">adding bumps to beer stein handles.<\/a> If your handle has bumps or grooves for your fingers, it was made recently, meaning it\u2019s probably not worth much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"is-it-hand-painted-with-an-interesting-design\">Is it Hand-Painted with an Interesting Design?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Examine your mug closely. Many reproduced steins appear to be hand-painted when they\u2019re actually not. Look for imperfections, as well as a raised look on the design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certain illustrations are especially valuable, including scenes featuring:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Biblical figures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Battles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Historical milestones<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-is-the-beer-stein-made-out-of\">What is the Beer Stein Made Out Of?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though some reproduced steins feature these materials too, the most valuable vintage ones are made of silver, ivory or glass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beer steins have changed over time, but those variations are subtle. Look closely when examining yours. And consult a professional appraiser to see if your stein is valuable.
